The word of Yahweh
that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought .
This
is
the word of the
LORD
that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought :
Judah mourns ,
and the
gates of
it
languish ,
they
sit
in
black
on
the ground;
and the
cry of
Jerusalem
is
gone
up.
“
Judah mourns and her
gates languish .
Her
people
wail
for
the land,
and a
cry goes
up from
Jerusalem
.
Their
nobles send their little
ones
to
the
waters:
they come
to the cisterns, and
find no water; they
return
with
their vessels
empty ;
they are disappointed
and
confounded,
and cover their heads.
The
nobles send their servants
for
water;
they go
to the cisterns, but
find no water; their jars
return
empty .
They are ashamed
and humiliated;
they
cover their heads.
Because
of
the ground which
is cracked ,
because no rain has been
in
the land ,
the plowmen
are disappointed,
they cover their heads.
The ground is cracked because no rain has fallen
on
the land .
The farmers
are ashamed;
they cover their heads.
Yes,
the hind
also
in the field calves,
and
forsakes
[
her young],
because there is no grass.
Even
the doe
in the field deserts
her newborn
fawn
because there is no grass.
The
wild donkeys stand on the
bare
heights ,
they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail ,
because
there
is
no
herbage
.

. ”
Though
our iniquities testify against us, work
you
for your
name's
sake, Yahweh;
for
our backslidings
are many; we have sinned against you.
Although
our iniquities testify against us, O
LORD,
act
for the
sake of
Your
name.
Indeed
, our rebellions
are many; we have sinned against You.
You
hope of Israel, the
Savior of
it
in the
time
of trouble
, why should
you be
as
a foreigner
in the land, and
as
a wayfaring
man
who turns
aside
to
stay
for
a night?
O
Hope of Israel, its
Savior in times
of distress
, why are
You like
a stranger
in the land, like
a traveler
who stays
but
a night?
Why should
you be
like a scared
man, as
a mighty
man
who
can't
save? yet you ,
Yahweh,
are in
the
midst
of
us, and we are called by your name ;
don't
leave
us
.
Why are
You like a man taken
by
surprise
, like
a warrior
powerless
to
save? Yet You are among
us, O
LORD,
and we are called by Your name. Do
not
forsake
us!
Thus
says Yahweh
to
this people ,
Even
so
have
they loved
to wander; they have not refrained
their feet :
therefore
Yahweh
does not accept them; now
will
he remember their iniquity,
and visit
their sins.
This
is
what
the
LORD
says about
this people :
“Truly
they love
to wander; they have not restrained
their feet .
So
the
LORD
does not accept them; He will
now
remember their guilt
and call
their sins to
account
. ”
Yahweh
said to me, Don't
pray for this people for
[their]
good
.
Then
the
LORD
said to me, “Do
not
pray for the
well-being
of
this people.
When
they fast, I will not hear
their cry; and
when
they offer burnt offering
and meal-offering
, I will not accept them ;
but
I will consume
them by the
sword ,
and by
the
famine ,
and by
the
pestilence
.
Although
they may
fast, I will not listen
to
their cry; although
they may
offer burnt offerings
and grain
offerings
, I will not accept them .
Instead,
I will finish
them off
by sword and famine and plague
. ”
Then
said
I,
Ah, Lord Yahweh
! behold
, the prophets tell
them, You shall
not see the sword ,
neither
shall
you
have
famine ;
but I will give you assured
peace in this place.
“
Ah, Lord GOD
! ”
I
replied
, “Look,
the prophets are
telling
them, ‘
You will
not see the sword or
suffer
famine ,
but I will give you lasting
peace in this place. ’”
Then
Yahweh
said
to
me,
The prophets prophesy
lies in my name ;
I didn't
send them ,
neither
have
I
commanded
them ,
neither
spoke
I
to them :
they prophesy
to you a lying
vision, and
divination,
and
a thing
of
nothing
, and
the deceit
of their own heart
.
“
The prophets are
prophesying
lies in My name ,”
replied
the
LORD.
“
I did
not
send them or
appoint
them or
speak
to them .
They are
prophesying
to you a false
vision, a worthless
divination
, the futility
and
delusion
of their own minds
.
Therefore thus
says Yahweh
concerning
the prophets who prophesy in my name ,
and
I didn't
send them, yet they say, Sword and
famine shall
not
be
in
this land :
By sword and famine shall
those
prophets be
consumed.
Therefore this
is
what
the
LORD
says about
the prophets who prophesy in My name :
I did
not
send them, yet they say, ‘No
sword or
famine will
touch
this land .’
By sword and famine these
very
prophets will
meet
their
end!
The people to whom they prophesy shall
be cast
out
in
the streets of Jerusalem because of the
famine and the
sword ;
and
they
shall
have
none
to bury them -them,
their wives, nor
their sons ,
nor
their daughters :
for
I will pour their wickedness
on
them.
And
the people to whom they prophesy will
be thrown
into
the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword .
There
will
be
no
one
to bury them or
their wives, their sons or
their daughters .
I will pour out
their own
evil
upon
them.
You shall
say
this word to them ,
Let
my eyes run
down
with tears night
and
day ,
and let
them
not cease ;
for the virgin daughter of my people is
broken
with
a great
breach
, with
a very
grievous wound.
You are
to
speak
this word to them :
‘
My eyes overflow
with tears ;
day and night
they
do
not cease ,
for the virgin daughter of my people has
been
shattered
by
a crushing
blow
, a severely
grievous wound.
If I go forth
into
the field,
then,
behold
, the
slain with
the sword !
and
if I enter into
the city, then,
behold,
those who
are
sick
with
famine! for both the
prophet and the
priest go
about
in
the
land ,
and
have
no
knowledge
.
If I go out
to
the country
, I
see
those
slain by
the sword ;
if I enter the city, I
see
those ravaged
by
famine! For both prophet and priest travel
to
a
land they
do
not
know
. ’”
Have you utterly
rejected Judah? has
your
soul
loathed
Zion? why have you struck
us ,
and
there
is
no
healing for
us
? We looked
for peace, but no good came;
and for a
time of healing, and,
behold,
dismay!
Have You rejected Judah completely
? Do
You
despise
Zion? Why have You stricken
us so
that
we
are
beyond
healing? We hoped
for peace, but no good has
come,
and for the
time of healing, but
there
was
only
terror.
We acknowledge ,
Yahweh,
our wickedness, and
the iniquity
of our fathers; for
we have sinned against you.
We acknowledge our wickedness, O
LORD,
the guilt
of our fathers; indeed,
we have sinned against You.
Do not abhor
[
us ],
for
your
name's
sake
; do not disgrace the
throne
of
your glory:
remember ,
don't
break
your covenant with us.
For
the
sake
of
Your
name
do not despise
us; do not disgrace Your glorious
throne.
Remember Your covenant with us ;
do
not
break
it
.
Are
there
any
among
the vanities
of the nations that
can
cause
rain? or
can
the sky
give
showers? Aren't
you he
, Yahweh
our God? therefore
we will
wait
for
you ;
for you have made
all these things.
Can
the worthless
idols
of the nations bring
rain? Do
the skies
alone
send
showers? Is
this
not
by
You, O
LORD
our God? So
we put
our
hope
in
You ,
for You have done
all these things.
