YLT
Young's Literal Translation
When Jesus
realized
that the Pharisees were
aware
He
was
gaining
and
baptizing
more disciples than John
When therefore
the
Lord
knew
that the Pharisees heard
that
Jesus
more disciples doth
make
and
baptize
than John ,
( although
it
was not Jesus
who
baptized
, but His disciples )
,
( though
indeed
Jesus
himself
was not baptizing
, but his disciples, )
He left Judea and returned
to Galilee .
he left Judea and went
away
again
to Galilee ,
Now
He
had
to pass
through Samaria.
and
it
was
behoving
him
to go
through Samaria.
So
He came
to a town
of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot
of
ground
that Jacob had
given
to his son Joseph.
He cometh,
therefore,
to a city
of Samaria ,
called Sychar, near to
the place
that Jacob gave
to Joseph
his son ;
Since
Jacob’s
well
was there ,
Jesus ,
weary from His
journey
, sat
down
by
the well .
It was about
the sixth hour .
and
there
was there a
well
of
Jacob.
Jesus therefore
having
been
weary from the
journeying
, was
sitting
thus
on
the well ;
it was as
it
were
the sixth hour ;
When
a Samaritan
woman came
to draw water ,
Jesus said
to her, “
Give Me a
drink .”
there
cometh
a woman out
of
Samaria
to draw water .
Jesus saith
to her, `
Give me to
drink ;'
(
His disciples had
gone into
the
town
to buy food.)
for
his disciples were
gone away
to the
city,
that
they
may
buy victuals;
“You
are
a
Jew,”
said
the woman .
“
How can
You
ask
for
a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? ”
(
For Jews do
not
associate
with Samaritans. )
the Samaritan
woman therefore
saith
to
him,
`
How dost
thou,
being
a Jew,
ask
drink from me, being
a Samaritan woman? '
for Jews have
no
dealing
with Samaritans.
Jesus answered, “
If you
knew
the gift of God and who is asking
you
for
a
drink, you
would
have asked Him, and He would have given you
living water. ”
Jesus answered and
said
to
her
, `
If thou
hadst
known
the gift of God ,
and who it
is who
is
saying
to
thee,
Give
me
to
drink, thou
wouldest
have asked him, and he would have given thee
living water. '
“Sir,”
the woman replied
, “You
have
nothing
to draw with and the well is deep .
Where
then will
You
get
this
living water?
The woman saith
to
him
, `Sir,
thou
hast
not
even
a
vessel
to draw with ,
and the well is deep ;
whence,
then ,
hast
thou
the
living water?
Are
You
greater than our father Jacob, who gave
us this
well and drank
from
it
himself ,
as
did his sons and his livestock
? ”
Art
thou
greater than our father Jacob, who did
give
us the
well ,
and himself out
of
it
did drink,
and
his sons ,
and his cattle
? '
Jesus said to her, “Everyone
who drinks
this water will
be
thirsty
again .
Jesus answered
and
said to her, `Every
one
who is
drinking
of
this water shall
thirst
again ;
But whoever drinks
the water I give him will
never
thirst.
Indeed
, the water I give him will
become in him a fount
of water springing up to eternal
life. ”
but whoever may
drink
of
the water that
I will
give him, may
not
thirst
--
to
the age;
and
the
water that
I will
give him shall
become in him a well
of water ,
springing up to life age-during
. '
The woman said
to
Him, “
Sir, give me this water so
that I will
not get
thirsty
and
have
to
keep
coming
here
to draw water
. ”
The woman saith
unto
him, `
Sir, give me this water ,
that I may
not thirst,
nor
come
hither
to draw. '
Jesus told
her, “
Go, call your
husband and come back.”
Jesus saith
to
her, `
Go, call thy
husband ,
and come hither;'
“
I have no
husband ,”
the
woman
replied
. Jesus said
to her, “You
are
correct
to
say that
you
have
no
husband .
the
woman
answered
and
said,
`
I have not
a
husband. '
Jesus saith
to her, `Well
didst
thou
say --
A
husband I
have
not;
In
fact,
you
have
had
five husbands, and the
man
you
now have
is not your
husband .
