Now it
happened,
when
Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how
Joshua had taken
Ai ,
and had
utterly
destroyed
it ;
as
he
had
done
to Jericho
and her
king ,
so
he had done to Ai
and her
king ;
and how
the inhabitants
of Gibeon had made peace with Israel ,
and were among
them ;
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that
Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted
it to destruction
—doing
to
Ai
and its
king as
he had done to Jericho
and its
king —
and that
the people
of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living
near
them .
that
they
feared
greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as
one of the royal cities ,
and
because
it was greater
than Ai, and all the
men of
it
were mighty.
So
Adoni-zedek
and
his
people
were
greatly alarmed
, because Gibeon was a great city, like
one of the royal cities ;
it was larger
than Ai, and all its
men were mighty.
Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and
to
Piram king of Jarmuth, and
to
Japhia king of Lachish, and to
Debir king of Eglon, saying,
Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word
to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,
Come up to
me,
and help me ,
and
let
us
strike
Gibeon ;
for
it
has
made peace with Joshua and with
the children
of
Israel
.
“
Come up and help me .
We
will
attack
Gibeon ,
because
they
have
made peace with Joshua and the Israelites
. ”
Therefore
the five kings of the Amorites ,
the king
of Jerusalem, the
king
of
Hebron, the
king
of
Jarmuth, the
king
of
Lachish, the
king
of
Eglon,
gathered
themselves
together,
and went
up,
they
and all their hosts,
and
encamped
against
Gibeon ,
and made war against it.
So
the five kings of the Amorites —
the kings
of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—joined
forces
and advanced
with
all their armies.
They
camped
before
Gibeon and made war against it.
The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to
the camp to
Gilgal ,
saying,
Don't
slack
your
hand
from
your servants ;
come up
to
us
quickly ,
and save us ,
and
help us :
for
all the kings of the Amorites that
dwell
in
the hill -
country are
gathered
together
against us.
Then
the men of Gibeon sent word
to Joshua in
the camp at
Gilgal :
“Do
not
abandon
your servants .
Come quickly and save us !
Help us ,
because
all the kings of the Amorites from
the hill country have
joined
forces
against us. ”
So Joshua went
up
from
Gilgal,
he,
and all
the
people
of
war
with
him
, and
all the mighty men of valor.
So Joshua and his
whole
army
, including
all the mighty men of valor ,
came
from
Gilgal
.
Yahweh
said to Joshua, Don't
fear
them :
for I have delivered them into your hands;
there
shall
not a
man
of them stand before
you.
The
LORD
said to Joshua, “Do
not
be
afraid
of
them ,
for I have delivered them into your hand.
Not one
of them shall
stand against
you. ”
Joshua
therefore
came
on
them
suddenly;
[for]
he
went
up
from
Gilgal
all the
night.
After
marching
all night from
Gilgal,
Joshua
caught
them
by
surprise
.
Yahweh
confused
them before Israel, and
he
killed
them with
a great slaughter at Gibeon, and
chased
them by
the
way
of
the ascent of
Beth Horon, and struck them to
Azekah ,
and to
Makkedah.
And
the
LORD
threw
them into
confusion
before Israel, who
defeated
them in
a great slaughter at Gibeon, pursued
them along
the ascent to
Beth -
horon, and struck them down
as
far
as
Azekah and Makkedah.
It
happened,
as they fled from
before Israel ,
while
they
were
at
the descent of
Beth Horon, that
Yahweh
cast down great
stones
from the sky on
them
to
Azekah
, and they
died:
they
were
more who
died
with
the hailstones than they
whom
the children
of Israel
killed
with
the sword
.
As they fled before Israel along
the descent from
Beth -
horon to
Azekah
, the
LORD
cast down on
them
large
hailstones
from the sky, and more of
them
were
killed
by
the hailstones than by
the swords
of the Israelites
.
Then
spoke
Joshua
to
Yahweh
in
the day when
Yahweh
delivered
up
the Amorites before
the children
of
Israel;
and
he
said
in the sight
of Israel ,
Sun, stand you
still on
Gibeon ;
You
, Moon, in
the valley of Aijalon.
On
the day that
the LORD
gave
the
Amorites over
to
the Israelites,
Joshua
spoke
to
the
LORD
in the presence
of Israel :
“O
sun, stand still over
Gibeon, O
moon, over
the Valley of Aijalon. ”
The sun stood still ,
and the moon stayed,
Until the nation had
avenged
themselves
of
their
enemies. Isn't
this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed
in the midst
of the sky ,
and didn't
hurry
to
go
down about a whole
day.
