Then
Jesus
entered Jericho
and was passing through.
And
he
entered and was passing through Jericho
.
And there
was
a man named
Zacchaeus ,
a chief tax
collector
, who
was very
wealthy
.
And behold,
a man called
by
name
Zacchaeus ;
and
he
was
a chief publican
, and
he
was rich
.
He was
trying
to see who
Jesus was ,
but
could not see
over
the crowd because he was small
in
stature.
And
he sought
to see Jesus who
he
was ;
and
could not for
the crowd ,
because he was little
of
stature.
So
he ran on ahead
and climbed a sycamore
tree to see Him ,
since
Jesus
was about
to pass that way.
And
he ran on before,
and climbed up
into
a sycomore
tree to see him :
for
he
was to pass that way.
When Jesus came to that
place, He looked up and said, “
Zacchaeus, hurry
down
, for I must stay
at your
house today
. ”
And
when Jesus came to the
place, he looked up ,
and said unto
him
, Zacchaeus, make
haste
, and
come
down;
for to-day
I must abide
at thy
house.
So
Zacchaeus
hurried
down and welcomed
Him joyfully.
And
he
made
haste,
and
came
down ,
and received
him joyfully.
And all
who
saw this
began
to
grumble
, saying, “
He has
gone to be
the
guest
of
a sinful
man !”
And when
they
saw it
, they
all
murmured,
saying, He is
gone in
to lodge
with
a man that
is
a
sinner.
But
Zacchaeus stood up
and said to
the Lord, “Look
, Lord, half of my possessions
I give to the poor ,
and if I have cheated
anyone
, I will
repay
it
fourfold. ”
And
Zacchaeus stood ,
and said unto
the Lord, Behold
, Lord, the
half of my goods
I give to the poor ;
and if I have wrongfully
exacted
aught
of
any
man
, I restore
fourfold.
Jesus said to
him, “Today
salvation has
come to this house, because
this
man
too
is a son of Abraham.
And
Jesus said unto
him, To-day
is
salvation come to this house, forasmuch
as
he
also
is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the
lost. ”
For the Son of man came to seek and to save that
which
was
lost.
While
the
people
were
listening
to
this
, Jesus
proceeded
to
tell
them
a parable, because He was near
Jerusalem and they thought
the kingdom of God would
appear imminently
.
And
as
they
heard
these
things
, he
added
and
spake
a parable, because he was nigh
to
Jerusalem ,
and `because'
they supposed
that
the kingdom of God was
immediately
to
appear.
So
He said, “
A man
of
noble
birth
went to
a distant
country to
lay
claim
to his
kingship
and then
return.
He said therefore
, A certain
nobleman
went into
a far
country ,
to receive
for
himself
a
kingdom,
and to
return.
Beforehand,
he called ten of his servants
and gave them ten minas.
‘Conduct
business
with
this
until
I
return
, ’
he
said.
And
he called ten servants
of his ,
and gave them ten pounds
, and
said unto
them,
Trade
ye
`herewith'
till
I
come
.
But his subjects
hated him and sent a
delegation
after him to
say
, ‘
We do
not want
this man to
rule
over us. ’
But his citizens
hated him ,
and sent an
ambassage
after him, saying,
We will
not that
this man reign
over us.
When he returned
from
procuring
his
kingship
, he
summoned
the servants to
whom he had given the money, to find
out
what each
one
had earned
.
And
it
came
to
pass,
when he was
come
back
again
, having
received
the kingdom,
that
he
commanded
these
servants ,
unto
whom he had given the money, to be
called
to
him,
that
he
might
know
what they
had gained
by
trading
.
The first servant
came forward
and
said
, ‘Master
, your
mina
has
produced
ten more minas
. ’
And
the first came before
him
, saying
, Lord,
thy
pound
hath
made
ten pounds
more.
His
master
replied
, ‘
Well done, good servant !
Because you
have
been
faithful in a very small
matter
, you
shall
have authority over ten cities. ’
And
he
said
unto
him
, Well done, thou
good servant :
because thou
wast
found
faithful in a very little
, have thou
authority over ten cities.
The second servant
came and
said
, ‘Master
, your
mina
has
made five minas
. ’
And
the second came, saying
, Thy
pound,
Lord,
hath
made five pounds
.
And to
this
one
he said, ‘You
shall
have
authority
over five cities. ’
And he said unto
him
also
, Be
thou
also
over five cities.
Then
another servant
came and
said
, ‘Master
, here is your
mina
, which I have
laid away
in a piece
of
cloth.
And
another came, saying
, Lord,
behold,
`
here is '
thy
pound
, which I kept
laid up
in a napkin:
For I was
afraid
of
you
, because you
are
a
harsh
man .
You
withdraw
what
you
did
not deposit
and reap
what
you
did
not sow. ’
for I feared
thee
, because thou
art
an
austere
man :
thou
takest
up
that
which
thou
layedst
not down,
and reapest
that
which
thou
didst
not sow.
His
master
replied,
‘You
wicked
servant
, I
will judge you
by
your
own
words
. So
you
knew
that I am a
harsh
man, withdrawing
what
I did
not deposit
and reaping what
I did not sow ?
He
saith
unto
him
, Out
of
thine
own
mouth
will I
judge thee,
thou
wicked
servant
. Thou
knewest
that I am an
austere
man, taking
up
that
which
I laid
not down,
and reaping that
which
I did not sow ;
Why
then did
you
not deposit
my money in
the bank, and upon
my
return
I could
have collected
it with interest? ’
then wherefore
gavest
thou
not my money into
the bank, and I at
my
coming
should
have required
it with interest?
