Now the Passover and the Feast
of
Unleavened Bread were
two
days
away,
and the chief priests and scribes were
looking
for
a
covert
way
to
arrest
Jesus
and kill Him .
Now after
two
days
was
`
the feast
of'
the
passover and the unleavened bread :
and the chief priests and the
scribes sought
how
they
might
take
him
with
subtlety,
and kill him :
“But
not during the feast, ”
they
said,
“or
there may
be a riot
among
the people. ”
for
they
said,
Not during the feast, lest
haply
there shall
be a tumult
of
the people.
While Jesus
was in Bethany reclining
at
the
table
in the home
of Simon the Leper, a woman came
with
an alabaster jar
of expensive
perfume,
made
of pure nard .
She broke
open
the jar
and poured it on
Jesus’
head.
And
while he
was in Bethany in the house
of Simon the leper, as
he
sat
at
meat,
there
came
a woman having
an alabaster cruse
of ointment
of pure nard very
costly;
`and'
she brake
the cruse,
and poured it over
his
head.
Some of
those
present
, however
, expressed
their
indignation
to one
another:
“Why
this waste of perfume
?
But
there
were
some that
had
indignation
among
themselves
, `saying'
, To what
purpose
hath
this waste of the
ointment
been
made
?
It
could
have been sold for over
three hundred denarii
and the
money
given to the poor. ”
And they scolded
her.
For
this
ointment
might
have been sold for above
three hundred shillings,
and given to the poor. And they murmured
against
her.
But Jesus said, “Leave
her alone; why are
you
bothering
her? She has
done
a beautiful
deed
to
Me.
But Jesus said, Let
her alone; why trouble
ye
her? she hath
wrought
a good
work
on
me.
The poor you
will
always have
with you, and you
can help
them whenever
you
want.
But you
will
not always have
Me
.
For
ye
have
the poor always with you, and whensoever
ye
will
ye
can do
them good:
but me
ye
have
not always.
She has
done what she could to
anoint
My body in
advance
of
My
burial
.
She hath
done what she could ;
she
hath
anointed
my body beforehand
for
the
burying
.
And truly
I tell
you, wherever
the gospel is
preached in
all
the world, what
she
has
done
will
also be told
in
memory
of her. ”
And verily
I say
unto
you, Wheresoever
the gospel shall
be
preached throughout
the whole
world, that
also which
this
woman
hath
done
shall
be spoken
of for
a
memorial
of
her.
Then
Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to
the chief priests to
betray
Jesus
to
them.
And
Judas Iscariot, he
that
was
one of the twelve, went away
unto
the chief priests ,
that
he
might
deliver
him
unto
them.
They were delighted
to
hear
this
, and they
promised to give him money. So
Judas
began
to
look
for
an
opportunity
to
betray
Jesus
.
And
they ,
when
they
heard
it,
were glad
, and promised to give him money. And
he
sought
how
he
might
conveniently
deliver
him
`unto
them'
.
On the first day of the
Feast
of
Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb
was
to
be
sacrificed
, Jesus’
disciples asked
Him, “
Where do
You
want
us
to
prepare
for
You
to
eat the Passover? ”
And
on the first day of unleavened bread, when they
sacrificed
the passover, his
disciples say
unto
him, Where wilt
thou
that
we
go
and
make
ready
that
thou
mayest
eat the passover?
So
He sent
two of His disciples and told
them, “
Go into the city, and a man carrying
a jug
of water will
meet
you.
Follow him ,
And
he sendeth
two of his disciples ,
and saith
unto
them, Go into the city, and there
shall
meet
you
a man bearing
a pitcher
of water :
follow him ;
and whichever
house
he enters
, say to the owner
, ‘
The Teacher asks:
Where is My guest room
, where I may
eat the Passover with My disciples? ’
and wheresoever
he shall
enter
in
, say to the master
of
the
house
, The Teacher saith,
Where is my guest -chamber
, where I shall
eat the passover with my disciples?
And he will show you a large upper room ,
furnished and ready .
Make preparations
for us there
. ”
And he will himself
show you a large upper room furnished `
and '
ready :
and
there
make ready
for us.
So
the disciples left
and
went into the city, where
they
found everything
as Jesus
had described.
And they prepared
the Passover.