So
the sun stood still and the moon stopped
until the nation took
vengeance
upon
its
enemies. Is
this not
written in the Book of Jashar? “So
the sun stopped
in the middle
of the sky and delayed
going
down about a full
day. ”
There was
no day like that
before
it or after
it
, that
Yahweh
listened to the voice of a man :
for
Yahweh
fought for Israel.
There has
been
no day like it before
or since
, when
the
LORD
listened to the voice of a man ,
because
the
LORD
fought for Israel.
Joshua returned ,
and
all Israel with
him,
to the camp to
Gilgal.
Then
Joshua returned with
all Israel to the camp at
Gilgal.
These
five kings fled ,
and hid
themselves
in the cave at Makkedah.
Now
the
five kings had
fled and hidden
in the cave at Makkedah.
It
was
told
Joshua ,
saying,
The five kings are
found ,
hidden
in the cave at Makkedah.
And
Joshua was
informed:
“
The five kings have
been
found ;
they
are
hiding
in the cave at Makkedah. ”
Joshua said, Roll great
stones to
the mouth of the cave, and set
men by
it
to keep
them :
So
Joshua said, “
Roll large
stones against
the mouth of the cave, and post
men there
to guard
them .
but don't
stay;
pursue after
your enemies ,
and strike
the
hindmost
of
them ;
don't
allow
them to
enter
into
their cities :
for Yahweh
your God has delivered them into your hand.
But you,
do
not
stop
there.
Pursue your enemies and attack
them from
behind.
Do
not
let
them reach
their cities ,
for the
LORD
your God has delivered them into your hand. ”
It
happened,
when
Joshua and the children
of
Israel
had
made
an
end
of
killing
them
with
a very
great
slaughter ,
until they were
consumed
, and the remnant
which
remained
of
them
had
entered
into
the fortified cities ,
So
Joshua and the Israelites
continued
to
inflict
a terrible
slaughter until they had
finished
them
off
, and the remaining
survivors
retreated
to
the fortified cities .
that
all
the people
returned to the camp to
Joshua
at Makkedah in
peace:
none
moved
his
tongue
against any
of
the children
of
Israel
.
The whole
army
returned safely
to Joshua
in
the camp at Makkedah ,
and
no
one
dared
to
utter
a
word
against the Israelites
.
Then said
Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave ,
and bring forth
those five kings to me out
of
the
cave
.
Then Joshua said
, “
Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out
to me. ”
They
did
so ,
and
brought forth
those
five kings to
him
out of the cave ,
the king
of Jerusalem, the
king
of
Hebron, the
king
of
Jarmuth, the
king
of
Lachish, the
king
of
Eglon.
So they
brought the
five kings out of the cave —
the kings
of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and
Eglon.
It
happened,
when they brought forth
those
kings to Joshua, that
Joshua
called
for
all the men of Israel ,
and said to the chiefs
of
the
men
of
war
who went
with
him, Come near,
put your feet on the necks of these kings. They
came near,
and put their feet on the
necks of
them
.
When they had
brought the
kings to Joshua, he
summoned
all the men of Israel and said to the army
commanders
who had
accompanied
him, “
Come here
and
put your feet on the necks of these kings. ”
So
the
commanders
came forward
and put their feet on their
necks.
Joshua
said
to
them,
Don't
be afraid, nor
be
dismayed;
be strong and of
good
courage:
for thus
shall
Yahweh
do to all your
enemies against
whom
you fight.
“Do
not
be afraid or
discouraged
, ”
Joshua
said.
“
Be strong and courageous,
for the
LORD
will
do this
to all the
enemies you fight. ”
Afterward
Joshua struck them,
and put
them
to
death
, and hanged
them
on five trees :
and they
were
hanging
on
the
trees
until the
evening.
After
this,
Joshua struck down
and killed
the
kings
, and he
hung
their
bodies
on five trees and left
them
there
until evening.
It
happened
at the
time
of
the
going
down
of
the
sun,
that
Joshua commanded,
and
they took
them
down off
the trees ,
and cast
them
into the cave in which they had hidden themselves,
and
laid
great
stones on
the mouth of the cave, to this very
day.
At sunset
Joshua ordered
that
they be
taken
down from
the trees and thrown
into the cave in which they had hidden .
Then
large
stones were
placed
against
the mouth of the cave, and
the
stones
are
there
to this day.
Joshua
took
Makkedah
on that day ,
and struck
it with
the
edge
of
the sword, and
the
king of
it:
he utterly
destroyed
them
and
all
the souls
who
were
therein;
he
left
none
remaining;
and
he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
On that day Joshua
captured
Makkedah
and put
it to
the sword, along
with
its
king .
He devoted
to
destruction
everyone
in
the city,
leaving
no
survivors.
