King James Version
These
are
the words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah:
In the month of
Chislev
, in the twentieth year, while
I was in the citadel
of
Susa
,
The words of Nehemiah the
son of Hachaliah.
And
it
came
to
pass
in the month Chisleu
, in the twentieth year, as
I was in Shushan
the palace
,
Hanani, one of my brothers
, arrived
with
men from
Judah .
So
I questioned
them about
the
remnant
of
the Jews who
had survived
the exile
, and also
about
Jerusalem.
That
Hanani, one of my brethren
, came,
he
and
certain
men of
Judah ;
and
I asked
them concerning
the Jews that
had escaped,
which
were
left
of
the captivity
, and concerning
Jerusalem.
And they told
me, “
The remnant who
survived
the
exile
are there in the province ,
in great trouble
and disgrace.
The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its
gates are burned with fire. ”
And they said
unto
me, The remnant that
are left
of
the
captivity
there in the province are
in great affliction
and reproach:
the wall of Jerusalem also
is broken down, and the
gates thereof
are burned with fire.
When I heard these words, I sat down and wept .
I
mourned for
days, fasting
and praying
before the God of heaven .
And
it
came
to
pass,
when I heard these words, that
I sat down and wept ,
and
mourned certain
days, and fasted,
and
prayed
before the God of heaven ,
Then
I
said :
“
O LORD ,
God of heaven, the great and awesome
God who
keeps
His
covenant of
loving
devotion
with
those
who
love Him and keep
His commandments ,
And
said ,
I
beseech
thee,
O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible
God ,
that
keepeth
covenant and
mercy
for
them
that
love him and observe
his commandments :
let Your
eyes
be open
and
Your
ears
attentive to
hear the prayer that
I,
Your
servant, now
pray before You
day and night for Your
servants, the
Israelites.
I
confess the sins that
we Israelites
have committed
against You.
Both I and my father’s
house have sinned.
Let thine
ear
now
be attentive ,
and
thine
eyes
open,
that
thou
mayest
hear the prayer of
thy
servant, which
I
pray before thee
now,
day and night ,
for the
children
of
Israel
thy
servants, and
confess the sins of
the
children
of
Israel,
which
we have sinned
against thee:
both I and my father's
house have sinned.
We have behaved
corruptly against You
and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and
ordinances
that
You
gave
Your
servant Moses.
We have dealt
very
corruptly against thee,
and have not kept the commandments, nor
the
statutes, nor
the
judgments,
which
thou
commandedst
thy
servant Moses.
Remember, I pray
, the word that You
commanded
Your
servant Moses when
You
said
, ‘
If you
are
unfaithful
, I will scatter you among the nations ,
Remember, I beseech
thee
, the word that thou
commandedst
thy
servant Moses, saying,
If ye
transgress
, I will scatter you abroad
among the nations :
but if you
return
to
Me and keep and
practice
My commandments, then
even
if
your
exiles
have
been
banished
to
the farthest
horizon
, I
will gather them from there
and bring them to
the place I have chosen as
a
dwelling
for
My Name. ’
But if ye
turn
unto
me ,
and keep my commandments, and
do
them;
though
there
were
of
you
cast
out
unto
the uttermost
part
of
the
heaven
, yet
will I
gather them from thence,
and will
bring them unto
the place that
I have chosen to
set
my name there
.
They
are Your
servants and Your
people .
You
redeemed them
by Your
great power and mighty
hand.
Now
these
are thy
servants and thy
people ,
whom
thou
hast
redeemed by thy
great power ,
and by
thy
strong
hand.
O Lord, may
Your
ear be attentive to my
prayer and to the prayers
of Your
servants who delight
to revere
Your
name .
Give
Your
servant
success
this
day
, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. ”
(At
that
time
I was the cupbearer to
the
king
. )
O LORD, I
beseech
thee,
let
now
thine
ear be attentive to the
prayer of
thy
servant,
and to the prayer
of thy
servants ,
who desire
to fear
thy
name :
and
prosper
, I pray thee
, thy
servant
this
day,
and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For
I was the king's
cupbearer.