You
have
spoken
truthfully
. ”
for
five husbands thou
hast
had
, and ,
now ,
he
whom
thou
hast
is not thy
husband ;
this
hast
thou
said
truly
. '
“Sir,”
the woman said
, “
I see
that You
are
a prophet .
The woman saith
to
him
, `Sir,
I perceive
that thou
art
a prophet ;
Our fathers worshiped
on
this mountain, but
you
Jews
say that the place where one
must
worship is
in
Jerusalem
. ”
our fathers in
this mountain did
worship
, and
ye
--
ye
say that in
Jerusalem
is
the place where it
behoveth
to
worship. '
“Believe
Me
, woman, ”
Jesus
replied
, “a
time
is
coming
when you
will
worship
the
Father
neither on
this mountain nor in Jerusalem .
Jesus
saith
to
her
, `
Woman, believe
me
, that
there
doth
come
an
hour,
when neither in
this mountain ,
nor in Jerusalem ,
shall
ye
worship
the
Father;
You
worship what you
do
not know
; we worship what we do
know
, for
salvation is from
the Jews .
ye
worship what ye
have
not known
; we worship what we have
known
, because
the
salvation is of
the Jews ;
But a
time
is
coming
and has
now come
when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and in
truth, for the Father is
seeking
such as
these
to worship Him .
but ,
there
cometh
an
hour,
and it
now is,
when the true worshippers
will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also
doth
seek
such to worship him ;
God is Spirit, and His
worshipers
must
worship
Him in spirit and in
truth. ”
God `
is '
a
Spirit, and those
worshipping
Him ,
in spirit and truth it
doth
behove
to
worship
. '
The woman said
, “
I know
that Messiah ”
(
called Christ )
“is
coming.
When He
comes
, He will explain
everything
to
us .”
The woman saith
to
him
, `
I have
known
that Messiah doth
come,
who
is
called Christ ,
when that
one
may
come
, he will tell
us all
things;'
Jesus answered
, “
I who
speak
to
you
am He. ”
Jesus saith
to
her
, `
I am `
he ',
who
am
speaking
to
thee
. '
Just
then
His disciples returned
and were surprised
that He
was
speaking
with a woman .
But
no one asked
Him
, “
What do
You
want
from
her
? ”
or “
Why are
You
talking
with her? ”
And
upon
this
came
his disciples ,
and were wondering
that with a woman he
was
speaking,
no one, however,
said,
`
What seekest
thou
? '
or `
Why speakest
thou
with her? '
Then
the woman left her water jar
, went back
into
the town
, and said
to the people
,
The woman then
left her water -jug
, and
went away
to
the city
, and saith
to the men
,
“
Come, see a man who told me everything
I ever
did .
Could
this be
the Christ? ”
`
Come, see a man ,
who told me all
things
--
as
many
as
I did ;
is
this the Christ? '
So
they left
the town
and made
their
way
toward
Jesus
.
They went
forth
therefore
out
of
the city,
and were
coming
unto
him
.
Meanwhile
the disciples urged
Him, “
Rabbi, eat something.”
And
in
the meanwhile
his
disciples were
asking
him, saying,
`
Rabbi, eat ;'
But
He told
them, “
I have food to eat that you
know
nothing
about
. ”
and
he said
to
them, `
I have food to eat that ye
have
not
known
. '
So
the disciples asked
one another, “Could
someone
have
brought
Him food
? ”
The disciples then
said
one to
another, `Did
any
one
bring
him anything
to
eat
? '
Jesus explained
, “
My food is to
do the will of Him who sent Me and to
finish His work .
Jesus saith
to
them
, `
My food is ,
that
I
may
do the will of Him who sent me ,
and may
finish His work ;
Do you
not say ,
‘There
are
still
four months until
the harvest ’?
I tell
you, lift up your eyes and look
at
the fields, for
they are ripe
for
harvest.
do not say that
it
is
yet
four months ,
and
the harvest cometh;
lo,
I say
to
you, Lift up your eyes ,
and see
the fields, that
they are white
unto
harvest already
.
Already
the
reaper
draws
his
wages
and gathers
a crop
for
eternal
life, so
that the
sower
and the
reaper
may rejoice together .
