Now
in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being
governor of Judaea
, and
Herod being
tetrarch of Galilee, and
his brother Philip tetrarch of the
region
of
Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while
Pontius Pilate was
governor of Judea
, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
in
the highpriesthood
of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto
John the
son of Zacharias
in the wilderness.
during
the high
priesthood
of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to
John son of Zechariah
in the wilderness.
And
he came
into all the region round
about
the Jordan, preaching the
baptism of repentance unto
remission
of sins ;
He went
into all the region around
the Jordan, preaching a
baptism of repentance for
the
forgiveness
of sins ,
as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet ,
The
voice of one crying
in the wilderness, Make
ye
ready
the way of
the Lord, Make his
paths
straight.
as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet :
“A
voice of one calling
in the wilderness, ‘Prepare
the way for
the Lord, make straight paths
for
Him
.
Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall
be
brought
low ;
And
the crooked shall become
straight, And the rough ways smooth ;
Every valley shall be filled in
, and every mountain and hill made
low .
The crooked ways
shall be
made
straight, and the rough ways smooth .
And all flesh
shall
see the
salvation of
God
.
And all humanity
will
see God’s
salvation. ’”
He
said therefore
to the multitudes
that
went
out to be baptized of
him, Ye
offspring
of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to
come
?
Then
John
said to the crowds
coming
out to be baptized by
him, “You
brood
of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming
wrath?
Bring
forth
therefore
fruits
worthy
of
repentance
, and begin
not to say within
yourselves, We have Abraham to
our father :
for I say
unto
you ,
that God
is
able
of these stones to
raise up children unto
Abraham.
Produce
fruit
, then,
in
keeping
with
repentance.
And do
not begin
to say to
yourselves, ‘
We have Abraham as
our father .’
For I tell
you that out
of these stones God
can
raise up children for
Abraham.
And
even
now
the axe also
lieth
at the root of the trees :
every tree therefore
that bringeth
not forth
good fruit is
hewn
down ,
and cast
into the fire.
The axe lies
ready
at the root of the trees ,
and
every tree that does
not produce
good fruit will
be
cut
down and thrown
into the fire. ”
And
the multitudes
asked him, saying,
What then must
we do?
The crowds
asked him, “
What then should
we do? ”
And
he
answered
and
said
unto
them
, He
that
hath
two coats,
let
him
impart
to
him that
hath
none ;
and he
that
hath
food ,
let
him
do likewise
.
John
replied
, “Whoever
has
two tunics
should
share
with
him who
has
none ,
and whoever
has
food should
do the
same
. ”
And
there
came also
publicans
to be baptized, and
they said
unto
him,
Teacher
, what must
we do?
Even
tax
collectors
came to be baptized .
“Teacher
, ”
they asked
, “
what should
we do? ”
And
he
said
unto
them,
Extort
no more than that
which
is
appointed
you.
“Collect
no more than you are
authorized,”
he
answered
.
And
soldiers also
asked him, saying,
And we,
what must
we do? And
he
said
unto
them,
Extort
from
no
man
by violence
, neither
accuse
`any
one'
wrongfully;
and
be content with your wages.
Then
some
soldiers asked him, “
And what should
we do? ”
“Do
not
take
money
by force
or
false
accusation
, ”
he
said.
“
Be content with your wages. ”
And
as
the people were in
expectation,
and all men
reasoned
in their hearts concerning
John ,
whether
haply
he
were
the Christ ;
The people were waiting
expectantly
and were
all wondering
in their hearts if
John could
be
the Christ .
John answered ,
saying
unto
them
all ,
I indeed
baptize you with water ;
but there
cometh
he
that
is
mightier
than I, the latchet
of whose shoes
I am not worthy to unloose:
he shall
baptize you in
the Holy Spirit and `in'
fire :
John answered all of
them:
“
I baptize you with water ,
but One
more
powerful
than I will
come
, the straps
of whose sandals
I am not worthy to untie.
He will
baptize you with
the Holy Spirit and with
fire .
whose
fan
is in his hand ,
thoroughly
to cleanse
his threshing -
floor ,
and to gather the wheat into his garner
; but the
chaff
he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
His
winnowing
fork
is in His hand to clear
His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn
; but He will burn up the
chaff
with unquenchable fire. ”
With many other exhortations therefore
preached
he
good tidings
unto
the people ;
With these
and
many other exhortations ,
John
proclaimed
the
good news
to
the people .
but Herod the tetrarch ,
being
reproved
by
him
for
Herodias
his brother's
wife ,
and for
all the evil
things
which
Herod
had done,
But when
he
rebuked
Herod the tetrarch regarding
his brother’s
wife Herodias
and all the evils
he
had done,
added this also
to them all ,
that
he shut
up
John in prison.
Herod
added this to them all :
He locked
John up
in prison.
Now
it
came
to
pass,
when all the people were baptized, that,
Jesus also
having
been
baptized ,
and praying, the
heaven was opened,
When all the people were being
baptized, Jesus was
baptized too.
And as
He
was
praying, heaven was opened,
and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form ,
as
a dove ,
upon
him,
and a voice came out
of
heaven ,
Thou
art
my beloved Son; in thee
I am well pleased.
and the Holy Spirit descended on
Him
in a bodily form like
a dove .
And a voice came from
heaven :
“You
are
My beloved Son; in You
I am well pleased. ”
And
