Berean Standard Bible
And
straightway
in the morning the chief priests held
a
consultation
with
the
elders and
scribes and the whole council,
and
bound Jesus, and
carried
him away, and delivered
him to Pilate.
Early
in the morning ,
the chief priests ,
elders ,
scribes ,
and the whole Sanhedrin
devised
a
plan.
They
bound Jesus, led
Him away, and handed
Him over
to Pilate.
And
Pilate asked
him, Art
thou
the King of the Jews? And
he
answering
said unto
them
, Thou
sayest
it
.
So
Pilate questioned
Him, “Are
You
the King of the Jews? ”
“You
have
said so
, ”
Jesus
replied
.
And the chief priests accused
him of many things :
but
he
answered
nothing
.
And the chief priests began
to
accuse
Him of many things.
And
Pilate asked
him again, saying,
Answerest
thou
nothing
? behold
how many things
they witness
against thee.
Then
Pilate questioned
Him again, “Have
You
no
answer
? Look
how many charges
they are
bringing
against You!”
But Jesus yet
answered
nothing;
so
that
Pilate
marvelled
.
But to
Pilate’s
amazement,
Jesus made
no
further
reply
.
Now at that
feast he
released
unto
them
one
prisoner ,
whomsoever
they
desired
.
Now it
was
Pilate’s
custom
at the
feast to
release
to
the
people
a
prisoner of
their
choosing
.
And there
was
one
named Barabbas ,
which
lay
bound
with
them
that
had
made
insurrection
with him,
who had committed murder in
the insurrection.
And a
man
named Barabbas was
imprisoned
with the
rebels
who had committed murder during
the insurrection.
And
the multitude
crying
aloud
began to
desire
him
to do
as
he
had
ever
done
unto
them
.
So
the crowd
went
up
and
began asking
Pilate
to keep
his
custom
.
But
Pilate
answered
them,
saying,
Will
ye
that
I
release unto
you the King of the Jews?
“Do
you
want
me
to
release to
you the King of the Jews? ”
Pilate
asked.
For he knew that the chief priests had delivered
him
for
envy
.
For he knew it
was
out
of
envy
that the chief priests had handed
Jesus
over
.
But the chief priests moved
the people,
that
he
should
rather
release Barabbas unto
them.
But the chief priests stirred
up
the crowd
to
have
him
release Barabbas to
them instead
.
And
Pilate answered
and
said
again
unto
them, What will
ye
then that
I
shall
do unto
him
whom
ye
call the King of the Jews?
So
Pilate asked
them again
, “
What then do you
want
me
to
do
with
the
One
you
call the King of the Jews? ”
And they cried
out
again
, Crucify him .
And they shouted
back
, “
Crucify Him !”
Then
Pilate
said
unto
them,
Why ,
what evil hath
he done? And
they cried
out
the more
exceedingly
, Crucify him .
“
Why ?”
asked
Pilate.
“
What evil has
He done? ”
But
they shouted
all
the louder
, “
Crucify Him !”
And so
Pilate,
willing
to content
the people
, released Barabbas unto
them ,
and
delivered
Jesus,
when
he had scourged
him
, to be crucified.
And wishing
to satisfy
the crowd
, Pilate
released Barabbas to
them .
But
he had Jesus
flogged
, and
handed
Him
over
to be crucified.
And
the soldiers led him
away into the hall
, called
Praetorium ;
and they
call
together
the whole band
.
Then
the soldiers led Jesus
away into the palace
(that
is
, the
Praetorium )
and called
the whole company
together
.
And
they clothed
him with
purple, and
platted
a crown of thorns, and put
it about
his head ,
They dressed
Him in
a
purple robe
, twisted
together
a crown of thorns, and set
it on
His head .
And began to salute him ,
Hail, King of the Jews!
And they
began to salute Him :
“
Hail, King of the Jews! ”
And
they smote
him
on
the
head with a reed,
and did
spit
upon
him ,
and bowing
their
knees
worshipped
him.
They kept
striking
His
head with a staff
and spitting
on
Him .
And they
knelt
down
and
bowed
before
Him.
And
when
they had mocked him, they took
off
the purple from
him,
and put his own clothes on him ,
and
led him out to crucify him.
After
they had mocked Him, they removed
the purple robe
and put His own clothes back
on Him .
Then
they
led Him out to crucify Him.
And
they
compel
one
Simon a
Cyrenian,
who
passed
by,
coming
out
of the
country
, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to
bear
his cross.
Now
Simon of Cyrene
, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was
passing
by
on
his way
in
from
the
country,
and
the
soldiers
forced
him
to
carry
the
cross of
Jesus
.
And
they bring
him
unto
the
place Golgotha, which is,
being
interpreted,
The place of a
skull.
They brought
Jesus
to
a
place called
Golgotha, which means
The Place of the
Skull.
And
they gave
him to
drink
wine mingled
with myrrh :
but he received
it
not.
There
they offered
Him wine mixed
with myrrh ,
but He did
not take
it
.
And when
they had
crucified him ,
they parted
his garments ,
casting lots upon
them,
what every
man
should
take.
And they crucified Him .
They also
divided
His garments by
casting lots to
decide
what each
of
them
would
take.
