“Do
you
know
when mountain
goats give
birth
? Have
you
watched
the doe
bear
her
fawn
?
Knowest
thou
the
time
when the
wild
goats of
the
rock
bring
forth
? `Or'
canst
thou
mark
when
the hinds
do
calve
?
Can
you
count
the months they are
pregnant
? Do
you
know
the time they give
birth
?
Canst
thou
number
the months that
they fulfil
? Or
knowest
thou
the time when
they bring
forth
?
They crouch
down
and
bring forth their young ;
they deliver
their newborn
.
They bow
themselves,
they
bring forth their young ,
They cast
out
their pains
.
Their young ones thrive
and
grow up in the open field; they leave
and do
not
return.
Their young ones become
strong,
they
grow up in the open field; They go
forth,
and return not
again
.
Who set
the wild donkey
free? Who released
the swift
donkey
from
the harness?
Who hath
sent
out
the wild ass
free? Or
who hath
loosed
the bonds
of
the swift
ass,
I made the wilderness his
home
and the salt flats
his dwelling .
Whose
home
I have
made the wilderness ,
And the salt land
his dwelling -place?
He scorns
the tumult of the city and
never
hears
the shouts
of a
driver.
He scorneth
the tumult of the city ,
Neither
heareth
he
the shoutings
of the
driver.
He
roams
the mountains for
pasture, searching
for
any
green thing.
The range
of
the
mountains is
his
pasture, And
he
searcheth
after
every
green thing.
Will the wild ox consent
to serve you
? Will he stay
by your
manger
at
night
?
Will the wild -
ox be
content
to serve thee
? Or
will he abide
by thy
crib
?
Can
you
hold
him
to
the furrow
with a
harness
? Will he plow
the valleys behind
you
?
Canst
thou
bind
the wild-ox
with his
band
in
the
furrow
? Or
will he harrow
the valleys after
thee
?
Can
you
rely
on
his great
strength? Will
you
leave your
hard
work
to him?
Wilt
thou
trust
him,
because
his strength is
great
? Or
wilt
thou
leave to him thy
labor
?
Can
you
trust
him to
bring in
your
grain
and gather it
to
your
threshing floor?
Wilt
thou
confide
in
him ,
that
he
will
bring home
thy
seed,
And gather `the
grain'
of
thy
threshing -
floor?
The wings of the ostrich flap
joyfully,
but cannot
match
the pinions and feathers
of the
stork.
The wings of the ostrich wave
proudly;
`
But '
are
they
the pinions and plumage
of love?
For she leaves
her eggs on the ground
and lets
them warm
in the sand.
For she leaveth
her eggs on the earth,
And warmeth
them in the dust,
She
forgets
that a
foot may crush them, or a
wild animal
may trample them.
And
forgetteth
that the
foot may crush them, Or that
the
wild beast
may trample them.
She treats
her young harshly
, as if not her
own,
with
no
concern
that
her labor was
in vain .
She dealeth
hardly
with
her young ones
, as if they
were
not hers:
Though
her labor be
in vain ,
`she
is'
without
fear;
For
God has
deprived her of wisdom ;
He has
not
endowed
her with
understanding.
Because
God hath
deprived her of wisdom ,
Neither
hath
he imparted
to
her understanding.
Yet
when
she proudly
spreads
her
wings
, she laughs
at
the horse and its
rider.
What
time
she lifteth
up
herself
on
high
, She scorneth
the horse and his
rider.
Do
you
give
strength
to
the horse or
adorn
his neck with a
mane?
Hast
thou
given
the horse `
his '
might?
Hast
thou
clothed
his
neck with the
quivering
mane?
Do
you
make
him leap like
a locust ,
striking
terror
with
his proud
snorting ?
Hast
thou
made
him to
leap as
a locust ?
The
glory
of
his snorting is
terrible.
He paws
in the valley and rejoices
in his strength ;
he charges
into
battle
.
He paweth
in the valley ,
and rejoiceth
in his strength :
He goeth
out
to
meet
the
armed
men
.
He laughs
at fear, frightened
of
nothing
; he does
not
turn
back from the sword.
He mocketh
at fear, and
is
not
dismayed
; Neither
turneth
he back from the sword.
A
quiver rattles
at
his
side
, along
with
a
flashing spear and lance
.
The
quiver rattleth
against
him
, The
flashing spear and the
javelin
.
Trembling
with
excitement,
he devours
the distance
; he cannot
stand
still
when
the ram’s
horn
sounds
.
He swalloweth
the ground
with
fierceness
and
rage
; Neither
believeth
he that
it
is
the voice
of
the
trumpet
.
At
the
blast
of
the horn,
he snorts
with
fervor.
He catches
the scent
of
battle from
afar —
the shouts
of captains and the cry
of
war
.
As
oft
as
the trumpet
`soundeth'
he saith,
Aha!
And
he smelleth
the battle afar off,
The thunder
of the
captains ,
and the shouting
.
Does
the hawk take
flight
by
your
understanding
and spread
his
wings toward the south?
Is
it
by
thy
wisdom
that
the hawk soareth,
(
And )
stretcheth
her
wings toward the south?
Does
the
eagle
soar
at your
command and make
his
nest on high?
Is
it
at thy
command that
the
eagle
mounteth
up,
And maketh
her
nest on high?
He
dwells
on a
cliff and lodges
there;
his
stronghold is
on
a
rocky
crag
.
On the
cliff she
dwelleth,
and maketh
her
home,
Upon
the
point
of
the
cliff,
and
the
stronghold.
From there
he
spies
out food
; his
eyes see
it from
afar.
From thence
she
spieth
out the
prey
; Her
eyes behold
it afar off
.
His
young ones feast
on
blood ;
and where the slain are, there he
is. ”
Her
young ones also
suck
up
blood :
And where the slain are, there is she
.
