King James Version
Then
Jesus ,
full of the Holy Spirit,
returned from the
Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
And
Jesus being
full of the Holy Ghost
returned from Jordan ,
and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
where
for
forty days He
was
tempted by
the devil. He
ate
nothing
during
those days ,
and when they had
ended, He was
hungry
.
Being
forty days tempted of
the devil. And
in
those days he
did
eat
nothing:
and when they were
ended, he afterward
hungered
.
The devil said to
Him, “
If You
are
the Son of God, tell
this stone to
become
bread. ”
And
the devil said unto
him, If thou
be
the Son of God, command
this stone that
it
be
made
bread.
But
Jesus answered, “
It is written :
‘
Man shall not live on
bread alone. ’”
And
Jesus answered him
, saying,
It is written ,
That
man shall not live by
bread alone ,
but
by
every
word
of
God
.
Then
the devil led
Him up to
a
high place
and
showed
Him in
an
instant
all the kingdoms of the world.
And
the devil ,
taking
him up into
an
high mountain,
shewed
unto
him all the kingdoms of the world in
a
moment
of
time
.
“I
will give You
authority
over
all
these
kingdoms
and all
their
glory ,”
he
said.
“
For it
has
been
relinquished
to
me ,
and I can
give it to
anyone
I
wish
.
And
the
devil
said
unto
him,
All
this
power
will I
give thee,
and the
glory of
them:
for that
is
delivered
unto
me ;
and to
whomsoever
I will
I
give it.
So
if You
worship me, it
will
all be Yours
. ”
If thou
therefore
wilt
worship me, all shall
be thine
.
But
Jesus answered, “
It is written :
‘
Worship the Lord your
God and serve
Him only. ’”
And
Jesus answered and
said
unto
him
, Get
thee
behind
me,
Satan:
for
it is written ,
Thou
shalt
worship the Lord thy
God ,
and him only shalt
thou
serve
.
Then
the
devil
led
Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the
pinnacle of the temple .
“
If You
are
the Son of God, ”
he
said,
“throw
Yourself
down from here.
And
he
brought
him to Jerusalem ,
and set him on a
pinnacle of the temple ,
and
said
unto
him,
If thou
be
the Son of God, cast
thyself
down from hence:
For it is written :
‘
He will
command
His angels concerning
You
to guard
You
carefully;
For it is written ,
He shall
give
his angels charge
over
thee,
to keep
thee:
and they
will
lift
You
up
in their hands, so
that
You
will
not
strike
Your
foot against a stone. ’”
And in their hands they
shall
bear
thee
up
, lest
at
any
time
thou
dash
thy
foot against a stone.
But
Jesus answered
, “
It also
says
, ‘Do
not put
the Lord your
God to
the
test
. ’”
And
Jesus answering
said
unto
him
, It is
said
, Thou
shalt
not tempt
the Lord thy
God.
When the devil had finished
every
temptation, he left
Him until
an
opportune
time
.
And
when the devil had ended
all
the
temptation, he departed
from
him for
a
season
.
Jesus returned to
Galilee
in the power of the Spirit ,
and the
news
about
Him spread
throughout
the surrounding
region.
And
Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into
Galilee:
and there
went
out
a
fame
of
him through
all
the region round
about
.
He taught in their synagogues and
was
glorified by
everyone
.
And
he taught in their synagogues ,
being
glorified of
all
.
Then
Jesus
came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up .
As was
His custom, He entered
the synagogue on the Sabbath .
And when
He
stood up to read ,
And
he
came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up :
and,
as his custom was
, he went
into
the synagogue on the sabbath day,
and stood up for
to read .
the scroll
of the prophet Isaiah
was
handed
to
Him
. Unrolling
it
, He found the place where it was written :
And
there
was
delivered
unto
him
the book
of the prophet Esaias
. And
when
he
had
opened
the
book
, he found the place where it was written ,
“
The Spirit of the Lord is on
Me, because He has
anointed Me to preach good
news
to the poor .
He has
sent Me to proclaim
liberty
to the captives and recovery
of sight to the blind, to release
the
oppressed
,
The Spirit of the Lord is upon
me, because he hath
anointed me to preach the
gospel
to the poor ;
he hath
sent me to heal
the
brokenhearted,
to preach
deliverance
to
the captives ,
and recovering
of sight to the blind, to set
at
liberty
them
that
are
bruised
,
to proclaim
the year of the Lord’s
favor
. ”
To preach
the acceptable
year of the Lord
.
Then
He rolled
up
the scroll
, returned
it to the attendant
, and sat down. The eyes of everyone
in the synagogue were fixed
on Him ,
And
he closed
the book
, and
he
gave
it again
to the minister
, and sat down. And
the eyes of all
them
that
were
in the synagogue were fastened
on him .
and He began by
saying
, “Today
this Scripture
is fulfilled in your hearing
. ”
And he began to
say
unto
them
, This day
is this
scripture
fulfilled in your ears
.
All spoke
well
of
Him and marveled
at the gracious words that
came
from
His lips
. “Isn’t
this the
son of
Joseph
? ”
they
asked.
And
all bare
him witness,
and wondered
at the gracious words which
proceeded
out
of
his mouth
. And
they
said,
Is
not
this Joseph's
son?
Jesus
said to
them, “Surely
you
will quote
this proverb to
Me:
‘
Physician, heal yourself!