`
And he
who
is
reaping
doth
receive
a reward,
and
doth
gather
fruit
to
life age-during
, that both
he
who
is
sowing
and he
who
is
reaping
may rejoice together ;
For in this case
the saying ‘
One sows
and another reaps’
is
true
.
for in this the saying is
the
true
one ,
that
one
is
the
sower
and another the
reaper
.
I sent you to reap what
you
have not worked
for
; others have
done
the
hard
work
, and now
you
have
taken
up
their labor
. ”
I sent you to reap that
on
which
ye
have not laboured
; others laboured
, and ye
into
their labour
have
entered
.
Many
of
the
Samaritans
from that town
believed in Jesus
because of the woman’s
testimony
, “
He told me everything
I ever
did. ”
And
from that city
many
believed in him,
of
the
Samaritans,
because of the word
of
the
woman
testifying
, --
`
He told me all
things
--
as
many
as
I did. '
So
when the Samaritans came to
Him, they asked
Him to stay
with them, and He stayed
two days .
When ,
then,
the Samaritans came unto
him, they were
asking
him to remain
with them, and he remained
there
two days ;
And many more believed
because of His message.
and many more did
believe
because of his word,
They
said to the woman ,
“We
now
believe
not
only
because of your
words
; we have heard for
ourselves,
and we
know
that this man
truly
is the Savior
of the world. ”
and
said to the woman --
`No
more
because of thy
speaking
do
we
believe
; for
we ourselves
have heard and known
that this is truly
the Saviour
of the world --
the
Christ
. '
After two days, Jesus
left
for
Galilee .
And
after the
two days he
went
forth
thence
, and
went
away
to
Galilee ,
Now
He
Himself had
testified that a prophet has
no
honor
in his own hometown.
for
Jesus
himself testified that a prophet in his own country
shall
not
have
honour;
Yet
when He arrived
, the Galileans welcomed
Him .
They
had
seen all the
great
things He had
done
in Jerusalem at
the feast ,
for they had
gone
there
as
well
.
when then,
he came
to
Galilee
, the Galileans received
him ,
having
seen all things that
he did
in Jerusalem in
the feast --
for they also
went
to
the
feast
.
So
once
again
He
came to Cana in
Galilee, where He had
turned
the water into
wine .
And there was a royal
official
whose son lay
sick
at
Capernaum .
Jesus
came ,
therefore,
again
to Cana of
Galilee, where he made
the water wine ,
and there was a certain
courtier,
whose son was
ailing
in
Capernaum ,
When
he heard that Jesus had
come from
Judea to Galilee, he
went and begged
Him to
come down and heal his son, who
was about to die.
he ,
having
heard that Jesus is
come out
of
Judea to Galilee, went away
unto
him,
and was
asking
him that
he
may
come down and may
heal his son, for
he
was about to die.
Jesus said to
him, “Unless
you
people
see
signs and wonders, you
will never
believe. ”
Jesus then
said unto
him, `If
signs and wonders ye
may
not
see
, ye
will not
believe. '
“Sir,”
the official
said
, “
come down before my child dies.”
The courtier
saith
unto
him
, `Sir,
come down before my child die;'
“Go,”
said
Jesus .
“Your
son will
live. ”
The man took
Jesus
at
His
word and departed.
Jesus saith
to
him,
`Be
going
on;
thy
son doth
live. '
And
the man believed
the
word that
Jesus
said
to
him,
and was
going
on,
And while
he was
still
on
the
way
, his servants met him with
the
news
that
his
boy
was
alive.
and he now
going
down
, his servants met him ,
and
told,
saying
--
`Thy
child
doth
live;'
So
he inquired as
to
the hour when
his
son
had
recovered
, and they told
him,
“The
fever
left
him yesterday at the seventh hour .”
he inquired then
of
them
the hour in
which
he
became
better
, and they said
to
him --
`
Yesterday at the seventh hour the
fever
left
him;'
Then the father realized
that this
was the
very
hour in which Jesus had
told
him ,
“Your
son will
live .”
And he and all
his household
believed.
then the father knew
that `it
was '
in
that
hour in which Jesus said
to
him --
`Thy
son doth
live ,'
and he himself
believed,
and his whole
house;
This was
now
the
second sign that
Jesus performed
after
coming
from
Judea into
Galilee.
this again
a
second sign did
Jesus ,
having
come
out
of
Judea to
Galilee.
