At that season
Herod the tetrarch heard the report
concerning
Jesus ,
At that time
Herod the tetrarch heard the reports
about
Jesus
and said unto
his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is
risen from the dead ;
and
therefore
do
these
powers work in him.
and said to
his servants, “
This is John the Baptist; he has
risen from the dead !
That
is
why
miraculous
powers are
at
work in him. ”
For
Herod had laid
hold
on
John ,
and bound him ,
and put him in prison for
the
sake
of Herodias, his brother Philip's
wife .
Now
Herod had arrested
John and bound him and put him in prison on
account
of Herodias, his brother Philip’s
wife ,
For
John said
unto
him, It is not lawful for thee
to have her.
because
John had
been
telling
him, “
It is not lawful for you
to have her. ”
And
when
he
would
have
put
him
to death
, he feared
the multitude
, because they counted
him
as a prophet.
Although
Herod
wanted
to kill
John
, he was
afraid
of
the people
, because they regarded
John
as a prophet.
But
when
Herod's
birthday came
, the daughter of Herodias danced in
the
midst,
and pleased Herod .
On
Herod’s
birthday, however,
the daughter of Herodias danced before
them
and pleased Herod
Whereupon
he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever
she should
ask
.
so
much
that
he promised with an oath to give to
her whatever
she asked
.
And
she,
being
put
forward
by her mother, saith
, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
Prompted
by her mother, she
said
, “
Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist. ”
And
the king was grieved ;
but for
the
sake
of his oaths ,
and of
them
that
sat
at
meat
with
him
, he commanded
it
to
be given;
The king was grieved ,
but because
of his oaths and his
guests
, he ordered
that
her
wish
be granted
and he
sent and
beheaded
John in the prison.
and sent to
have
John beheaded
in the prison.
And
his
head was brought on a platter ,
and given
to the damsel:
and
she
brought
it to her mother.
John’s
head was brought in
on a platter and presented
to the girl,
who
carried
it to her mother.
And
his
disciples came ,
and took up
the
corpse,
and buried him;
and they went and told
Jesus.
Then
John’s
disciples came and took his
body
and buried it.
And they went and informed
Jesus.
Now
when Jesus heard `it'
, he withdrew from
thence
in
a
boat ,
to a desert
place apart:
and
when
the multitudes
heard
`thereof,'
they
followed him on foot from the cities
.
When Jesus heard about
John
, He withdrew by
boat privately
to a solitary
place .
But
the crowds
found
out
about
it
and
followed Him on foot from the towns
.
And
he came
forth,
and saw a great
multitude
, and
he had compassion on them ,
and healed their sick.
When
He stepped
ashore
and saw a large
crowd
, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
And
when even
was
come
, the disciples came to him ,
saying
, The
place
is desert
, and the time
is already past;
send
the multitudes
away,
that
they may
go into
the villages ,
and buy themselves food.
When evening
came
, the disciples came to Him and
said
, “This
is a
desolate
place
, and the hour
is already late.
Dismiss
the crowds
so
they can
go to
the villages and buy themselves some
food. ”
But
Jesus
said
unto
them,
They have
no
need to go away ;
give ye
them to eat.
“
They do
not
need to go away ,”
Jesus
replied.
“You
give them something
to eat. ”
And
they
say
unto
him,
We have here but
five loaves ,
and two fishes
.
“
We have here only
five loaves of
bread
and two fish,”
they
answered
.
And
he
said,
Bring them hither
to me.
“
Bring them here
to Me ,”
Jesus
said
.
And he commanded
the multitudes
to sit down on the grass ;
and
he
took
the five loaves ,
and the two fishes,
and looking up to heaven, he blessed,
and
brake
and
gave
the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes
.
And He directed
the crowds
to sit down on the grass .
Taking
the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, He spoke
a
blessing.
Then
He
broke
the loaves and
gave
them
to the disciples, and the disciples gave
them
to the people
.
And
they all ate ,
and were filled:
and they
took
up that
which
remained
over
of the
broken pieces ,
twelve
baskets
full
.
They all ate and were satisfied,
and the
disciples
picked
up twelve
basketfuls
of broken pieces that
were
left
over
.
And
they
that
did
eat
were
about five thousand men, besides
women and children.
About five thousand men were
fed
, in
addition
to
women and children.
And
straightway
he
constrained
the disciples to
enter
into the boat ,
and to
go before
him unto
the other side, till
he should
send
the multitudes
away
.
Immediately
Jesus
made
the disciples get
into the boat and go on
ahead
of
Him to
the other side, while
He dismissed
the crowds
.
And
after he had sent the
multitudes
away, he went up into
the mountain apart
to pray :
and
when even
was
come
, he was there alone .
After He had sent them
away, He went up on
the mountain by
Himself
to pray .
When evening
came
, He was there alone ,
But the boat was now
in
the
midst
of
the
sea
, distressed
by the waves ;
for
the wind was contrary
.
but the boat was already
far
from
land
, buffeted
by the waves because
the wind was against
it
.
And
in
the fourth watch of the night he
came
unto
them, walking upon
the sea.
During
the fourth watch of the night ,
Jesus
went
out
to
them, walking on
the sea.
And
when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled,
saying,
It
is
a ghost ;
and
they cried out for
fear.
When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified.
“It’s
a ghost !”
they said,
and
cried out in
fear.
But straightway
Jesus spake
unto
them,
saying
Be
of
good
cheer;
it is I ;
be
not afraid.
But Jesus spoke
up
at
once:
“Take
courage!
It is I .
Do
not be
afraid. ”
And
Peter
answered
him
and
said,
Lord, if it be
thou
, bid
me come unto
the
upon
the waters
.
“
Lord, if it is
You
, ”
Peter
replied,
“command
me to
come to
You
on
the water
. ”
And
he
said,
Come. And
Peter went
down from
the boat, and
walked upon
the waters
to
come
to
Jesus.
“
Come ,”
said
Jesus
. Then
Peter got
down out
of
the boat, walked on
the water,
and
came
toward
Jesus.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid ;
and beginning to sink, he
cried out, saying,
Lord, save me .
But when he saw the strength
of
the
wind, he was afraid ,
and beginning to sink, cried out, “
Lord, save me !”
And
immediately Jesus stretched
forth
his hand ,
and took hold of him,
and
saith
unto
him,
O
thou
of little faith, wherefore
didst
thou
doubt?
Immediately Jesus reached
out
His hand and took hold of Peter.
“You
of little faith, ”
He
said,
“why
did
you
doubt? ”
And when they were
gone
up
into the boat, the wind ceased
.
And when they had
climbed
back
into the boat, the wind died
down
.
And
they
that
were in the boat worshipped
him, saying, Of
a
truth
thou
art
the Son of God .
Then
those
who
were in the boat worshiped
Him, saying, “Truly
You
are
the Son of God !”
And
when they had crossed over, they came
to
the
land,
unto
Gennesaret.
When they had crossed over, they landed
at
Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place knew
him
, they sent into
all that
region round
about,
and
brought unto
him
all that
were
sick ,
And when the men of that place recognized
Jesus
, they sent word
to
all the
surrounding
region .
People
brought all the
sick to
Him
and they
besought
him that
they
might
only
touch the border
of his garment:
and as
many
as
touched were made
whole
.
and begged
Him just
to
let
them
touch the fringe
of His cloak.
And all
who
touched Him
were healed
.
