YLT
Young's Literal Translation
What
I am
saying
is
that
as
long as the heir is a child
, he is
no
different
from a slave,
although
he
is
the
owner
of everything.
And
I say,
so
long time
as the heir is a babe
, he differeth
nothing
from a servant
--
being
lord
of all,
He
is subject
to
guardians
and trustees
until
the date
set
by
his
father .
but
is under
tutors
and stewards
till
the time
appointed
of
the
father ,
So also, when we were children
, we
were
enslaved
under the basic
principles
of the world .
so also we
, when we were babes
, under the elements
of the world were
in
servitude,
But
when the time had
fully
come, God sent His Son, born
of a woman, born
under the
law,
and
when the fulness
of
time did
come, God sent forth
His Son, come
of a woman, come
under law,
to
redeem
those under the
law, that we
might
receive
our
adoption as
sons .
that
those under law he
may
redeem
, that the
adoption of
sons we
may
receive;
And because you
are sons, God sent
the Spirit of His Son into our
hearts, crying out
, “
Abba, Father! ”
and because ye
are sons, God did
send
forth
the spirit of His Son into your
hearts, crying, `
Abba, Father! '
So you
are
no longer
a slave
, but a son ;
and since
you
are
a son, you
are
also an heir through
God.
so that
thou
art
no more
a servant
, but a son ,
and if
a son, also an heir of
God through
Christ
.
Formerly
, when
you
did
not know
God, you
were slaves
to those who
by nature are
not
gods .
But
then
, indeed,
not having
known
God, ye
were in
servitude
to those not
by nature gods ,
But
now that
you
know
God
, or
rather are
known by God ,
how is
it
that
you
are
turning
back
to
those
weak and worthless
principles?
Do
you
wish
to be enslaved
by
them
all
over
again
?
and
now, having
known
God
--
and
rather being
known by God --
how turn
ye
again
unto
the
weak and poor
elements
to which
anew
ye
desire
to
be in
servitude
?
You
are
observing
special
days and months and seasons
and years!
days ye
observe,
and months ,
and times,
and years!
I fear
for
you, that
my
efforts
for
you
may
have
been
in vain.
I am
afraid
of
you, lest
in vain I
did
labour
toward
you
.
I
beg
you,
brothers,
become like
me
, for
I became
like
you.
You have
done
me no wrong.
Become as
I
`am'
--
because
I
also
`am'
as
ye
brethren
, I beseech
you ;
to
me ye
did
no hurt,
You
know
that it
was
because
of an
illness
that
I
first
preached
the gospel
to you .
and
ye
have
known
that through
infirmity
of the flesh
I
did
proclaim
good
news
to you at
the
first,
And although
my illness
was
a
trial to
you,
you
did not despise or
reject me.
Instead
, you
welcomed
me
as if
I
were
an
angel
of God ,
as if
I
were
Christ Jesus Himself.
and my trial that
`is'
in
my
flesh
ye
did not despise nor
reject, but
as a
messenger
of God ye
did
receive
me
--
as Christ Jesus ;
What then has
become
of
your blessing
? For I can
testify that
, if it
were
possible, you
would
have
torn
out
your eyes and
given them
to me .
what then was
your happiness
? for I testify to
you
, that
if possible, your eyes having
plucked
out,
ye
would
have
given to me ;
Have I now
become your
enemy
by
telling
you the
truth
?
so
that
your
enemy
have I become ,
being
true
to
you?
Those
people
are zealous for you ,
but
not in
a
good
way.
Instead
, they want
to isolate
you
from
us, so
that you
may be zealous for
them.
they
are zealous for you --
`yet'
not well
, but
they wish
to shut
us out
, that for
them
ye
may be zealous ;
Nevertheless,
it is good to be zealous
if
it
serves
a
noble
purpose—
at any
time
, and not only when
I
am
with you .
and
`
it is '
good to be zealously
regarded,
in
what
is
good,
at all
times
, and not only in
my
being
present
with you ;
My children, for
whom I
am
again in the
pains
of
childbirth
until
Christ is
formed in you,
my little
children, of
whom again I
travail
in birth,
till
Christ may
be
formed in you,
how
I
wish
I could
be with you now and change my tone
, because I am perplexed
about you.
and
I was
wishing
to
be present
with you now ,
and to
change my voice
, because I am in
doubt
about you.
Tell me, you
who want
to be under the
law, do
you
not
understand
what
the law says
?
Tell me, ye
who are
willing
to be under law, the law do
ye
not
hear
?
For it is
written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave
woman
and the
other
by the free woman .
for it hath
been
written ,
that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant,
and one
by the free -
woman ,
His
son
by
the slave
woman
was
born
according to the
flesh, but
his
son
by
the free woman was
born
through the promise .
but
he
who
`is'
of
the maid-servant,
according to flesh hath
been
, and
he
who
`is'
of
the free -
woman ,
through the promise ;
These
things serve
as
illustrations
, for the women
represent
two covenants .
One covenant
is
from Mount Sinai and
bears
children
into
slavery:
This
is Hagar .
which
things are
allegorized
, for these
are
the two covenants :
one ,
indeed,
from mount Sinai ,
to
servitude
bringing
forth,
which
is Hagar ;
Now
Hagar
stands
for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds
to the present-day
Jerusalem, because
she
is in slavery
with her children .
for this
Hagar
is
mount Sinai in Arabia ,
and doth
correspond
to the Jerusalem that
now
`is'
, and
is in servitude
with her children ,
But
the Jerusalem above is free, and
she
is our
mother .
and
the Jerusalem above is the
free -woman
, which
is mother of
us
all,
For it is
written :
“
Rejoice, O barren woman
, who bears
no
children
; break forth and cry aloud
, you
who have
never
travailed;
because more
are the children of the desolate woman
than of her who
has
a
husband. ”
for it hath
been
written ,
`
Rejoice, O barren, who art
not
bearing
; break forth and cry, thou
who art
not
travailing,
because many
`
are '
the children of the desolate --
more
than of her having
the
husband. '
Now
you
, brothers
, like
Isaac, are children of promise .
And
we
, brethren
, as
Isaac, are children of promise ,
At
that
time,
however,
the
son
born by
the flesh persecuted
the
son
born
by
the Spirit .
It
is
the
same
now .
but
as
then
he
who
was
born according
to
the flesh did
persecute
him
according
to
the spirit ,
so
also
now ;
But what does
the Scripture
say
? “Expel
the slave
woman
and her son, for the slave
woman’s
son will
never
share
in
the inheritance
with the free
woman’s
son .”
but what saith
the Writing
? `Cast
forth
the maid-servant
and her son, for the son of
the maid-servant
may
not
be
heir
with the son of
the
free-woman;'
Therefore
, brothers
, we are not children of
the
slave
woman
, but of
the free woman
.
then
, brethren
, we are not a
maid-servant's
children, but the free -woman's
.
