The word which
came unto
Jeremiah from Jehovah
in the days of Jehoiakim the
son of Josiah ,
king of Judah ,
saying,
This
is
the word that
came to
Jeremiah from the
LORD
in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah :
Go unto
the house of the Rechabites, and
speak unto
them, and bring them into
the
house
of
Jehovah,
into
one of the chambers ,
and
give
them
wine
to drink.
“
Go to
the house of the Rechabites, speak to
them, and bring them to
one of the chambers of
the
house
of
the
LORD
to offer
them
a
drink of
wine
. ”
Then
I took Jaazaniah the
son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brethren,
and all his sons ,
and
the whole
house of the Rechabites ;
So
I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers
and all his sons —
the entire
house of the Rechabites —
and I brought them into the house of Jehovah,
into
the chamber of
the sons of Hanan the
son of Igdaliah, the
man of God ,
which
was by
the chamber of the princes
, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the
son of Shallum ,
the keeper
of
the
threshold
.
and I brought them into the house of the LORD,
to
a
chamber occupied
by
the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a
man of God .
This
room
was near
the chamber of the officials
, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper
.
And
I set before the sons
of the house of the Rechabites bowls
full
of
wine
, and cups;
and
I said unto
them, Drink ye
wine.
Then
I set pitchers
full
of
wine
and
some
cups
before the men
of the house of the Rechabites, and I said to
them, “
Drink some
wine. ”
But
they
said,
We will
drink no
wine ;
for Jonadab the
son of Rechab ,
our
father,
commanded us, saying,
Ye
shall
drink
no
wine,
neither ye,
nor your sons,
for
ever :
“
We do
not
drink wine ,”
they
replied,
“
for our
forefather
Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us, ‘
Neither you
nor your descendants
are
ever to
drink
wine.
neither
shall
ye
build house ,
nor
sow seed ,
nor
plant vineyard, nor
have
any;
but
all
your
days
ye
shall
dwell
in tents ;
that ye
may live many
days
in the land wherein
ye
sojourn
.
Nor
are
you
ever
to
build a
house or
sow seed or
plant a
vineyard .
Those
things
are
not
for
you.
Instead
, you
must
live
in tents all
your
lives,
so
that you
may live a
long
time
in the land where
you
wander
. ’
And we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the
son of Rechab ,
our
father,
in all that
he charged
us ,
to
drink
no
wine all our days,
we ,
our wives ,
our sons ,
or
our
daughters ;
And we have obeyed the voice of our
forefather
Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded
us .
So
we
have
not
drunk
wine all our lives—neither
we nor
our wives nor
our sons and
daughters .
nor to
build
houses
for
us
to
dwell
in;
neither
have we vineyard,
nor
field
, nor
seed:
Nor have we built
houses
in
which
to
live
, and
we
have
not
owned
any
vineyards
or
fields
or
crops.
but we have dwelt
in tents ,
and have obeyed ,
and done according
to
all
that
Jonadab
our father
commanded us.
But we have lived
in tents and have obeyed and done exactly
as
our forefather
Jonadab
commanded us.
But
it
came
to
pass,
when Nebuchadrezzar
king of Babylon came
up
into the land, that
we said ,
Come, and
let us go to
Jerusalem for
fear
of
the army
of the Chaldeans ,
and for
fear
of
the army
of
the
Syrians;
so we dwell
at
Jerusalem.
So
when Nebuchadnezzar
king of Babylon marched
into the land, we said :
‘
Come, let us go into
Jerusalem to
escape
the armies
of the Chaldeans and the Arameans.’
So we have
remained
in
Jerusalem. ”
Then came
the word of Jehovah
unto
Jeremiah ,
saying,
Then the word of the
LORD
came
to
Jeremiah :
Thus
saith
Jehovah
of hosts, the God of Israel: Go ,
and say
to
the men of Judah and the inhabitants
of Jerusalem ,
Will ye
not receive
instruction
to
hearken
to
my words? saith
Jehovah
.
“This
is
what
the
LORD
of Hosts, the God of Israel ,
says
: Go and tell
the men of Judah and the residents
of Jerusalem :
‘
Will you
not accept
discipline
and
obey
My words? ’
declares
the
LORD
.
The words of Jonadab the
son of Rechab ,
that
he commanded his sons ,
not to drink wine, are
performed;
and unto
this day they
drink
none,
for
they obey
their father's
commandment:
but I have spoken unto
you ,
rising
up
early
and speaking;
and ye
have not hearkened
unto
me .
The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have
been
carried
out.
He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they
have
not
drunk
it
to
this very
day because
they have
obeyed
the
command
of
their forefather.
But I have spoken to
you again
and again,
and you
have not obeyed
Me !
I have sent also
unto
you all my servants the prophets, rising
up
early
and
sending
them
, saying
, Return
ye
now
every
man
from his
evil
way,
and
amend
your doings
, and go
not after other gods to serve them ,
and
ye
shall
dwell
in the land which
I have given to you and to
your fathers :
but ye
have not inclined your ear ,
nor
hearkened
unto
me.
Again
and
again
I have sent you all My servants the prophets, proclaiming:
‘Turn
now
, each
of
you
, from your wicked
ways
, and correct
your
actions.
Do
not go
after other gods to serve them .
Live
in the land that
I have given to you and your fathers .’
But you
have not inclined your ear or
listened
to
Me.
Forasmuch
as
the sons of Jonadab the
son of Rechab have
performed
the commandment
of
their father
which
he
commanded
them, but this
people hath
not hearkened
unto
me ;
Yes,
the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab carried
out
the command
their forefather
gave
them, but these
people have
not listened
to
Me .
therefore thus
saith
Jehovah,
the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring upon
Judah and upon
all the inhabitants
of Jerusalem all the evil
that
I have pronounced against them ;
because I have spoken unto
them ,
but they have not heard;
and I have called unto
them ,
but they have not answered.
Therefore this
is
what
the LORD
God of Hosts, the God of Israel ,
says
: ‘
Behold, I will bring to
Judah and to
all the residents
of Jerusalem all the disaster
I have pronounced against them ,
because I have spoken to
them but they have not obeyed,
and I have called to
them but they have not answered. ’”
And
Jeremiah said unto
the house of the Rechabites ,
Thus
saith
Jehovah
of hosts, the God of Israel: Because ye
have obeyed the commandment
of Jonadab
your father,
and kept all his precepts,
and done according
unto
all that he commanded
you ;
Then
Jeremiah said to
the house of the Rechabites :
“This
is
what
the
LORD
of Hosts, the God of Israel ,
says
: ‘
Because you
have obeyed the command
of your forefather
Jonadab
and have
kept all his commandments
and have
done all that he charged
you to
do,
therefore
thus
saith
Jehovah
of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the
son of Rechab shall
not
want
a man to stand before me for
ever
.
this
is
what
the
LORD
of Hosts, the God of Israel ,
says
: Jonadab son of Rechab will
never
fail
to
have
a man to stand before Me. ’”
