Nebuchadnezzar
king
of
Babylon
made
Zedekiah son of Josiah the
king of
Judah
, and
he
reigned
in
place
of Coniah son of Jehoiakim.
Zedekiah the
son of Josiah reigned
as
king, instead
of Coniah the
son of Jehoiakim ,
whom
Nebuchadrezzar
king
of
Babylon
made
king
in
the
land
of
Judah
.
But he and
his officers
and
the people of the land refused
to obey
the words that
the
LORD
had
spoken
through
Jeremiah
the prophet.
But neither
he ,
nor
his servants,
nor
the people of the land ,
did
listen
to the words of
Yahweh,
which
he
spoke
by
the prophet Jeremiah
.
Yet
King
Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the priest,
the
son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah
the prophet with
the
message
, “Please
pray to the
LORD
our God for us !”
Zedekiah the
king
sent Jehucal the
son of Shelemiah ,
and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the
priest,
to the prophet Jeremiah
, saying,
Pray now
to Yahweh
our God for us .
Now Jeremiah was
free
to
come
and go
among the people ,
for they had not yet
put him in
prison.
Now Jeremiah came
in
and went
out
among the people ;
for they had not put him into
prison.
Pharaoh’s
army had
left
Egypt ,
and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the
report
, they withdrew
from Jerusalem.
Pharaoh's
army was
come
forth
out
of
Egypt ;
and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news
of
them
, they broke
up
from Jerusalem.
Then the word of the
LORD
came
to Jeremiah
the prophet :
Then came
the word of Yahweh
to the prophet Jeremiah,
saying,
“This
is
what
the
LORD
, the God of Israel, says
that
you are
to
tell the king of Judah, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s
army, which has
marched
out
to help you, will
go
back
to its
own land of
Egypt
.
Thus
says
Yahweh
, the God of Israel, Thus
shall
you tell the king of Judah, who sent you to me to
inquire
of
me
: Behold, Pharaoh's
army, which is
come
forth
to help you, shall
return
to Egypt
into
their
own land.
Then
the Chaldeans will
return
and fight against this city .
They will
capture
it and burn it down
.
The Chaldeans shall
come
again,
and fight against this city ;
and
they shall
take
it ,
and burn it with
fire
.
This
is
what
the
LORD
says :
Do
not
deceive yourselves by
saying, ‘
The Chaldeans will
go
away
for
good,’
for they will
not !
Thus
says Yahweh,
Don't
deceive yourselves ,
saying, The Chaldeans shall
surely
depart
from
us;
for they shall
not depart.
Indeed,
if
you were
to
strike
down
the entire
army of the Chaldeans that
is
fighting
against you, and only
wounded men remained
in
their
tents
, they
would still
get
up and burn this city down
. ”
For
though
you had
struck
the whole
army of the Chaldeans who
fight
against you, and there
remained
but
wounded men among
them
, yes
would they
rise
up every
man
in
his
tent,
and burn this city with
fire
.
When the Chaldean
army withdrew
from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s
army,
It
happened
that,
when the army of
the
Chaldeans
was
broken
up
from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's
army,
Jeremiah started
to
leave
Jerusalem to go to
the land of Benjamin to claim
his portion there among
the people.
then
Jeremiah went
forth
out
of
Jerusalem to go into
the land of Benjamin ,
to receive
his portion there ,
in
the midst
of
the
people.
But
when he reached
the Gate of Benjamin, the
captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah ,
seized
him
and said
, “
You are deserting
to the Chaldeans !”
When he was
in
the gate of Benjamin, a
captain of the guard was
there
, whose name was Irijah ,
the
son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah ;
and he
laid
hold
on
Jeremiah
the
prophet
, saying,
You are falling
away
to the Chaldeans .
“That
is
a
lie,”
Jeremiah replied.
“
I am not deserting
to the Chaldeans !”
But Irijah
would
not
listen to him; instead,
he
arrested
Jeremiah and took
him to the officials
.
Then
said
Jeremiah ,
It
is
false;
I am not falling
away
to the Chaldeans .
But he
didn't
listen to him; so
Irijah
laid
hold
on
Jeremiah ,
and brought
him to the princes
.
The officials
were angry with Jeremiah, and they
beat
him and placed
him in jail
in the house of Jonathan the scribe ,
for it
had been
made into
a
prison.
The princes
were angry with Jeremiah, and struck
him ,
and put
him in prison
in the house of Jonathan the scribe ;
for they
had made that
the
prison.
So
Jeremiah went
into a
cell
in
the dungeon and remained there a
long
time.
When
Jeremiah was
come
into the dungeon -house,
and into
the
cells,
and
Jeremiah
had
remained there many
days;
Later,
King
Zedekiah sent for
Jeremiah
and received
him in his palace
, where
he
asked
him
privately
, “
Is there a
word from the
LORD
? ”
“
There is ,”
Jeremiah
replied
. “
You will
be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. ”
Then
Zedekiah the
king
sent ,
and fetched
him :
and
the
king
asked
him
secretly
in his house
, and
said
, Is there any
word from Yahweh
? Jeremiah
said,
There is. He
said
also,
You shall
be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
Then
Jeremiah asked
King Zedekiah, “How
have I sinned against you or your servants or these
people, that you have put me in prison?
Moreover
Jeremiah said
to
king Zedekiah, Wherein
have I sinned against you ,
or against
your servants ,
or against
this
people, that you have put me in prison?
Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming
, ‘
The king of Babylon will
not come against you or
this land ’
?
Where now
are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying
, The king of Babylon shall
not come against you ,
nor
against
this land?
But
now please listen
, O
my lord the king .
May
my petition
come
before you .
Do
not send
me back
to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or
I will
die there. ”
Now please hear
, my lord the king :
please
let
my supplication
be
presented
before you ,
that
you
not cause
me to return
to
the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest
I die there.
So
King
Zedekiah gave
orders
for
Jeremiah to
be
placed
in
the courtyard
of the guard and given
a loaf of bread daily
from
the
street
of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone
. So
Jeremiah remained in the courtyard
of the guard.
Then
Zedekiah the
king
commanded,
and
they
committed
Jeremiah into
the court
of the guard ;
and they
gave
him
daily
a loaf of bread out
of the bakers '
street
, until all the bread in the city was spent
. Thus
Jeremiah remained in the court
of the guard.
