Jesus
went on
from there
and came
to
His hometown,
accompanied
by
His disciples.
And
he
went out
from thence;
and he
cometh
into
his own
country;
and
his disciples follow
him
.
When the Sabbath came
, He began to teach in the synagogue ,
and many who
heard
Him were astonished .
“Where
did
this man get
these ideas
? ”
they
asked.
“
What is this
wisdom He
has
been
given ?
And how
can
He
perform
such miracles
?
And
when the sabbath was
come
, he began to teach in the synagogue :
and many hearing
him were astonished ,
saying,
Whence
hath
this man these things
? and,
What is the
wisdom that
is
given unto
this
man,
and `what
mean'
such mighty
works
wrought
by
his
hands
?
Isn’t
this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the
brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t
His sisters here with us as
well
? ”
And they took
offense
at
Him.
Is
not
this the carpenter, the son of Mary ,
and brother of James, and
Joses, and
Judas, and Simon? and
are
not
his sisters here with us? And they were
offended
in
him.
Then
Jesus said to
them, “Only
in his hometown
, among his relatives
, and in his own household
is
a
prophet
without
honor
. ”
And
Jesus said unto
them, A
prophet
is
not
without
honor,
save
in his own
country
, and
among his own
kin
, and in his own house
.
So
He could not
perform
any
miracles
there, except
to
lay
His hands on
a few of
the
sick and heal
them.
And
he could there do
no
mighty
work
, save
that
he
laid
his hands upon
a few sick folk,
and healed
them.
And He was
amazed
at
their unbelief. And He went around
from
village
to
village,
teaching
the people
.
And he marvelled
because
of
their unbelief. And he went round
about
the villages
teaching
.
Then
Jesus
called
the Twelve to
Him
and began to send them out
two
by two ,
giving
them authority over unclean spirits .
And
he
calleth
unto
him
the twelve ,
and began to send them forth
by two and
two;
and
he
gave
them authority over the
unclean spirits ;
He instructed
them to
take nothing but
a
staff
for the
journey —
no bread, no bag
, no
money in their belts—
and
he charged
them that
they
should
take nothing for `their'
journey ,
save
a
staff
only;
no bread, no wallet
, now
money in their purse;
and
to wear
sandals, but
not a
second
tunic
.
but
`
to go'
shod
with
sandals :
and
, `said
he',
put
not on
two
coats
.
And He told
them, “When
you
enter a house, stay
there until
you
leave
that
area
.
And he said
unto
them, Wheresoever
ye
enter into
a house, there abide
till
ye
depart
thence
.
If
anyone
will
not welcome
you or
listen
to
you, shake the dust off
your feet when
you
leave
that
place,
as
a testimony against
them. ”
And
whatsoever
place
shall
not receive
you ,
and
they
hear
you not
, as
ye
go
forth
thence,
shake off
the dust that
is
under
your feet for
a testimony unto
them.
So
they set
out and preached that the
people
should repent.
And
they went
out ,
and preached that `men'
should repent.
They also
drove
out many demons and healed
many of
the
sick, anointing
them with
oil
.
And
they cast
out many demons ,
and anointed
with
oil
many that
were
sick, and
healed
them.
Now
King Herod heard about
this,
for Jesus’
name had become well
known ,
and people
were
saying
, “
John the Baptist
has
risen from the dead !
That
is
why
miraculous
powers are
at
work in him. ”
And
king Herod heard `thereof';
for his
name had become known :
and he
said
, John the Baptizer
is
risen from the dead ,
and
therefore
do
these
powers work in him.
Others were
saying
, “He
is Elijah ,”
and still
others, “He
is a prophet, like
one of the prophets of
old
. ”
But
others said
, It
is Elijah .
And others said
, `It
is '
a prophet, `even'
as
one of the prophets.
But when
Herod heard
this
, he said, “
John, whom I beheaded, has
risen from
the
dead!”
But Herod, when
he heard
`thereof',
said, John, whom I beheaded, he
is
risen .
For Herod himself had ordered
that
John be
arrested
and bound and
imprisoned,
on
account
of his brother Philip’s
wife Herodias,
whom
Herod
had married.
For Herod himself had sent
forth
and
laid
hold
upon
John ,
and bound him
in
prison
for
the
sake
of Herodias,
his brother Philip's
wife ;
for
he
had married her
.
For John had
been
telling
Herod, “
It is not lawful for you
to have your
brother’s
wife !”
For John said
unto
Herod, It is not lawful for thee
to have thy
brother's
wife .
So
Herodias held
a
grudge
against John
and wanted
to kill him .
But
she had
been
unable,
And
Herodias set
herself
against him,
and desired
to kill him ;
and
she could
not;
because
Herod feared John and
protected
him
, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man. When he heard John’s
words
, he was greatly
perplexed; yet
he listened
to
him gladly.

Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man ,
and
kept
him
safe
. And
when he heard him
, he was much
perplexed; and
he heard
him gladly.
On
Herod’s
birthday
, her
opportunity
arose.
Herod held
a banquet
for
his nobles
and military
commanders
and the leading
men of Galilee .
And

a
convenient
day
was
come
, that
Herod on
his
birthday
made
a supper
to
his lords,
and the
high
captains,
and the chief
men of Galilee ;
When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his
guests,
and the king said to
the girl
, “
Ask me for
whatever
you
wish
, and I will give it to
you
. ”
and
when the daughter of Herodias herself
came in
and danced, she pleased Herod and them
that
sat
at
meat
with
him;
and the king said unto
the damsel
, Ask of
me whatsoever
thou
wilt
, and I will give it thee
.
And he swore
to
her, “Whatever
you
ask of me, I will give you
, up
to
half my kingdom !”
And he sware
unto
her, Whatsoever
thou
shalt
ask of me, I will give it
thee
, unto
the
half of
my kingdom .
Then
she went out and asked
her mother, “
What should
I request
? ”
And her
mother
answered
, “
The head of John the Baptist
. ”
And
she went out ,
and said
unto
her mother, What shall
I ask
? And she
said
, The head of John the Baptizer
.
At
once
the
girl
hurried
back
to
the king with
her
request:
“
I want
you
to
give me the head of John the Baptist on
a
platter
immediately
. ”
And
she
came
in
straightway
with
haste
unto
the king ,
and
asked,
saying,
I will
that
thou
forthwith
give me on
a
platter
the head of John the Baptist.
The king was consumed
with
sorrow,
but because
of his oaths and his
guests
, he did
not want
to
refuse
her.
And
the king was exceeding
sorry;
but for
the
sake
of his oaths ,
and of
them
that
sat
at
meat
, he would
not reject
her.
So
without
delay,
the king commanded that
John’s
head be
brought
in.
He sent
an
executioner,
who
went and beheaded him in the prison .
And
straightway
the king sent
forth
a
soldier
of
his
guard,
and
commanded to
bring
his
head :
and
he went and beheaded him in the prison ,
The
man
brought John’s
head on a platter and presented
it to the girl,
who
gave it to her mother.
and
brought his
head on a platter ,
and gave
it to the damsel;
and
the
damsel
gave it to her mother.
When John’s
disciples heard about
this
, they came and took his body
and placed
it in a tomb.
And
when his
disciples heard `thereof'
, they came and took up
his corpse,
and laid

Meanwhile,
the apostles gathered
around
Jesus and brought
Him news
of
all they had done and taught.
And
the apostles gather
themselves
together
unto
Jesus ;
and they
told
him all things,
whatsoever
they had done ,
and whatsoever
they
had
taught.
And He said
to
them, “
Come with
Me
privately
to
a solitary
place, and let
us
rest for
a while. ”
For many
people
were coming and going, and they did
not
even
have
time
to eat.
And he saith
unto
them, Come ye
yourselves
apart
into
a desert
place, and rest a while. For there
were many
coming and going, and they had
no
leisure
so
much
as
to eat.
So
they went away in a
boat by
themselves
to a solitary
place.
And
they went away in the

.
But
many
people saw them leaving
and recognized
them .
They ran together on foot from all the towns
and arrived
before
them.
And
`the
people '
saw them going,
and many
knew
`
them ',
and
they ran together there
on foot from all the cities,
and outwent
them.
When
Jesus
stepped
ashore
and saw a large
crowd
, He had compassion on them, because they were like
sheep without
a shepherd .
And He began to teach them many things.
And he
came
forth
and
saw a great
multitude
, and
he had compassion on them, because they were as
sheep not
having
a shepherd :
and he began to teach them many things.
By
now
the hour
was already
late.
So
the
disciples came to
Jesus
and said, “This
is
a
desolate
place, and the hour
is already
late.
And
when
the day
was now
far
spent,
his
disciples came unto
him,
and said, The
place is
desert
, and the day
is now
far
spent;
Dismiss
the
crowd
so
they can
go to
the surrounding
countryside
and villages and buy themselves something
to eat. ”

