I am the man who
has seen affliction under
the rod of God’s
wrath.
I am the man that
has seen affliction by
the rod of his
wrath.
He has driven
me away
and made
me walk in darkness instead
of
light.
He has led
me and caused
me to
walk in darkness ,
and
not
in
light.
Indeed,
He keeps
turning
His hand against
me
all day long
.
Surely
against
me
he turns
his hand again
and
again
all the
day.
He
has
worn
away
my flesh and skin; He has shattered
my bones.
My flesh and my
skin has
he
made
old
; he has broken
my bones.
He has besieged
me and surrounded
me with bitterness
and hardship
.
He has built
against
me ,
and compassed
me with gall
and travail
.
He has made me dwell in darkness
like
those dead for
ages
.
He has made me to
dwell in dark
places,
as
those that
have
been
long
dead.
He has walled me in
so
I cannot
escape
; He has weighed
me
down
with
chains
.
He has walled me about,
that
I can't
go
forth
; he has made
my
chain
heavy
.
Even
when I cry out
and plead
for help, He shuts out my prayer.
Yes,
when I cry ,
and call
for help, he shuts out my prayer.
He has barred
my ways with cut
stones
; He has made my paths crooked.
He has walled
up
my ways with hewn
stone
; he has made my paths crooked.
He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding
in ambush
.
He is to
me
as
a bear lying in wait, as
a lion in secret
places
.
He forced
me
off
my path
and tore
me to
pieces; He left
me without
help
.
He has
turned
aside
my ways,
and pulled
me in
pieces; he has
made
me desolate
.
He bent His bow and set me as the
target
for His
arrow.
He has
bent his bow ,
and set me as a
mark
for the
arrow.
He pierced
my
kidneys
with
His arrows
.
He has
caused
the
shafts
of
his quiver
to
enter
into
my
reins
.
I am a laughingstock
to all my people ;
they
mock
me
in
song all day long
.
I am become
a derision
to all my people ,
and
their
song all the
day.
He has filled me with bitterness ;
He has intoxicated
me with wormwood.
He has filled me with bitterness ,
he has sated
me with wormwood.
He has ground
my teeth with gravel and
trampled
me in
the
dust
.
He has also
broken
my teeth with gravel stones;
he
has
covered
me with
ashes
.
My soul has
been
deprived
of
peace; I have
forgotten
what
prosperity is
.
You
have
removed
my soul far
off
from
peace; I forgot
prosperity.
So
I say
, “
My strength has
perished, along
with
my hope
from the
LORD
. ”
I said
, My strength is
perished, and
my expectation
from Yahweh
.
Remember my affliction and wandering
, the wormwood and the gall.
Remember my affliction and my
misery
, the wormwood and the gall.
Surely
my soul remembers and is humbled
within me.
My soul still
remembers them,
and is bowed
down
within me.
Yet
I
call
this to mind ,
and
therefore I
have hope :
This I
recall
to my
mind ;
therefore have I
hope .
Because
of the
loving devotion
of
the
LORD
we are not consumed, for
His mercies
never
fail.
[It
is
of ]
Yahweh's
loving kindnesses
that
we are not consumed, because
his compassion
doesn't
fail.
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness !
They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness .
“The
LORD
is my portion, ”
says my soul ,
“
therefore I
will hope in Him. ”
Yahweh
is my portion, says my soul ;
therefore will I
hope in him.
The
LORD
is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who
seeks Him.
Yahweh
is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that
seeks him.
It is good to
wait
quietly for the salvation of the
LORD
.
It is good that
a
man
should
hope
and
quietly wait
for the salvation of Yahweh
.
It is good for a man to
bear the yoke while
he
is
still
young
.
It is good for a man that
he
bear the yoke in
his
youth
.
Let him sit alone in
silence, for
God
has disciplined
him.
Let him sit alone and
keep
silence, because
he
has laid
it
on
him.
Let him bury
his face
in the dust —
perhaps
there is
still
hope.
Let him put
his mouth
in the dust ,
if
so
be
there may
be
hope.
Let him offer
his cheek to the
one
who would
strike
him; let him be filled with reproach.
Let him give
his cheek to him
who strikes
him; let him be filled full
with reproach.
For the Lord will not cast us
off forever.
For the Lord will not cast off forever.
Even
if
He causes
grief, He
will show
compassion according to His abundant
loving devotion
.
For
though
he cause
grief, yet
will he
have
compassion according to the
multitude
of
his loving kindnesses
.
For He does not willingly
afflict or
grieve the sons
of men.
For he does not afflict willingly,
nor
grieve the children
of men.
