Then
the men of Ephraim said to Gideon
, “
Why have you done
this
to
us ?
Why
did
you fail
to
call us when you went to fight against
Midian? ”
And
they contended
with him violently
.
The men of Ephraim said to him
, Why have you served
us thus,
that
you didn't
call us ,
when you went to fight with
Midian? They did
chide
with him sharply
.
But
Gideon
answered
them, “Now
what have I accomplished
compared
to
you? Are
not
the gleanings
of Ephraim better than the grape
harvest
of Abiezer?
He
said
to
them, What have I now
done
in
comparison
with
you? Isn't
the gleaning
of the
grapes
of
Ephraim better than the vintage
of Abiezer?
God has delivered Oreb
and
Zeeb,
the two
princes of Midian, into
your
hand.
What was I able to do compared
to
you? ”
When he had said this,
their
anger
against
him
subsided
.
God has delivered into
your
hand
the princes of Midian, Oreb
and
Zeeb:
and
what was I able to do in
comparison
with
you? Then
their
anger
was
abated
toward
him,
when he had said that
.
Then
Gideon and
his
three
hundred
men
came to the Jordan and crossed
it
, exhausted
yet still
in
pursuit
.
Gideon came to the Jordan ,
[
and ]
passed
over
, he,
and
the
three
hundred
men
who
were
with
him,
faint,
yet pursuing
.
So
Gideon
said to the men of Succoth, “
Please give my
troops
some
bread ,
for they are exhausted
, and I am still
pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. ”
He
said to the men of Succoth, Please give loaves
of
bread to
the
people
who
follow
me;
for they are faint
, and I am pursuing after
Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.
But
the leaders
of Succoth asked
, “
Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already
in your possession
, that we should give bread to your army? ”
The princes
of Succoth said
, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now
in your hand
, that we should give bread to your army?
“Very
well,”
Gideon replied
, “
when the
LORD
has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with the thorns and
briers
of the wilderness !”
Gideon said
, Therefore
when Yahweh
has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then
I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and
with
briers.
From
there
he went up to Penuel and asked
the
same
from
them ,
but
the men of Penuel gave
the
same
response
as the men of Succoth.
He went up there
to Penuel ,
and spoke
to
them in
like
manner;
and
the men of Penuel answered
him
as the men of Succoth had
answered
.
So
Gideon
told
the men of Penuel, “
When I return
in triumph
, I will tear
down this tower !”
He
spoke
also
to
the men of Penuel, saying,
When I come
again
in peace
, I will break
down this tower .
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with
their army
of
about fifteen thousand men —
all that
were left of the armies
of the people
of the east .
A
hundred and
twenty thousand swordsmen
had
already
fallen
.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor ,
and
their hosts
with
them,
about fifteen thousand men ,
all who
were left of all
the host
of the children
of the east ;
for
there
fell
one
hundred twenty thousand men
who
drew
sword
.
And
Gideon went up by way of the caravan
route
east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and he
attacked
their
army,
taking
them
by
surprise
.
Gideon went up by the
way of those
who
lived
in
tents
on
the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck
the
host;
for
the
host
was
secure
.
When
Zebah and Zalmunna fled ,
Gideon
pursued and captured
these
two kings of Midian, routing
their
entire
army
.
Zebah and Zalmunna fled ;
and
he
pursued after
them;
and he
took
the
two kings of Midian, Zebah
and
Zalmunna,
and
confused
all
the
host
.
After
this,
Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle along
the Ascent of Heres.
Gideon the
son of Joash returned from the battle from
the ascent of Heres.
There
he captured
a young man of Succoth and interrogated
him .
The
young
man
wrote
down
for him the names
of the seventy-seven leaders
and
elders
of
Succoth
.
He caught
a young man of the
men
of
Succoth ,
and inquired
of
him :
and
he
described
for him the princes
of Succoth,
and
the elders
of
it,
seventy-seven men
.
And
Gideon
went
to the men of Succoth and said, “Here
are
Zebah and Zalmunna, about
whom you taunted
me, saying, ‘
Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already
in your possession
, that we should give bread to your weary
men? ’”
He
came
to the men of Succoth ,
and said, See
Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning
whom you did
taunt
me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now
in your hand
, that we should give bread to your men who
are
weary
?
Then
he took the elders of the city, and using
the
thorns and
briers
of the wilderness, he disciplined
the men of Succoth.
He took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and
briers
, and
with
them
he taught
the men of Succoth.
He also
pulled
down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.
He broke
down the tower of Penuel ,
and killed the men of the city.
Next,
Gideon
asked
Zebah and Zalmunna, “
What kind
of men did
you kill
at Tabor? ”
“Men
like
you,”
they answered, “
each one resembling
the son
of a king. ”
Then
said
he
to
Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner
of men were
they
whom
you killed
at Tabor? They answered, As
you
are,
so
were
they;
each one resembled
the children
of a king.
