he cometh

the messengers returned to Jacob, they
said

We went
to your
brother Esau, and now
he is
coming
to meet you—he
and four hundred men with him. ”
Then
Jacob
was
greatly
afraid
and
distressed:
and he
divided the
people that
was
with
him
, and
the flocks ,
and herds ,
and the
camels ,
into
two
bands;
In
great
fear
and distress,
Jacob
divided his
people into
two
camps
, as
well
as
the flocks and herds and camels .
And
said
, If Esau come
to
the
one
company,
and smite
it
, then the other company
which

left
shall
escape.
He
thought
, “
If Esau comes
and attacks

camp
, then the other camp

escape. ”

Jacob said
, O God of my father Abraham, and
God of my father Isaac, the LORD which
saidst

kindred, and I will deal
well

Jacob declared

O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, the LORD who
told
me, ‘Go
back
to
your
country and to your
kindred, and I will make
you
prosper,’
I am not
worthy
of

least
of all the mercies,
and of
all

truth,
which
thou
hast
showed
unto

servant ;

with my staff I passed

Jordan ;

now I am
become two bands

he
said, Thy
name shall
be
called
no more
Jacob, but Israel :
for
as

prince
hast
thou
power
with God and with men, and hast
prevailed.

man
said, “Your
name will
no longer
be
Jacob, but Israel ,
because
you
have
struggled
with God and with men, and you
have
prevailed. ”
And Jacob asked
him,
and
said
, Tell me ,

pray
thee,
thy
name. And

ask after
my name? And
he blessed him
there.

the place Peniel :
for
I have seen God face to face, and my life is
preserved
.

saying,
“Indeed,
I have seen God face to face, and yet
my life was
spared
. ”

as
he
passed
over
Penuel
the sun rose upon
him, and he halted
upon
his thigh
.
The sun rose above
him as
he
passed
by
Penuel
, and he was
limping
because
of
his hip
.
Therefore the children
of
Israel
eat
not of
the sinew
which
shrank,
which is upon
the hollow
of the thigh
, unto
this
day:
because he
touched
the hollow
of Jacob's
thigh
in
the
sinew
that shrank
.
Therefore to
this
day
the Israelites
do
not eat
the tendon
which is at
the socket
of the hip
, because the socket
of Jacob’s
hip
was
struck
near
that tendon
.