And
it was the third hour ,
and
they crucified him.
It was the third hour when
they crucified Him.
And the superscription
of
his
accusation
was
written
over,
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
And the charge
inscribed
against
Him
read:
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
And
with him
they crucify
two thieves;
the
one on his right hand,
and the
other
on his left.
Along
with Jesus,
they crucified
two robbers,
one on His right and one
on His left.
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

And they
that
passed by railed
on him, wagging
their heads ,
and saying, Ah,
thou
that
destroyest
the temple ,
and buildest
it in three days,
And those
who
passed by heaped
abuse
on Him, shaking
their heads and saying, “Aha!
You
who
are
going
to
destroy
the temple and rebuild
it in three days,
Save
thyself,
and
come down from the cross .
come down from the cross and
save
Yourself!”
Likewise
also
the chief priests mocking
said
among themselves with
the
scribes
, He saved others ;
himself
he cannot save .
In
the same
way,
the
chief priests and
scribes
mocked
Him
among themselves, saying,
“
He saved others ,
but
He cannot save Himself!
Let Christ the King of Israel descend
now from the cross, that we may see and believe .
And they
that
were crucified with him reviled
him.
Let the
Christ ,
the King of Israel ,
come
down
now from the cross, so
that we may see and believe !”
And even
those
who
were crucified with Him berated
Him.
And
when
the sixth hour was
come,
there
was
darkness
over
the
whole
land
until the ninth hour.
From
the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness
came
over
all
the
land
.
And
at the ninth hour Jesus cried with
a loud voice, saying,
Eloi, Eloi, lama
sabachthani? which is,
being
interpreted
, My God, my God, why hast
thou
forsaken me?
At the ninth hour ,
Jesus cried out
in
a loud voice, “
Eloi, Eloi, lema
sabachthani? ”
which means
, “
My God, My God, why have
You
forsaken Me? ”
And
some of them
that
stood
by,
when
they
heard it
, said, Behold, he calleth
Elias
.
When
some of those
standing
nearby
heard this
, they
said, “
Behold, He is
calling
Elijah
. ”
And one
ran and filled a spunge
full
of
vinegar,
and
put it on a reed ,
and gave
him
to drink, saying, Let
alone ;
let us see whether
Elias
will
come
to take him down.
And someone
ran and filled a sponge
with
sour
wine.
He
put it on a reed and held
it
up
for
Jesus
to drink, saying, “Leave
Him
alone .
Let us see if
Elijah
comes
to take Him down. ”
And
Jesus cried
with
a loud voice,
and gave
up
the
ghost
.
But
Jesus let
out
a loud cry
and breathed
His
last
.
And the veil of the temple was rent
in twain
from the
top to the
bottom.
And the veil of the temple was torn
in two
from top to bottom.
And
when the centurion ,
which
stood
over
against
him,
saw that
he so
cried
out,
and
gave
up
the
ghost
, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God .
When the centurion standing
there
in
front
of
Jesus
saw how
He had
breathed
His
last
, he said, “
Truly this man was the Son of God !”
There were also women looking
on
afar
off:
among whom
was
Mary Magdalene, and
Mary the mother of James the less
and of Joses, and Salome ;
And
there were also women watching
from
a
distance.
Among them
were
Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger
and of Joses, and Salome .
(Who
also,
when
he was in Galilee, followed
him,
and ministered
unto
him;)
and
many other women which
came
up with him unto
Jerusalem
.
These
women
had
followed
Jesus
and
ministered
to
Him
while
He was in Galilee, and there
were
many other women who
had
come
up to
Jerusalem
with Him.
And
now when
the
even
was come,
because
it was the
preparation ,
that is, the day before the sabbath,
Now it
was already
evening.
Since
it was Preparation Day
(
that is, the day before the Sabbath )
,
Joseph of Arimathaea,
an
honourable
counsellor
, which
also
waited
for the kingdom of God, came,
and
went
in
boldly unto
Pilate ,
and
craved
the body of Jesus.
Joseph of Arimathea
, a
prominent
Council
member
who
himself
was
waiting
for the kingdom of God, boldly went
to
Pilate to
ask
for
the body of Jesus.
And
Pilate marvelled
if
he
were
already dead :
and
calling
unto
him
the
centurion
, he
asked
him
whether
he had
been
any
while
dead
.
Pilate was
surprised
to
hear
that
Jesus
was
already dead, so
he summoned
the
centurion
to
ask
if
this
was
so
.
And
when he
knew
it of
the centurion, he gave
the body to Joseph.
When Pilate
had
confirmed
it with
the centurion, he granted
the body to Joseph.
And
he
bought fine
linen, and
took him
down, and
wrapped him
in the linen
, and laid
him
in a sepulchre
which
was
hewn
out of a
rock ,
and
rolled a stone unto
the door
of
the sepulchre
.
So
Joseph
bought a
linen cloth
, took down the
body
of
Jesus
, wrapped it
in the cloth
, and placed
it
in a tomb
that
had
been
cut
out of the
rock .
Then
he
rolled a stone against
the entrance
to
the tomb
.
And
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses
beheld
where he
was laid
.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph
saw
where His
body
was placed
.
