YLT
Young's Literal Translation
Then spake
Jesus to the multitude
, and to his disciples,
Then Jesus spake
to the multitudes
, and to his disciples,
Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit
in
Moses'
seat:
saying ,
`On
the seat
of
Moses
sat
down
the
scribes and the Pharisees ;
All therefore
whatsoever
they bid
you observe, that
observe and do ;
but do
not
ye
after
their works :
for they say, and do not .
all ,
then,
as
much
as
they may
say
to
you to
observe, observe and do ,
but according
to
their works do
not,
for they say, and do not ;
For they bind heavy
burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them
on
men's
shoulders ;
but they themselves
will not move them with
one
of
their
fingers
.
for they bind together
burdens heavy
and grievous to be borne, and lay upon
the
shoulders of
men,
but with
their
finger
they will not move them.
But
all their works they do for
to be seen of
men :
they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders
of their garments,
`And
all their works they do to be seen by
men ,
and
they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes
of their garments,
And
love the uppermost
rooms
at
feasts
, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
they
love also
the chief
couches
in
the
supper
, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
And greetings
in the markets
, and to be called of
men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
and the
salutations
in the market-places
, and to be called by
men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
But
be
not
ye called Rabbi :
for one is your Master,
even
Christ ;
and all ye are brethren .
`And
ye --
ye
may
not
be
called Rabbi ,
for one is your director
--
the
Christ ,
and all ye are brethren ;
And call no
man
your father upon
the earth :
for one is your Father, which
is in heaven.
and ye
may
not
call `any'
your father on
the earth ,
for one is your Father, who
is in the
heavens,
Neither
be
ye called masters:
for one is your Master,
even
Christ.
nor
may
ye be
called directors,
for one is your director
--
the
Christ.
But
he
that
is
greatest
among
you shall be your servant.
And
the
greater
of
you shall be your ministrant,
And whosoever
shall exalt himself shall be abased;
and he
that
shall humble himself shall be exalted.
and whoever
shall exalt himself shall be humbled,
and whoever
shall humble himself shall be exalted.
But
woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye shut up the kingdom
of heaven
against
men :
for ye neither
go in yourselves
, neither
suffer
ye them
that
are
entering
to go
in
.
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because
ye shut up the reign
of the
heavens
before
men ,
for ye do
not
go in, nor
those
going
in
do
ye suffer
to enter
.
Woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye devour
widows'
houses, and for a pretence make long prayer:
therefore
ye shall receive the
greater
damnation
.
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because
ye eat
up
the
houses of
the
widows
, and for a pretence make long prayers,
because
of
this
ye shall receive more
abundant
judgment
.
Woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye compass
sea and land to make one proselyte, and when
he
is
made,
ye make him twofold more the
child
of
hell
than yourselves.
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because
ye go
round
the
sea and the
dry
land to make one proselyte, and whenever
it
may
happen
--
ye make him a
son
of
gehenna
twofold more than yourselves.
Woe
unto
you, ye
blind guides, which
say
, Whosoever
shall
swear by the temple
, it is nothing ;
but whosoever
shall
swear by the gold of the temple,
he
is a
debtor!
`Wo
to
you, blind guides, who
are
saying
, Whoever
may
swear by the sanctuary
, it is nothing ,
but whoever
may
swear by the gold of the sanctuary
--
is debtor!
Ye
fools and blind :
for whether
is greater, the gold, or the temple
that sanctifieth
the gold?
Fools and blind !
for which
`
is '
greater, the gold, or the sanctuary
that is
sanctifying
the gold?
And, Whosoever
shall
swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever
sweareth
by the gift that is upon it ,
he
is guilty.
`
And, whoever
may
swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever
may
swear
by the gift that is upon it --
is debtor!
Ye
fools and blind :
for whether
is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth
the gift?
Fools and blind !
for which
`
is '
greater, the gift, or the altar that is
sanctifying
the gift?
Whoso
therefore shall
swear by the altar, sweareth
by it, and by all things thereon.