To crush underfoot
all the prisoners of the land
,
To crush under
foot
all the prisoners of the earth
,
to deny
a man justice
before the Most High,
To turn
aside
the
right
of
a man before the face
of
the
Most High,
to subvert a man in his lawsuit—
of
these
the Lord does
not
approve.
To subvert a man in his cause,
the Lord doesn't
approve.
Who has
spoken
and it came
to pass, unless
the Lord has
ordained
it?
Who is
he
who
says,
and it comes
to pass, when
the Lord doesn't
command
it?
Do
not
both
adversity
and good come from
the mouth of the Most High?
Doesn't
evil
and good come out
of
the mouth of the Most High?
Why should
any
mortal
man complain, in
view
of his sins?
Why does
a
living
man complain, a
man
for
the
punishment
of his sins?
Let us examine
and test
our ways, and turn back
to the
LORD
.
Let us search
and try
our ways, and turn again
to Yahweh
.
Let us lift up our hearts
and
hands to God in heaven:
Let us lift up our heart
with
our
hands to God in the
heavens.
“
We have sinned
and rebelled; You have not forgiven
. ”
We have transgressed
and have
rebelled; you have not pardoned
.
You have covered Yourself
in
anger and pursued us; You have killed without
pity
.
You have covered with
anger and pursued us; you have killed ,
you
have
not
pitied
.
You have covered Yourself with a cloud that no prayer can pass through.
You have covered yourself with a cloud ,
so
that no prayer can pass through.
You have made us scum
and refuse among
the nations
.
You have made us an
off-scouring
and refuse in
the midst
of
the
peoples
.
All our enemies open
their mouths
against us.
All our enemies have
opened
their mouth
wide
against us.
Panic
and pitfall
have
come upon
us —
devastation and destruction.
Fear
and the
pit
are
come on
us ,
devastation and destruction.
Streams of tears
flow
from
my
eyes
over
the destruction of the daughter of my people.
My
eye
runs
down
with
streams of water,
for
the destruction of the daughter of my people.
My eyes
overflow
unceasingly
, without relief
,
My eye
pours
down
, and
doesn't
cease,
without any
intermission
,
until the
LORD
looks
down from heaven and
sees
.
Until Yahweh
look
down ,
and
see
from heaven.
My eyes
bring
grief
to
my soul because of all the daughters of my city.
My eye
affects
my soul ,
because of all the daughters of my city.
Without
cause
my
enemies
hunted
me like a bird.
They
have
chased
me sore
like a bird ,
those
who
are
my
enemies
without
cause
.
They dropped
me
alive
into
a
pit
and cast stones
upon
me.
They have
cut
off
my
life
in
the
dungeon,
and have
cast a
stone
on
me.
The
waters flowed over my head ,
and
I thought
I was
going
to
die
.
Waters flowed over my head ;
I said,
I am
cut
off
.
I called on Your name, O
LORD
, out of the depths
of
the
Pit
.
I called on your name, Yahweh
, out of the lowest
dungeon
.
You heard my plea:
“Do
not
ignore
my cry for
relief
. ”
You heard my voice;
don't
hide
your
ear
at
my breathing,
at
my
cry.
You drew near when
I called on You; You said, “Do
not
be afraid. ”
You drew near in
the
day
that
I called on you; you said, Don't
be afraid.
You defend
my cause,
O
Lord
; You redeem
my life.
Lord,
you have
pleaded
the
causes
of
my soul
; you have
redeemed
my life.
You have seen ,
O
LORD,
the
wrong done
to
me
; vindicate
my cause !
Yahweh,
you have seen my
wrong; judge
you
my cause .
You have seen all their malice,
all their plots
against me.
You have seen all their vengeance
and
all their devices
against me.
O
LORD,
You have heard their insults
, all their plots
against me —
You have heard their reproach
, Yahweh,
and
all their devices
against me ,
the slander
and
murmuring
of my
assailants
against me all day long
.
The lips
of those
that
rose
up
against me ,
and
their
device
against
me
all the
day.
When
they
sit
and
when
they
rise,
see how
they
mock
me
in
song.
See you
their
sitting
down,
and
their
rising
up;
I
am
their
song.
You will pay
them back
what
they
deserve
, O
LORD
, according to the work of their hands.
You will render
to
them a
recompense
, Yahweh
, according to the work of their hands.
Put
a
veil
of anguish
over
their
hearts;
may
Your curse be
upon
them !
You
will
give
them
hardness
of heart,
your curse to
them .
You will pursue them in anger and exterminate
them from under Your
heavens ,
O
LORD
.
You will pursue them in anger ,
and destroy
them from under the
heavens of
Yahweh
.