So
he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Joshua passed
from
Makkedah,
and all Israel with him ,
to Libnah ,
and fought against Libnah :
Then
Joshua and all Israel with him moved
on
from
Makkedah
to Libnah and fought against Libnah .
and Yahweh
delivered
it
also ,
and the
king of
it,
into the hand of Israel ;
and he
struck
it
with
the edge
of
the sword, and
all
the
souls
who
were
therein;
he
left
none
remaining
in
it;
and he did to the king of it
as he had done to the king of Jericho.
And the
LORD
also delivered
that
city
and its
king into the hand of Israel ,
and Joshua
put
all
the people
to
the sword, leaving
no
survivors.
And he did to the king of Libnah
as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Joshua passed
from
Libnah,
and all Israel with him ,
to Lachish ,
and
encamped
against
it ,
and fought against it :
And
Joshua and all Israel with him moved
on
from
Libnah
to Lachish .
They
laid
siege
to
it and fought against it .
and Yahweh
delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel ;
and he
took
it on the second day ,
and
struck
it
with
the edge
of
the sword, and
all
the
souls
who
were
therein,
according
to
all
that
he had done to Libnah.
And the
LORD
delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel ,
and Joshua
captured
it on the second day .
He
put
all
the people
to
the sword, just
as
he had done to Libnah.
Then
Horam king of Gezer came
up
to help Lachish ;
and
Joshua struck him and
his people, until
he
had
left
him
none
remaining
.
At
that
time
Horam king of Gezer went
to help Lachish ,
but
Joshua struck him down
along
with
his people, leaving
no
survivors
.
Joshua passed
from Lachish, and all Israel with him ,
to
Eglon;
and
they encamped
against
it ,
and fought against it ;
So
Joshua moved
on
from Lachish to
Eglon
, and all Israel with him .
They laid
siege
to
it and fought against it .
and
they
took
it
on
that day ,
and struck
it with
the
edge
of
the sword ;
and all
the souls
who
were
therein
he
utterly
destroyed
that
day
, according
to
all
that
he had done to Lachish.
That day they
captured
Eglon
and put
it to
the sword ,
and Joshua
devoted
to
destruction
everyone
in
the city
, just
as
he had done to Lachish.
Joshua went
up
from
Eglon,
and all Israel with him ,
to Hebron ;
and they
fought against it :
Then
Joshua and all Israel with him went
up
from
Eglon
to Hebron and fought against it .
and
they took
it ,
and struck
it
with
the
edge
of
the sword ,
and
the
king of
it
, and
all the
cities
of
it
, and all the souls
who
were
therein;
he
left none
remaining
, according
to
all
that
he had done to
Eglon; but
he utterly
destroyed
it,
and all
the
souls
who
were
therein
.
They captured
it and put
to
the sword its
king, all its
villages
, and all the people.
Joshua
left no
survivors
, just
as
he had done at
Eglon; he devoted
to
destruction
Hebron
and everyone
in
it
.
Joshua returned,
and all Israel with him ,
to
Debir ,
and fought against it :
Finally
Joshua and all Israel with him turned
toward
Debir and fought against it .
and he
took
it
, and
the
king of
it
, and all the
cities
of
it;
and
they struck
them with
the
edge
of
the sword ,
and utterly
destroyed
all
the souls
who
were
therein;
he
left
none
remaining:
as he had done to Hebron ,
so
he
did
to
Debir,
and to
the
king
of
it;
as he had done also
to Libnah ,
and to
the
king of
it
.
And they
captured
Debir
, its
king, and all its
villages.
They put
them to
the sword and devoted
to
destruction
everyone
in
the city,
leaving
no
survivors.
Joshua
did
to
Debir
and
its
king
as he had done to Hebron and as he had done to Libnah and its
king.
So Joshua struck
all
the land,
the hill -
country, and
the South
, and
the lowland
, and the slopes, and
all their kings :
he
left
none
remaining,
but
he utterly
destroyed
all
that breathed, as Yahweh
, the God of Israel, commanded.
So Joshua conquered
the whole
region—
the hill country, the Negev
, the foothills
, and the slopes, together
with
all their kings —leaving
no
survivors.
He devoted
to
destruction
everything
that breathed, just
as the
LORD
, the God of Israel, had
commanded.
Joshua struck
them
from Kadesh-barnea even
to Gaza, and all
the country
of Goshen ,
even
to
Gibeon.
Joshua conquered
the
area
from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and the whole
region
of Goshen as
far
as
Gibeon.
All
these
kings
and their
land
did
Joshua
take
at
one
time,
because Yahweh
, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
And because the
LORD
, the God of Israel, fought for Israel ,
Joshua
captured
all
these
kings
and
their
land
in
one
campaign
.
Joshua returned ,
and
all Israel with
him,
to the camp to
Gilgal.
Then
Joshua returned with
all Israel to the camp at
Gilgal.