And
the disciples went forth,
and
came
into the city, and
found as he
had said
unto
them:
and they made
ready
the passover.
When evening came,
Jesus
arrived
with the Twelve.
And
when it
was
evening he
cometh
with the twelve.
And while
they were
reclining
and eating, Jesus said, “Truly
I tell
you, one of you who
is
eating
with
Me
will
betray Me. ”
And as
they sat
and were
eating, Jesus said, Verily
I say
unto
you, One of you shall
betray me ,
`even'
he
that
eateth
with
me
.
They began to be grieved
and to ask
Him one after
another
, “Surely
not
I? ”
They began to be sorrowful,
and to say
unto
him one by
one
, Is
it
I?
He answered
, “
It is one of the Twelve —the
one
who
is
dipping
his
hand
into
the
bowl
with Me.
And
he said
unto
them
, `
It is '
one of the twelve ,
he
that
dippeth
with me in
the
dish
.
The Son of Man will
go
just
as it is written about
Him ,
but woe to
that man by
whom He
is betrayed! It would
be
better
for him
if he had not been born. ”
For
the Son of man goeth,
even
as it is written of
him :
but woe unto
that man through
whom the
Son
of
man
is betrayed! good
were
it for that
man
if he had not been born.
While
they were eating, Jesus
took bread, spoke
a
blessing
and broke
it, and gave it
to the
disciples
, saying
, “
Take it;
this is My body. ”
And
as
they were eating, he
took bread, and when
he
had
blessed,
he
brake
it, and gave to them
, and
said
, Take ye:
this is my body.
Then
He took the
cup, gave
thanks, and
gave it
to them ,
and they all drank from
it.
And
he took a
cup, and
when
he
had
given
thanks, he
gave to them :
and they all drank of
it.
He said to
them, “
This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
And
he said unto
them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
Truly
I tell
you, I will
no longer
drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew
in the kingdom of God. ”
Verily
I say
unto
you, I shall
no more
drink of the fruit of the vine ,
until that day when I drink it new
in the kingdom of God.
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to
the Mount of Olives.
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto
the mount of Olives.
Then
Jesus said
to
them, “You
will
all fall
away,
for it is written :
‘
I will strike
the Shepherd, and the sheep will
be scattered. ’
And
Jesus saith
unto
them, All ye
shall
be
offended:
for it is written ,
I will smite
the shepherd, and the sheep shall
be scattered abroad
.
But
after I have
risen
, I will go ahead
of
you into Galilee. ”
Howbeit,
after I am
raised
up
, I will go before
you into Galilee.
Peter declared
, “Even
if
all fall
away
, I
never
will. ”
But
Peter said
unto
him
, Although
all shall
be
offended
, yet
will not
I
.
“Truly
I tell
you
, ”
Jesus
replied
, “
this very
night, before the rooster
crows
twice, you
will
deny Me three
times
. ”
And
Jesus
saith
unto
him,
Verily
I say
unto
thee
, that
thou
to-day
, `even'
this night, before the cock
crow
twice, shalt
deny me thrice
.
But Peter
kept
insisting
, “Even
if I have
to
die with You
, I will never
deny You
. ”
And all
the
others
said the
same
thing
.
But he
spake
exceedingly
vehemently
, If I must
die with thee
, I will not
deny thee
. And in
like
manner
also
said they
all
.
Then
they came
to
a place called
Gethsemane ,
and Jesus
told
His disciples, “
Sit here while I pray. ”
And
they come
unto
a place which
was
named
Gethsemane :
and he
saith
unto
his disciples, Sit ye
here ,
while I pray.
He took
with Him Peter ,
James ,
and John, and began to be deeply
troubled
and distressed
.
And
he taketh
with him Peter and
James and John, and began to be greatly
amazed,
and sore
troubled
.
Then
He said
to
them, “
My soul is consumed
with
sorrow
to
the
point
of
death .
Stay
here and keep
watch. ”
And
he saith
unto
them, My soul is exceeding
sorrowful
even
unto
death :
abide
ye
here ,
and watch.
Going
a little farther
, He
fell to
the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would
pass from Him.
And
he
went
forward
a little, and
fell on
the ground ,
and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might
pass away
from him.
“
Abba, Father, ”
He
said,
“
all things are possible for
You.