Do
here
in
Your
hometown
what
we have heard that
You
did
in Capernaum. ’”
And
he
said unto
them, Ye
will surely
say
unto
me
this proverb ,
Physician, heal thyself:
whatsoever
we have heard done
in Capernaum ,
do
also
here
in
thy
country
.
Then
He added
, “Truly
I tell
you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown
.
And
he said
, Verily
I say
unto
you, No prophet is accepted in his own
country
.
But I tell you truthfully
that
there
were
many widows in Israel in the time
of Elijah
, when the sky
was shut for
three and
a
half
years and great famine swept
over
all the land .
But I tell you of
a
truth,
many widows were
in Israel in the days
of Elias
, when the heaven
was shut up
three years and six
months,
when
great famine was
throughout
all the land ;
Yet
Elijah
was
not
sent
to
any
of them, but
to
the
widow
of Zarephath
in
Sidon.
But
unto
none
of them was
Elias
sent
, save
unto
Sarepta,
a
city
of Sidon ,
unto
a
woman
that
was
a
widow
.
And there
were
many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha
the prophet .
Yet
not
one
of them was cleansed —only
Naaman the Syrian. ”
And many lepers were
in Israel in the time of Eliseus
the prophet ;
and
none
of them was cleansed ,
saving
Naaman the Syrian.
On
hearing
this,
all the
people
in the synagogue were enraged.
And
all they
in the synagogue ,
when
they
heard
these
things,
were filled
with
wrath,
They
got
up, drove
Him out of the town
, and led Him to
the brow of the hill on
which
the
town
was built, in
order
to
throw
Him over
the
cliff
.
And
rose
up, and
thrust
him out of the city
, and led him unto
the brow of the hill whereon
their
city
was built, that
they
might
cast
him down
headlong
.
But Jesus
passed
through the crowd
and
went on
His way .
But he
passing
through the midst
of
them
went his way ,
Then
He
went
down to Capernaum, a town
in
Galilee, and on the Sabbath He
began
to
teach
the
people
.
And
came
down to Capernaum, a city
of
Galilee, and taught
them
on the sabbath days
.
They were astonished at His teaching,
because
His message
had
authority
.
And
they were astonished at his doctrine:
for
his word
was
with
power
.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed
by
the
spirit of an unclean demon.
He
cried out in
a loud voice,
And
in the synagogue there was a man ,
which
had
a
spirit of an unclean devil,
and
cried out with
a loud voice,
“Ha!
What do You
want
with us
, Jesus of Nazareth? Have
You
come to destroy us? I know who You
are—
the Holy One of God !”
Saying,
Let
us
alone;
what have
we
to
do with thee
, thou
Jesus of Nazareth? art
thou
come to destroy us? I know thee
who thou
art;
the Holy One of God .
But
Jesus rebuked the
demon.
“Be
silent!”
He
said.
“
Come out of him !”
At
this,
the demon
threw
the man
down
before
them
all
and
came out without
harming
him.
And
Jesus rebuked him,
saying,
Hold
thy
peace,
and
come out of him .
And
when
the devil
had
thrown
him
in
the midst,
he
came out of
him ,
and
hurt
him
not
.
All
the
people
were overcome
with
amazement
and asked
one
another
, “
What is this message?
With authority and power He commands
the unclean spirits, and they come out !”
And
they
were all
amazed,
and spake
among
themselves
, saying,
What a
word
is this !
for
with authority and power he commandeth
the unclean spirits, and they come out .
And the news
about
Jesus
spread
throughout
the surrounding
region
.
And the fame
of
him
went
out
into
every
place
of
the country
round
about
.
After
Jesus
had
left
the
synagogue,
He went
to
the
home
of Simon
, whose
mother -in-law
was suffering
from
a high
fever .
So
they appealed
to
Jesus
on
her behalf,
And
he arose
out
of the
synagogue
, and
entered
into
Simon's
house.
And
Simon's
wife's
mother was taken
with
a great
fever ;
and
they besought
him
for
her .
and He stood over her and rebuked the fever ,
and it left her .
And she got
up
at
once
and began
to
serve
them.
And he stood over her ,
and rebuked the fever ;
and it left her :
and immediately
she arose
and ministered
unto
them.
At
sunset
, all who
were
ill
with various
diseases were
brought to
Jesus,
and laying
His hands on each
one, He
healed them.
Now
when
the
sun
was
setting
, all they
that
had
any
sick
with divers
diseases brought them
unto
him;
and he
laid
his hands on every
one of
them
, and
healed them.
Demons
also came out of many people
, shouting
, “You
are
the Son of God !”
But
He
rebuked
the
demons
and would
not
allow
them to speak ,
because
they knew He was the
Christ.
And
devils
also came out of many, crying
out
, and
saying,
Thou
art
Christ
the Son of God .
And he
rebuking
them suffered
them
not
to speak :
for
they knew that
he was Christ.
At
daybreak
, Jesus
went out
to
a solitary
place ,
and the crowds
were
looking
for
Him .
They
came to
Him and tried
to
keep
Him from leaving
.
And
when
it
was
day
, he
departed
and
went into
a desert
place :
and the people
sought
him ,
and
came unto
him ,
and stayed
him ,
that
he
should
not
depart
from them
.
But
Jesus
told
them, “
I must preach the good
news
of
the
kingdom of God to the
other towns
as
well,
because
that
is
why
I was
sent. ”
And
he
said
unto
them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities
also:
for
therefore
am
I sent.
And He continued
to
preach
in the synagogues of Judea
.
And he preached
in the synagogues of Galilee
.
