Five days later
the high
priest Ananias came
down
with some
elders and a lawyer
named
Tertullus, who
presented
to the governor their
case
against Paul .
And
after
five days came
down
the chief
priest Ananias ,
with the
elders ,
and a certain
orator
--
Tertullus, and
they
made
manifest
to the governor `the
things'
against Paul ;
When
Paul
had
been called in
, Tertullus opened
the
prosecution:
“Because
of
you
, we
have
enjoyed
a
lasting
peace, and your
foresight
has
brought
improvements
to this nation .
and
he
having
been called, Tertullus began
to
accuse
`him'
, saying,
`Much
peace enjoying
through
thee
, and worthy
deeds
being
done
to this nation through
thy
forethought,
In
every
way
and everywhere, most excellent
Felix, we
acknowledge
this
with all gratitude.
always,
also,
and everywhere we
receive
it
, most noble
Felix, with all thankfulness;
But
in
order
not to
burden
you
any
further, I beg
your
indulgence
to hear us briefly.
and
that
I
may
not be
further tedious
to
thee
, I pray
thee
to hear us concisely
in
thy
gentleness;
We
have
found this man to
be
a pestilence, stirring
up
dissension among
the Jews all
over
the world .
He
is
a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes ,
for
having
found this man a pestilence, and
moving
a
dissension to
all
the Jews through
the world --
a ringleader also
of the sect of the Nazarenes --
and
he
even
tried
to
desecrate
the temple ;
so
we seized
him.
who
also
the temple did
try
to
profane,
whom
also
we took,
and
according
to
our
law
did
wish
to
judge,

and Lysias the chief captain having come near, with much violence, out of our hands did take away,
By
examining
him
yourself
, you
will
be able to learn
the
truth
about
all our
charges
against
him .”
having
commanded
his
accusers
to
come
to
thee
, from
whom
thou
mayest
be able ,
thyself
having
examined,
to know
concerning
all these
things
of
which
we
accuse
him ;'
The Jews concurred
, asserting
that
these charges
were
true
.
and
the Jews also
agreed
, professing
these things
to
be
so
.
When
the governor motioned
for
Paul
to speak ,
he
began
his
response:
“
Knowing that you
have
been a judge over
this nation for
many
years
, I gladly
make
my
defense.
And
Paul
answered
--
the governor having
beckoned
to him
to
speak --
`
Knowing `
that '
for
many
years
thou
hast
been a judge to
this nation, the
more
cheerfully
the
things
concerning
myself
I do
answer;
You
can
verify
for
yourself
that no
more than twelve days ago
I went up to Jerusalem
to
worship .
thou
being
able
to
know
that it
is
not
more than twelve days to
me
since
I went up to worship in
Jerusalem,
Yet
my
accusers
did not
find me debating
with anyone
in
the
temple
or riling
up
a crowd
in the synagogues or
in the city .
and
neither
in
the
temple
did they
find me reasoning
with any
one,
or making
a dissension
of
the
multitude,
nor
in the synagogues ,
nor
in the city ;
Nor can
they prove
to you
any
of
their
charges
against me.
nor are
they able
to prove
against me the
things
concerning
which
they
now
accuse
me
.
I do
confess to you,
however
, that I
worship
the
God
of
our
fathers
according to the Way ,
which
they call a sect .
I believe
everything
that is
laid
down
by
the Law and written
in
the Prophets,
`And
I confess this
to thee
, that ,
according to the way that
they call a sect ,
so
serve
I the
God
of
the
fathers,
believing
all
things
that in
the law and the prophets have
been
written
,
and
I
have
the
same
hope in
God that
they themselves cherish
, that there will
be a resurrection
of both
the righteous and the
wicked.

hope toward
God ,
which
they themselves also
wait
for
, `
that '
there is
about
to
be a rising
again
of the dead,
both
of
righteous and unrighteous;
In this hope,
I strive
always
to maintain
a clear
conscience before
God and man
.
and
in this I do
exercise
myself,
to have
a conscience void
of
offence
toward
God and men
always
.
After several
years ,
then,
I returned
to
Jerusalem
to bring
alms
to my people
and to
present
offerings .
`And
after many
years I came,
about
to do
kind
acts
to my nation,
and offerings ,
At
the
time
they
found
me in the temple, I
was
ceremonially
clean
and
was
not inciting
a
crowd
or
an
uproar.
But
there
are
some
Jews
from
the
province
of
Asia
in
which
certain
Jews
from
Asia
did
find
me purified
in the temple, not with
multitude,
nor
with
tumult,
who
ought
to appear
before you
and bring
charges
, if they have
anything against me .
whom
it
behoveth
to be
present
before thee,
and to
accuse
, if they had
anything against me ,
Otherwise,
let these men
state
for
themselves
any
crime
they found in me when
I
stood
before the Sanhedrin
,
or
let these same
say
if
they found any
unrighteousness
in me in
my
standing
before the sanhedrim
,
unless
it
was
this one thing
I
called
out
as
I
stood
in their
presence:
‘It
is
concerning the
resurrection
of the dead that
I am on
trial
before
you today
. ’”
except
concerning
this one voice,
in which
I
cried,
standing
among
them
--
Concerning a
rising
again
of the dead I am judged
to-day
by
you. '
Then
Felix
, who
was
well
informed
about
the Way,
adjourned
the hearing
and
said
, “
When Lysias the commander
comes
, I will decide
your
case.”
And
having
heard
these
things
, Felix
delayed
them
--
having
known
more
exactly
of
the things
concerning
the way
--
saying
, `
When Lysias the chief
captain
may
come
down
, I will know
fully
the
things
concerning
you;'
He
ordered
the centurion to keep Paul under
guard
, but
to allow
him some
freedom
and permit
his friends to minister to his
needs
.
having
given
also
a
direction
to
the centurion to keep Paul, to let
`
him '
also
have
liberty,
and to
forbid
none
of
his own
friends to minister or
to come
near
to
him
.
After several
days, Felix returned
with his wife Drusilla
, who
was
a Jewess .
He sent for Paul and listened
to
him speak
about
faith in
Christ Jesus.
And
after certain
days, Felix having
come
with Drusilla
his wife, being
a Jewess ,
he sent for Paul ,
and heard
him concerning
the
faith toward
Christ ,
As
Paul
expounded
on
righteousness, self-control
, and the coming
judgment, Felix became
frightened
and
said
, “You
may
go
for now.
When
I
find
the time, I will call for you.”
and
he
reasoning
concerning
righteousness, and
temperance
, and the judgment that
is
about
to
be
, Felix, having
become
afraid,
answered,
`
For the present
be
going,
and
having
got
time, I will call for thee;'
At the same time ,
he
was
hoping that Paul
would
offer
him a
bribe.
So
he sent
for Paul
frequently
and
talked
with him .
and
at the same time also
hoping that money
shall
be
given
to
him by
Paul,
that
he may
release
him,
therefore,
also
sending
for him
the
oftener,
he
was
conversing
with him ;
After
two years had
passed
, Felix was
succeeded
by
Porcius Festus .
And
wishing
to do
the Jews a
favor
, Felix
left Paul in
prison
.
and
two years having
been
fulfilled
, Felix received
a
successor,
Porcius Festus ;
Felix
also
willing
to lay
a
favour
on
the Jews, left Paul bound
.