`He
therefore who
did
swear by the altar, doth
swear
by it, and by all things on
it;
And whoso
shall
swear by the temple
, sweareth
by it, and by him that
dwelleth
therein.
and he
who
did
swear by the sanctuary
, doth
swear
by it, and by Him who
is
dwelling
in
it;
And he that
shall
swear by heaven, sweareth
by the throne of God, and by him that
sitteth
thereon
.
and he who
did
swear by the
heaven, doth
swear
by the throne of God, and by Him who
is
sitting
upon
it
.
Woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye pay
tithe of mint and anise
and cummin
, and have
omitted
the weightier matters
of the law ,
judgment, mercy
, and faith :
these ought
ye
to have
done
, and not to leave
the
other
undone
.
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because
ye give
tithe of the
mint ,
and the
dill,
and the
cumin
, and did
neglect
the weightier things
of the Law --
the
judgment, and
the
kindness
, and the
faith ;
these it
behoved
`you'
to do
, and those
not to neglect
.
Ye
blind guides ,
which
strain
at
a
gnat, and swallow
a
camel.
`
Blind guides !
who
are
straining
out
the
gnat, and the
camel are
swallowing
.
Woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye make clean the outside of the cup and of
the platter
, but
within they are full of extortion
and excess
.
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because
ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate
, and
within they are full of rapine
and incontinence
.
Thou
blind Pharisee ,
cleanse first that
which
is
within
the cup and platter
, that the outside of them may be
clean also
.
`
Blind Pharisee !
cleanse first the inside
of
the
cup and the
plate
, that the outside of them also
may become
clean.
Woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye are like unto
whited
sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward
, but
are
within full of dead
men's
bones, and of all uncleanness .
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because
ye are like to
whitewashed
sepulchres, which outwardly
indeed do
appear beautiful, and
within are
full of bones of
dead
men
, and of all uncleanness ;
Even
so ye
also outwardly appear righteous
unto
men, but
within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity
.
so also ye
outwardly indeed
do
appear to
men righteous
, and
within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness
.
Woe
unto
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs
of the prophets, and garnish
the sepulchres
of the righteous,
`Wo
to
you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres
of the prophets, and adorn
the tombs
of the righteous,
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Wherefore
ye be
witnesses
unto
yourselves, that ye are the
children
of them which
killed
the prophets .
So
that
ye testify
to
yourselves, that ye are sons
of them who
did
murder
the prophets ;
Fill
ye up then
the measure of your fathers.
and
ye --
ye
fill
up the measure of your fathers.
Ye
serpents ,
ye
generation
of vipers ,
how can
ye escape the damnation
of hell
?
`
Serpents !
brood
of vipers !
how may
ye escape from
the judgment
of the
gehenna
?
Wherefore
, behold
, I send unto
you prophets, and wise men, and scribes :
and some
of them ye shall
kill and crucify ;
and some
of them shall
ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute
them
from city to city :
`Because
of
this
, lo
, I send to
you prophets, and wise men, and scribes ,
and of them ye will
kill and crucify ,
and of them ye will
scourge in your synagogues, and will
pursue
from city to city ;
That upon
you may come all the righteous blood shed
upon
the earth ,
from the blood of righteous
Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple
and the altar .
that on
you may come all the righteous blood being
poured
out
on
the earth from the blood of Abel the
righteous,
unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary
and the altar :
Verily I say unto
you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
verily I say to
you, all these things shall come upon this generation.
O
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou
that killest
the prophets, and stonest
them
which
are
sent unto thee, how often would
I have
gathered
thy children together, even
as a hen gathereth
her chickens under her
wings, and ye would
not !
`
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art
killing
the prophets, and stoning
those
sent unto thee, how often did
I will
to
gather
thy children together, as a hen doth
gather
her own
chickens under the
wings, and ye did
not will.
Behold
, your
house
is
left unto
you
desolate .
Lo
, left desolate to
you
is
your
house;
For I say unto
you, Ye shall
not see me henceforth, till ye shall
say, Blessed is he that
cometh
in the name of the Lord.
for I say to
you, ye may
not see me henceforth, till ye may
say, Blessed `
is '
he who
is
coming
in the name of the Lord. '
