At
Iconium,
Paul
and Barnabas
went
as
usual
into the Jewish
synagogue, where
they
spoke
so well
that a great number
of Jews and Greeks believed.
And it
came
to
pass
in
Iconium
that
they
entered
together
into the synagogue of
the
Jews
, and
so spake
that a great multitude
both
of Jews and of
Greeks believed.
But the unbelieving
Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned
their
minds
against the brothers
.
But the Jews that
were
disobedient
stirred up the souls
of
the
Gentiles ,
and made
them
evil
affected
against the brethren
.
So
Paul
and
Barnabas
spent
considerable
time there ,
speaking boldly for
the Lord, who affirmed
the message
of His grace by
enabling
them
to
perform
signs and wonders.
Long
time therefore
they
tarried
`
there '
speaking boldly in
the Lord, who bare
witness
unto
the word
of his grace ,
granting
signs and wonders to
be
done
by
their
hands
.
The people
of the city were
divided .
Some
sided
with the Jews, and others
with the apostles.
But
the multitude
of the city was
divided ;
and
part
held
with the Jews, and part
with the apostles.
But
when the Gentiles and Jews ,
together
with their rulers, set
out
to mistreat
and stone them,
And
when there
was
made
an
onset
both
of
the Gentiles and of
the
Jews with their rulers, to treat
them
shamefully
and to
stone them,
they found
out
about
it and fled to
the Lycaonian
cities of Lystra and Derbe and to
the surrounding
region ,
they became
aware
of
it ,
and fled unto
the cities of Lycaonia,
Lystra and Derbe ,
and the region round
about:
where
they continued
to
preach
the gospel.
and
there
they preached
the gospel.
In
Lystra there sat a man crippled
in his feet, who
was
lame
from birth
and
had
never walked.
And
at
Lystra there sat a certain
man ,
impotent
in his feet, a
cripple
from his
mother's
womb,
who
never had
walked.
This
man
was
listening
to
the words
of
Paul, who looked
intently
at
him and saw
that he had faith to be healed.
The same
heard
Paul speaking
, who ,
fastening
eyes
upon
him ,
and seeing
that he had faith to be made
whole,
In
a loud voice Paul
called
out
, “
Stand up
on your
feet !”
And the
man
jumped
up and began
to
walk
.
said
with
a loud voice, Stand upright
on thy
feet .
And he
leaped
up and walked
.
When the crowds
saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices
in the Lycaonian
language:
“
The gods have
come down to us in human
form!”
And
when the multitude
saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice,
saying
in the speech
of
Lycaonia,
The gods are
come down to us in the
likeness
of
men.
Barnabas
they called Zeus
, and Paul they
called
Hermes
, because he was the chief speaker.
And
they called Barnabas
, Jupiter;
and Paul, Mercury,
because he was the chief speaker.
The priest of Zeus,
whose temple was just
outside
the city, brought bulls
and wreaths
to
the city
gates, hoping
to
offer
a
sacrifice along
with the crowds
.
And
the priest of Jupiter
whose `
temple '
was before
the city, brought oxen
and garlands
unto
the gates, and
would
have
done
sacrifice with the multitudes
.
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul found
out
about
this
, they tore
their clothes
and rushed
into
the crowd,
shouting
,
But when the apostles ,
Barnabas and Paul, heard
of
it,
they rent
their garments,
and sprang
forth
among
the multitude
, crying
out
“Men
, why are
you
doing
this
? We too
are only
men ,
human
like you .
We
are
bringing
you good news
that you
should turn from these worthless
things to
the
living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything
in them .
and
saying
, Sirs,
why do
ye
these
things
? We also
are men of
like passions
with
you ,
and
bring
you good tidings,
that ye
should turn from these vain
things unto
a
living God, who made the
heaven and the
earth and the
sea ,
and all
that
in them is:
In past
generations ,
He
let
all nations go
their own way
.
who
in the
generations gone
by
suffered
all the
nations to
walk
in
their own ways
.
Yet He has
not
left Himself without testimony
to
His
goodness:
He gives
you rain
from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness. ”
And
yet He left not
himself without witness,
in
that
he did
good
and
gave
you from heaven rains
and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.
Even
with these words,
Paul
and
Barnabas
could
hardly
stop
the crowds
from sacrificing
to
them.
And
with these sayings
scarce
restrained
they
the multitudes
from doing
sacrifice
unto
them.
Then
some
Jews arrived
from Antioch and Iconium and won
over
the crowds.
They stoned Paul and dragged him outside
the city, presuming
he was dead.
But
there
came
Jews thither
from Antioch and Iconium :
and having
persuaded
the multitudes,
they stoned Paul ,
and dragged him out
of
the city, supposing
that
he was dead.
But after
the disciples had
gathered
around
him, he got
up and went
back
into the city .
And the next
day
he left
with Barnabas for
Derbe.
But as
the disciples stood
round
about
him, he rose
up ,
and entered
into the city :
and on
the morrow
he went
forth
with Barnabas to
Derbe.
They preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples .
Then
they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,
And
when
they had
preached the gospel to that city ,
and had
made many disciples ,
they returned to Lystra, and
to
Iconium, and to
Antioch,
strengthening
the souls of the disciples and
encouraging
them to continue in the faith .
“
We must endure
many
hardships
to
enter the kingdom of God ,”
they
said
.
confirming
the souls of the disciples ,
exhorting
them to continue in the faith ,
and
that
through
many
tribulations
we must enter into
the kingdom of God.
Paul
and Barnabas
appointed elders
for them in each
church, praying
and fasting as
they entrusted
them to the Lord, in
whom they had believed.
And when
they
had
appointed for them elders
in every
church, and had
prayed
with
fasting ,
they commended
them to the Lord, on
whom they had believed.
After
passing
through Pisidia, they
came to Pamphylia.
And
they
passed
through Pisidia, and
came to Pamphylia.
And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia .
And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia ;
From
Attalia
they sailed to Antioch, where
they had been commended
to the grace of God for the work they had just
completed
.
and
thence
they sailed to Antioch, from
whence
they had been committed
to the grace of God for the work which
they had fulfilled
.
When they arrived
, they
gathered the church together and
reported
all that God had done through
them, and how
He had opened the
door of faith to
the Gentiles.
And
when they were
come
, and
had
gathered the church together ,
they
rehearsed
all things
that God had done with
them, and that
he had opened a
door of faith unto
the Gentiles.
And they spent
a
long
time there
with the disciples.
And they tarried
no
little
time with the disciples.