“
They were my brothers, ”
Gideon
replied,
“
the sons of my mother !
As
surely
as the
LORD
lives, if you had let
them live
, I would not kill you. ”
He
said,
They were my brothers, the sons of my mother :
as Yahweh
lives, if you had saved
them alive
, I would not kill you.
So
he said to Jether ,
his firstborn, “Get
up and kill them. ”
But the young
man
did
not
draw his sword; he was
fearful
because he was still
a youth.
He said to Jether his firstborn, Up ,
and kill them. But the youth
didn't
draw his sword; for
he feared,
because he was yet
a youth.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get
up
and kill
us yourself,
for as the man is, so is his strength. ”
So
Gideon got
up
and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he
took the crescent
ornaments
from
the
necks
of
their camels.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise
you,
and fall
on
us ;
for as the man is, so is his strength. Gideon arose,
and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents
that
were
on
their camels '
necks
.
Then the Israelites
said to Gideon, “
Rule over us —
you and your son and grandson—
for you have saved us from
the hand of Midian. ”
Then the men
of
Israel
said to Gideon, Rule you
over us ,
both
you ,
and your son ,
and your
son's
son
also;
for you have saved us out
of
the hand of Midian.
But
Gideon replied
, “
I will not rule over you, nor
will
my son .
The
LORD
shall rule over you. ”
Gideon said
to
them
, I will not rule over you, neither
shall
my son rule
over
you:
Yahweh
shall rule over you.
Then
he
added
, “Let
me
make a request of you, that each
of
you give me an
earring
from
his plunder
. ”
(For the
enemies
had gold
earrings
because they were Ishmaelites.)
Gideon
said
to
them
, I
would
make a request of you, that you would
give me every
man
the
ear-rings
of
his spoil
. (For they
had golden
ear-rings,
because they were Ishmaelites.)
“
We will give them gladly,”
they
replied
. So
they spread out
a garment, and each
man threw
an
earring
from
his plunder
onto
it
.
They
answered,
We will willingly
give them. They spread a garment, and did
cast
therein
every
man the
ear-rings
of
his spoil
.
The weight of the gold
earrings
he had
requested was 1,700
shekels, in
addition
to
the crescent
ornaments
, the pendants, the purple garments
of
the kings of Midian, and the chains from
the
necks
of
their camels.
The weight of the golden
ear-rings
that
he requested was one
thousand
and
seven
hundred
[
shekels ]
of
gold
, besides
the crescents
, and
the pendants, and
the purple clothing
that
was
on
the kings of Midian, and besides
the chains that
were
about
their camels '
necks
.
From
all
this
Gideon made an ephod, which
he
placed
in Ophrah,
his hometown.
But
soon
all Israel prostituted
themselves
by
worshiping
it there ,
and it became a snare to Gideon and his household
.
Gideon made an ephod of
it
, and
put
it
in his city,
even
in
Ophrah:
and
all Israel played
the
prostitute
after
it there ;
and it became a snare to Gideon ,
and to
his house
.
In
this
way
Midian was subdued before the Israelites
and did
not
raise
its
head
again
. So
the land had rest for
forty years in the days of Gideon ,
So
Midian was subdued before the children
of
Israel,
and they
lifted
up
their
heads
no
more
. The land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon .
and
he—
Jerubbaal son of Joash —returned
home
and settled
down
.
Jerubbaal the
son of Joash went
and lived
in
his
own
house
.
Gideon had seventy sons of
his own,
since
he had many wives.
Gideon had seventy sons conceived
from
his body;
for
he had many wives.
His concubine ,
who dwelt
in Shechem, also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.
His concubine who was
in Shechem, she
also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.
Later,
Gideon son of Joash died at
a ripe
old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash
in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Gideon the
son of Joash died in
a good
old age ,
and was buried in the tomb of Joash
his father ,
in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
And
as soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites
turned and prostituted
themselves
with
the Baals, and they
set
up
Baal -
berith as
their god.
It
happened,
as soon as Gideon was dead, that
the children
of
Israel
turned again,
and played
the prostitute
after
the
Baals, and made
Baal Berith their god.
The Israelites
failed
to
remember the
LORD
their God who had delivered them from
the hands
of all their enemies on every side .
The children
of
Israel
didn't
remember Yahweh
their God ,
who had delivered them out
of
the hand
of all their enemies on every side ;
They did
not
show
kindness to the house of Jerubbaal (that
is
, Gideon )
for
all the good
things
he had done
for
Israel.
neither
shown
they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who
is]
Gideon ,
according
to
all the goodness
which
he had shown
to
Israel.