Take
this cup from Me .
Yet
not what I will, but what You
will
. ”
And
he
said,
Abba, Father, all things are possible unto
thee;
remove
this cup from me :
howbeit
not what I will, but what thou
wilt
.
Then
Jesus
returned
and found
them sleeping .
“
Simon, are
you
asleep
? ”
He
asked.
“Were
you
not able
to
keep
watch for
one hour?
And he
cometh,
and
findeth
them sleeping ,
and
saith
unto
Peter,
Simon, sleepest
thou
? couldest
thou
not watch one hour?
Watch and pray so
that you
will
not
enter into temptation .
For
the spirit is willing, but the body
is weak. ”
Watch and pray ,
that ye
enter not
into temptation :
the spirit indeed
is willing, but the flesh
is weak.
Again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing
.
And
again he went away ,
and prayed, saying the same words
.
And again Jesus
returned
and found them sleeping —
for their eyes were heavy .
And they did
not know
what to answer Him.
And again he
came,
and found them sleeping ,
for their eyes were very
heavy ;
and they knew
not what to answer him.
When
Jesus
returned
the third time, He
said
, “Are
you
still
sleeping
and resting?
That
is enough !
The hour has
come .
Look
, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
And
he
cometh
the third time, and
saith
unto
them
, Sleep
on
now,
and take
your
rest:
it
is enough ;
the hour is
come ;
behold
, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Rise
, let us go.
See
, My
betrayer
is approaching!”
Arise
, let us be
going:
behold
, he
that
betrayeth
me
is at
hand.
While Jesus
was
still
speaking
, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived,
accompanied
by
a crowd
armed
with swords and clubs
, sent
from the chief priests ,
scribes ,
and elders.
And
straightway,
while he
yet
spake
, cometh
Judas, one of the twelve, and
with
him
a multitude
with swords and staves
, from the chief priests and
the
scribes and the
elders.
Now the
betrayer
had arranged
a
signal
with
them :
“The
One
I kiss is the
man
; arrest
Him and lead Him away securely
. ”
Now he
that
betrayed
him
had given
them a
token,
saying,
Whomsoever
I shall
kiss ,
that
is he
; take
him ,
and lead him away safely
.
Going
directly
to
Jesus
, he said
, “
Rabbi !”
and kissed Him.
And
when
he
was
come
, straightway
he came
to
him
, and
saith,
Rabbi ;
and kissed him.
Then
the
men
seized
Jesus
and arrested
Him.
And they
laid
hands
on
him ,
and
took
him
.
And
one of the
bystanders
drew his sword and struck
the servant of the high priest, cutting
off his ear.
But
a
certain
one of them
that
stood
by
drew his sword ,
and smote
the servant of the high priest, and
struck
off his ear.
Jesus asked
the
crowd
, “Have
you
come out with swords and clubs
to arrest
Me as
you
would
an
outlaw
?
And
Jesus answered
and
said
unto
them
, Are
ye
come out ,
as
against
a
robber,
with swords and staves
to seize
me?
Every
day
I was with you ,
teaching
in the temple courts
, and you
did
not
arrest
Me .
But this has
happened
that the Scriptures would
be fulfilled. ”
I was daily
with you in the temple teaching
, and ye
took
me not:
but `
this is
done'
that the scriptures might
be fulfilled.
Then
everyone
deserted
Him and fled.
And
they
all
left
him ,
and fled.
One
young man who
had
been
following
Jesus
was
wearing
a linen cloth around
his body .
They caught
hold of
him ,
And
a
certain
young man followed
with
him,
having
a linen cloth cast
about
him,
over
`
his '
naked
`
body ':
and
they lay
hold on
him ;
but he pulled
free
of
the linen cloth and ran
away
naked.
but he left
the linen cloth ,
and fled
naked.
They led Jesus away to the high priest ,
and all the chief priests ,
elders ,
and scribes assembled
.
And
they led Jesus away to the high priest :
and there
come
together
with
him
all the chief priests and
the
elders and the
scribes.
Peter followed Him at
a
distance
, right
into the courtyard
of the high priest .
And he sat
with the officers and warmed
himself by
the fire.
And
Peter had
followed him afar
off
, even
within,
into the court
of the high priest ;
and he was
sitting
with the officers ,
and warming
himself in
the light
`of
the
fire '
.
Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin
were
seeking
testimony
against Jesus to put Him to death ,
but
they
did
not find
any
.
Now the chief priests and the whole council
sought
witness
against Jesus to put him to death ;
and
found
it
not.
For many bore
false witness against Jesus
, but
their testimony
was
inconsistent
.
For many bare
false witness against him
, and
their witness
agreed
not
together
.
Then
some
men
stood up and testified
falsely
against Him :
And
there
stood up certain,
and bare
false
witness
against him ,
saying,
“
We heard Him say, ‘
I will destroy this man-made
temple, and in three days I will build another that
is
made without hands. ’”
We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that
is
made
with
hands
, and in three days I will build another made without hands.
But
even their testimony
was
inconsistent
.
And
not
even so
did
their witness
agree
together
.
So
the high priest stood up before
them
and questioned
Jesus, “Have
You
no
answer
? What are
these men
testifying
against You
? ”
And
the high priest stood up in
the
midst,
and asked
Jesus, saying,
Answerest
thou
nothing
? what is
it
which
these witness
against thee
?
But Jesus
remained
silent
and made
no
reply
. Again the high priest questioned
Him, “Are
You
the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One
? ”
But he
held
his
peace,
and answered
nothing
. Again the high priest asked
him, and
saith
unto
him,
Art
thou
the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
“I
am,”
said
Jesus, “
and you
will
see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven. ”
And
Jesus said
, I
am:
and ye
shall
see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power ,
and coming with the clouds of heaven.
At
this,
the high priest tore
his clothes and declared
, “Why
do
we
need any
more
witnesses?
And
the high priest rent
his clothes ,
and saith
, What
further
need have
we
of
witnesses?
You
have heard the blasphemy .
What is
your
verdict
? ”
And they all condemned Him as
deserving
of death.
Ye
have heard the blasphemy :
what think
ye
? And they all condemned him to
be
worthy
of death.
Then
some of
them
began to spit on Him .
They
blindfolded
Him
, struck
Him with
their
fists
, and said
to Him, “
Prophesy !”
And the officers received Him with slaps
in
His
face
.
And
some began to spit on him, and
to
cover
his
face,
and
to
buffet
him, and to say
unto
him, Prophesy :
and the officers received him with blows
of
their
hands
.
While
Peter was in the courtyard
below
, one of the servant
girls
of the high priest came
down
And
as
Peter was beneath
in the court
, there
cometh
one of the maids
of the high priest ;
and saw
him
warming himself there.
She looked at
Peter
and said
, “You
also were
with Jesus
the Nazarene. ”
and seeing
Peter
warming himself ,
she looked upon
him,
and saith
, Thou
also wast
with the Nazarene ,
`even'
Jesus
.
But he denied it.
“
I do
not
know or
even
understand what you
are
talking
about,”
he
said.
Then
he went out to
the gateway,
and the rooster
crowed
.
But he denied ,
saying,
I neither
know ,
nor
understand what thou
sayest:
and
he went out into
the porch;
and the cock
crew
.
There
the servant
girl
saw him and again said
to those
standing
nearby
, “
This man
is one of them. ”
And
the maid
saw him ,
and began
again to say
to
them
that
stood
by
, This is `
one '
of them.
But he denied it again
. After a little while ,
those
standing
nearby
said once
more
to Peter, “Surely
you
are
one of them ,
for you
too
are
a Galilean
. ”
But he again
denied it. And
after a little while again
they
that
stood
by
said to Peter, of
a
truth
thou
art
`
one '
of them ;
for thou
art
a Galilaean
.
But he began to curse and swear, “
I do
not
know this man of whom you
speak !”
But he began to curse ,
and to
swear, I know not
this man of whom ye
speak .
And immediately
the rooster
crowed
a
second time. Then
Peter remembered
the word that Jesus had
spoken
to
him :
“
Before the rooster
crows
twice, you
will
deny Me three
times
. ”
And he broke
down
and
wept.
And straightway
the second time the
cock
crew
. And
Peter called
to
mind
the word ,
how
that Jesus said
unto
him ,
Before the cock
crow
twice, thou
shalt
deny me thrice
. And when
he thought
thereon,
he
wept.