that
they may
go into
the country
and villages round
about,
and buy themselves somewhat
to eat.
But Jesus
told
them, “You
give them something
to eat. ”
They asked
Him, “Should
we go out
and spend
two hundred denarii
to
give
all
of them
bread to eat? ”
But he
answered

said
unto
them, Give ye
them to eat. And
they say
unto
him, Shall
we go and buy
two hundred shillings'
worth
of bread ,
and
give
them
to eat?
“Go
and see
how many loaves you
have ,”
He
told
them
. And after
checking
, they said
, “
Five —
and two fish
. ”
And he
saith
unto
them,
How many loaves have ye?
go
`and'
see
. And when
they
knew
, they say
, Five ,
and two fishes
.
Then
Jesus
directed
them to
have
the
people
sit in
groups
on
the green grass.
And
he
commanded
them that
all
should
sit down
by
companies
upon
the green grass.
So
they sat down in groups
of
hundreds and fifties.
And
they sat down in ranks,
by
hundreds ,
and by
fifties.
Taking
the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, Jesus
spoke
a
blessing
and broke
the loaves .
Then
He gave them
to His
disciples to set before the
people.
And He
divided
the two fish
among them all.
And
he
took
the five loaves and the two fishes,
and looking up to heaven, he
blessed,
and brake
the loaves ;
and
he gave to the
disciples to set before them;
and the two fishes
divided
he
among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied,
And
they all ate ,
and were filled.
and the
disciples
picked
up twelve
basketfuls
of
broken pieces of
bread
and fish
.
And they
took
up broken pieces ,

the
fishes
.
And there
were five thousand men who
had
eaten
the
loaves
.
And they
that
ate
the
loaves
were five thousand men.
Immediately
Jesus
made
His disciples get
into the boat and go on
ahead
of
Him to Bethsaida, while He dismissed
the crowd
.
And
straightway
he
constrained
his disciples to
enter
into the boat ,
and to
go before
`
him '
unto
the
other
side
to Bethsaida, while he himself
sendeth
the multitude
away
.
After bidding
them farewell
, He went
up
on
the mountain to pray.
And
after he
had
taken
leave
of
them, he departed
into
the mountain to pray.
When evening
came
, the boat was in the middle
of the sea, and Jesus
was
alone on land.
And
when even
was
come
, the boat was in the midst
of the sea, and he
alone on the
land.
He
could
see
that
the
disciples
were
straining
to
row
, because
the wind was against
them .
About the fourth watch of the night ,
Jesus
went
out
to
them, walking on the sea .
He intended
to
pass
by them ,
And
seeing
them
distressed
in
rowing
, for
the wind was contrary
unto
them ,
about the fourth watch of the night he
cometh
unto
them, walking on the sea ;
and
he would
have
passed
by them :
but when they saw Him walking on the sea, they
cried
out,
thinking
He
was a ghost —
but they,
when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed
that
it
was a ghost ,
and
cried
out;
for they all saw Him and were terrified
. But Jesus
spoke
up
at
once
: “Take
courage!
It is I .
Do
not
be afraid. ”
for they all saw him ,
and were troubled
. But he
straightway
spake
with
them,
and
saith
unto
them,
Be
of
good
cheer
: it is I ;
be not
afraid.
Then
He climbed
into the boat with
them,
and the wind died
down.
And the
disciples
were utterly
astounded,
And
he went
up
unto
them
into the boat ;
and the wind ceased:
and they
were sore
amazed
in
themselves;
for they had
not
understood about
the loaves, but their hearts
had
been
hardened.
for they understood not
concerning
the loaves, but their heart
was
hardened.
When they had crossed over, they landed
at
Gennesaret and moored the boat
.
And
when they had crossed over, they came
to
the
land
unto
Gennesaret ,
and moored to
the shore
.
As
soon
as
they got
out of the boat, the people recognized
Jesus
And
when
they were
come
out of the boat, straightway
`
the people '
knew
him,
and ran through
that whole region, carrying
the
sick
on
mats
to wherever
they heard He was.
and ran round
about
that whole region, and
began
to carry
about
on
their
beds
those
that
were
sick,
where
they heard he was.
And wherever
He went—
villages and
towns
and
countrysides—
they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged
Him just
to
let
them
touch the fringe
of His cloak.
And all
who
touched Him were healed
.
And wheresoever
he entered,
into
villages ,
or
into
cities,
or
into
the
country,
they laid the sick in the marketplaces ,
and besought
him that
they
might
touch if
it
were
but
the border
of his garment:
and as
many
as
touched him were made
whole
.