Then
he told
those
standing
by, ‘
Take the
mina
from him and give it to
the one
who
has
ten minas
. ’
And
he said
unto
them
that
stood
by, Take away
from him the
pound,
and give it unto
him
that
hath
the ten pounds
.
‘Master,’
they said, ‘
he already
has
ten !’
And
they said unto
him
, Lord,
he hath
ten pounds.
He
replied,
‘
I tell
you that everyone
who
has
will
be given more
; but the
one
who
does
not have
, even what
he has
will
be taken away from him.
I say
unto
you ,
that unto
every
one
that
hath
shall
be given; but from
him
that
hath
not, even that
which
he hath
shall
be taken away from him.
And
these enemies
of
mine who
were
unwilling
for
me
to
rule
over them, bring them
here
and slay them in
front
of
me. ’”
But
these mine enemies,
that
would
not
that
I
should
reign
over them, bring hither,
and slay them before
me.
After
Jesus
had said
this
, He went on ahead
, going up to Jerusalem.
And
when
he
had thus
spoken
, he went on before
, going up to Jerusalem.
As
He approached
Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of
Olives
, He sent out
two of His
disciples,
And
it
came
to
pass,
when
he drew
nigh
unto
Bethphage and Bethany ,
at the mount that
is
called
Olivet
, he sent two of the
disciples,
saying, “
Go into the village ahead
of
you ,
and
as you
enter it,
you
will
find a colt tied there
, on
which
no one
has
ever sat .
Untie
it
and bring it
here
.
saying, Go your
way
into the village over
against
`
you ';
in
which
as ye
enter ye
shall
find a colt tied, whereon
no man
ever yet
sat :
loose
him,
and bring him
.
If anyone
asks
, ‘
Why are
you
untying
it?’
tell
him, ‘
The Lord needs
it
. ’”
And
if any
one
ask
you
, Why do
ye
loose
him ?
thus
shall
ye
say
, The Lord hath
need
of
him
.
So
those
who
were sent went out
and found it
just
as Jesus
had told
them.
And
they
that
were sent went away,
and found even
as he
had said
unto
them.
As they were untying
the colt, its
owners asked
, “
Why are
you
untying
the colt? ”
And
as they were loosing
the colt, the
owners thereof
said
unto
them
, Why loose
ye
the colt?
“
The Lord needs
it,”
they
answered
.
And
they
said,
The Lord hath
need
of
him
.
Then
they led
the
colt
to Jesus ,
threw their cloaks
over
it
, and put
Jesus on
it
.
And
they brought
him
to Jesus :
and
they
threw their garments
upon
the
colt
, and set
Jesus thereon
.
As He rode
along
, the
people
spread their cloaks
on
the road
.
And
as he went
, they
spread their garments
in
the way
.
And as He approached
the descent from
the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God joyfully
in
a loud voice for all the miracles
they had seen :
And as he was
now
drawing
nigh,
`even'
at
the descent of
the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the
disciples began to rejoice
and
praise God with
a loud voice for all the mighty
works
which
they had seen ;
“
Blessed is the King who
comes
in the name of the Lord !”
“
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest !”
saying,
Blessed `
is '
the King that
cometh
in the name of the Lord :
peace in heaven ,
and glory in the highest .
But
some of the Pharisees in
the crowd
said to
Him, “
Teacher, rebuke Your
disciples !”
And
some of the Pharisees from
the multitude
said unto
him, Teacher, rebuke thy
disciples .
“
I tell you ,”
He
answered
, “
if they
remain
silent
, the very
stones will cry out. ”
And
he
answered
and
said,
I tell you that
, if these
shall
hold
their
peace
, the stones will cry out.
As
Jesus
approached
Jerusalem
and saw the city ,
He
wept over it
And when
he
drew
nigh,
he
saw the city and
wept over it ,
and
said
, “
If only
you
had
known on
this day what
would
bring
you
peace! But now it
is
hidden
from your
eyes.
saying
, If thou
hadst
known in
this day ,
even
thou,
the
things
which
belong
unto
peace! but now they
are
hid
from thine
eyes.
For the days will
come upon you
when your
enemies will
barricade
you
and surround
you
and hem
you
in on every side .
For the days shall
come upon thee,
when thine
enemies shall
cast
up
a
bank
about
thee,
and compass
thee
round,
and keep
thee
in on every side ,
They
will
level
you
to the ground —you
and the
children within your
walls.
They will
not leave one stone on
another ,
because you
did
not recognize
the time of your
visitation from
God
. ”
and
shall
dash
thee
to the ground ,
and thy
children within thee;
and
they shall
not leave in
thee
one stone upon
another ;
because thou
knewest
not the time of thy
visitation.
Then
Jesus
entered the temple courts
and began to drive
out those
who
were
selling
there.
And
he
entered into
the temple ,
and began to cast
out them
that
sold,
He
declared
to
them, “
It is written :
‘
My house will
be a house of prayer .’
But you
have made it ‘
a den of robbers. ’”
saying
unto
them, It is written ,
And
my house shall
be a house of prayer :
but ye
have made it a den of robbers.
Jesus
was teaching at
the temple every
day,
but the chief priests ,
scribes ,
and leaders
of the people were
intent
on
killing
Him .
And
he
was teaching daily
in
the temple .
But the chief priests and
the
scribes and the
principal
men
of the people sought
to
destroy
him :
Yet
they could not find a
way
to
do so,
because
all
the people hung on
His
words
.
and
they could not find what
they
might
do ;
for
the people all
hung upon
him,
listening
.
