Then
God said to
Jacob, “
Arise, go up to Bethel
, and settle
there .
Build
an altar there
to
the
God who appeared to
you
when you
fled
from your
brother
Esau. ”
And
God said unto
Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el
, and dwell
there :
and
make
there
an altar unto
God ,
who appeared unto
thee
when thou
fleddest
from the
face
of
Esau thy
brother
.
So
Jacob told
his household and all who
were with him, “Get
rid
of
the foreign gods that are among you .
Purify yourselves and change your garments .
Then
Jacob said
unto
his household ,
and to
all that
were with him, Put
away
the foreign gods that are among you ,
and
purify yourselves ,
and change your garments :
Then
let us arise and go to Bethel.
I will build
an altar there
to
God, who answered me in my
day of distress .
He
has
been
with me wherever
I have
gone
. ”
and
let us arise ,
and go up
to Beth-el;
and
I will make
there
an altar unto
God, who answered me in the
day of my
distress ,
and
was
with me in
the
way
which
I went
.
So
they gave Jacob all their
foreign gods and
all
their earrings
, and Jacob buried
them under the oak near
Shechem.
And
they gave unto
Jacob all the
foreign gods which
were
in
their hand
, and the
rings
which
were
in
their
ears;
and
Jacob hid
them under the oak which
was
by
Shechem.
As
they set
out,
a terror from
God fell
over
the surrounding
cities ,
so
that they did not pursue Jacob’s
sons.
And
they journeyed:
and
a terror of
God was
upon
the cities that were
round
about
them,
and
they did not pursue after
the
sons of
Jacob
.
So Jacob and
everyone
with
him
arrived
in
Luz (that
is
, Bethel)
in the land of Canaan.
So Jacob came
to
Luz, which
is
in the land of Canaan (the
same
is
Beth-el),
he
and
all
the
people
that
were
with
him
.
There
Jacob
built an altar, and he
called that
place El- bethel,
because it
was
there that
God had
revealed Himself
to
Jacob
as
he fled from his brother.
And
he
built there
an altar, and called the
place El- beth-el;
because there God was
revealed unto
him,
when
he fled from the
face
of
his brother.
Now
Deborah ,
Rebekah’s
nurse ,
died and was buried under the oak below
Bethel.
So
Jacob
named
it Allon- bachuth
.
And
Deborah Rebekah's
nurse died ,
and she
was buried below
Beth-el
under the oak :
and
the
name
of
it was
called
Allon- bacuth
.
After
Jacob had
returned
from Paddan-aram, God
appeared
to
him
again
and blessed him.
And
God
appeared
unto
Jacob again,
when
he
came
from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.
And God said to
him, “Though
your
name is Jacob ,
you
will
no
longer
be called Jacob .
Instead
, your
name
will
be
Israel .”
So
God
named
him
Israel.
And God said unto
him, Thy
name is Jacob :
thy
name
shall
not
be called any
more
Jacob, but
Israel shall
be
thy
name:
and
he
called
his
name
Israel.
And God told
him, “
I am God Almighty .
Be fruitful and multiply .
A nation —even
a company of nations —
shall come
from
you
, and kings shall descend
from
you.
And God said
unto
him, I am God Almighty :
be fruitful and multiply ;
a nation and
a company of nations shall be
of
thee
, and kings shall come
out
of
thy
loins;
The land that
I gave to
Abraham and Isaac I will give to
you
, and I
will give this
land to
your
descendants
after
you
. ”
and
the land which
I gave unto
Abraham and Isaac ,
to
thee
I will give it
, and to
thy
seed
after
thee
will I
give the
land.
Then
God went up from the place where He had
spoken
with him.
And
God went up from him
in
the place where he spake
with him.
So
Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God
had
spoken
with him —
a stone marker—
and he poured out a drink offering on
it
and anointed
it
with
oil.
And
Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he
spake
with him ,
a pillar
of
stone :
and he poured out a drink -
offering thereon,
and poured
oil thereon
.
Jacob called the place where God had
spoken
with him Bethel
.
And
Jacob called the name
of
the
place where God spake
with him ,
Beth-el
.
Later,
they set
out
from Bethel,
and while
they
were
still some distance from
Ephrath ,
Rachel began
to
give
birth
, and her
labor was
difficult
.
And
they journeyed
from Beth-el;
and there
was
still some distance to
come
to
Ephrath :
and
Rachel travailed
, and she
had
hard
labor.
During
her
severe
labor, the midwife said to
her, “Do
not be
afraid,
for you
are
having
another son. ”
And
it
came
to
pass,
when
she
was
in
hard
labor, that
the midwife said unto
her, Fear
not ;
for now
thou
shalt
have
another son.
And with
her last
breath—
for she was
dying—
she named
him
Ben-oni .
But his father called him Benjamin.
And it
came
to
pass,
as
her soul
was
departing
(
for she died),
that
she called
his
name
Ben-oni :
but his father called him Benjamin.
So
Rachel died and was buried on
the way to Ephrath ( that
is ,
Bethlehem
).
And
Rachel died ,
and was buried in
the way to Ephrath ( the
same
is Beth-lehem
).
Jacob set up a pillar on
her grave ;
it
marks
Rachel’s
tomb
to
this day.
And
Jacob set up a pillar upon
her grave :
the
same
is
the
Pillar
of
Rachel's
grave
unto
this day.
Israel again
set
out
and pitched
his tent beyond the Tower of Eder.
And
Israel journeyed,
and spread
his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
While Israel was
living
in that region
, Reuben went in
and slept
with his father’s
concubine Bilhah,
and Israel heard about
it. Jacob had
twelve sons
:
And
it
came
to
pass,
while Israel dwelt
in that land
, that
Reuben went and lay
with Bilhah
his father's
concubine :
and Israel heard of
it. Now
the
sons
of
Jacob were
twelve:
The sons of Leah were
Reuben the
firstborn
of
Jacob
, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun .
The sons of Leah :
Reuben, Jacob's
first-born,
and
Simeon, and
Levi, and
Judah, and
Issachar, and Zebulun ;
The sons of Rachel were
Joseph and Benjamin .
the sons of Rachel :
Joseph and Benjamin ;
The sons of Rachel’s
maidservant
Bilhah were
Dan and Naphtali .
and
the sons of Bilhah ,
Rachel's
handmaid:
Dan and Naphtali ;
And the sons of Leah’s
maidservant
Zilpah were
Gad and Asher .
These are the sons of Jacob, who
were born to him in Paddan-aram.
and the sons of Zilpah ,
Leah's
handmaid:
Gad and Asher :
these are the sons of Jacob, that
were born to him in Paddan-aram.
Jacob returned
to
his father Isaac
at
Mamre, near
Kiriath-arba ( that
is ,
Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had
stayed
.
And
Jacob came
unto
Isaac
his father to
Mamre, to
Kiriath-arba ( the
same
is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac sojourned
.
And Isaac lived
180
years.
And the
days
of
Isaac were
a
hundred
and
fourscore
years.
Then
he
breathed
his
last
and died and was gathered to
his people, old and full of years.
And his
sons
Esau and Jacob buried him.
And Isaac
gave
up
the
ghost,
and
died ,
and was gathered unto
his people, old and full of days:
and Esau and Jacob his
sons
buried him.
