In the twenty-third
year of the
reign
of
Joash son of Ahaziah over
Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became
king
of
Israel, and he
reigned in
Samaria
seventeen years.
In the three
and
twentieth
year of Joash the
son of Ahaziah ,
king
of
Judah, Jehoahaz the
son of Jehu began
to
reign
over
Israel in
Samaria
, [
and reigned ]
seventeen years.
And
he did evil in the sight of the
LORD
and followed the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had
caused
Israel to commit
; he did
not
turn
away
from them
.
He did that
which
was
evil in the sight of Yahweh,
and followed the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat ,
with
which
he
made
Israel to sin
; he didn't
depart
from it
.
So
the anger of the
LORD
burned
against Israel, and He delivered them continually
into the hands
of Hazael king of Aram
and his
son Ben-hadad
.
The anger of Yahweh
was
kindled
against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand
of Hazael king of Syria,
and into
the
hand
of
Benhadad
the
son of
Hazael,
continually
.
Then
Jehoahaz sought
the
favor
of
the
LORD
, and the
LORD
listened to him because
He saw the oppression that the king of Aram
had
inflicted
on
Israel
.
Jehoahaz begged
Yahweh
, and Yahweh
listened to him ;
for
he saw the oppression of
Israel,
how
that the king of Syria
oppressed
them
.
So
the
LORD
gave Israel a deliverer
, and
they escaped
the power
of the Arameans.
Then
the people
of Israel lived in their own
homes
as they
had
before.
(Yahweh
gave Israel a savior
, so
that
they went
out
from
under
the hand
of the Syrians;
and
the children
of Israel lived in their tents
as before.
Nevertheless ,
they did
not
turn
away
from the sins that
the house of Jeroboam had
caused
Israel to commit
, but they
continued
to
walk
in
them.
The Asherah pole
even
remained
standing
in Samaria.
Nevertheless they didn't
depart
from the sins of
the house of Jeroboam ,
with
which
he
made
Israel to sin
, but walked
therein:
and
there
remained
the Asherah also
in Samaria. )
Jehoahaz had
no
army
left,
except
fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot
soldiers,
because
the king of Aram
had
destroyed them and made them like the dust at
threshing.
For
he
didn't
leave
to
Jehoahaz of
the
people
save
fifty horsemen, and
ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen;
for
the king of Syria
destroyed them ,
and made them like the dust in
threshing.
As
for
the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, along
with
all his
accomplishments
and his might, are
they not
written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Now
the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and
all that
he
did,
and his might, aren't
they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
And
Jehoahaz rested
with his fathers and was
buried in Samaria .
And his son Jehoash
reigned in his place.
Jehoahaz slept
with his fathers ;
and they
buried him
in Samaria :
and Joash
his son reigned in his place.
In the thirty-seventh year of the
reign
of
Joash over
Judah ,
Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became
king
of
Israel in Samaria, and he
reigned sixteen years.
In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king
of
Judah began
Jehoash the
son of Jehoahaz to
reign
over
Israel in Samaria, [
and reigned ]
sixteen years.
And
he did evil in the sight of the
LORD
and
did
not
turn
away
from all the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had
caused
Israel to commit,
but he walked in
them
.
He did that
which
was
evil in the sight of Yahweh;
he
didn't
depart
from all the sins of
Jeroboam the
son of Nebat ,
with
which
he
made
Israel to sin;
but he walked therein
.
As
for
the rest of the acts of Jehoash
, along
with
all his
accomplishments
and his might ,
including
his
war
against Amaziah king of Judah, are
they not
written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Now
the rest of the acts of Joash
, and
all that
he
did,
and his might with
which
he
fought
against Amaziah king of Judah, aren't
they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
And
Jehoash
rested
with his fathers ,
and Jeroboam succeeded
him
on the
throne .
Jehoash
was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
Joash
slept
with his fathers ;
and Jeroboam sat
on his
throne :
and
Joash
was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
When
Elisha had
fallen sick with
the
illness
from
which he would
die,
Jehoash
king of Israel came down to him and wept over him, saying
, “
My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel
! ”
Now
Elisha was
fallen sick of
his
sickness
of
which he died:
and
Joash
the
king of Israel came down to him ,
and wept over him, and
said
, My father, my father, the chariots of
Israel
and the
horsemen of it
!
Elisha told
him, “
Take a
bow and some
arrows .”
So
Jehoash
took a
bow and some
arrows.
Elisha said
to
him, Take bow and arrows ;
and
he
took to
him
bow and arrows.
Then
Elisha
said to the king of Israel, “
Put your hand on the bow .”
So
the
king
put his hand on the
bow,
and
Elisha put
his hands on the king’s
hands.
He
said to the king of Israel, Put your hand on the bow ;
and
he
put his hand [
on it].
Elisha laid
his hands on the king's
hands.
“
Open the east
window ,”
said
Elisha.
So
he opened it and
Elisha said, “
Shoot !”
So
he shot. And
Elisha
declared:
“This
is
the
LORD’s
arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram,
for you shall strike the Arameans
in Aphek until you have put
an
end
to
them. ”
He
said,
Open the window eastward;
and
he opened it .
Then
Elisha said, Shoot ;
and
he shot. He
said,
Yahweh's
arrow of victory, even
the arrow of victory over Syria;
for you shall strike the Syrians
in Aphek ,
until you have consumed
them.
Then
Elisha
said, “
Take the arrows !”
So
he took them ,
and
Elisha
said to the king of Israel, “Strike
the ground !”
So
he struck the
ground
three
times
and stopped
.
He
said, Take the arrows ;
and
he took them .
He
said to the king of Israel, Smite
on
the ground ;
and
he struck thrice,
and stayed
.
But
the man of God was angry with him and said, “
You should have struck the
ground
five or six times .
Then you would
have
struck down
Aram
until you had put
an
end
to
it .
But
now you will
strike down
Aram
only
three
times
. ”
The man of God was angry with him ,
and said, You should have struck five or six times :
then had
you struck Syria
until you had consumed
it ,
whereas
now you shall
strike Syria
but
thrice
.
And
Elisha died and was
buried. Now the Moabite
raiders
used
to
come
into
the land every
spring
.
Elisha died ,
and they
buried him
. Now the bands
of
the Moabites
invaded
the
land at
the
coming
in
of
the
year
.
Once
, as the
Israelites
were burying a man, suddenly
they saw
a band of
raiders,
so
they threw
the man’s
body
into Elisha’s
tomb .
And as soon as his
body
touched the bones of Elisha, the
man
was
revived and stood up on his feet.
It
happened
, as they
were burying a man, that
behold,
they spied
a band ;
and
they cast
the man
into the
tomb of
Elisha:
and as soon as the
man
touched the bones of Elisha, he
revived ,
and stood up on his feet.
And
Hazael king of Aram
oppressed Israel throughout
the reign
of Jehoahaz.
Hazael king of Syria
oppressed Israel all
the days
of Jehoahaz.
But the
LORD
was gracious to Israel
and had compassion on them, and He
turned
toward
them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob .
And
to
this
day
, the
LORD
has
been
unwilling
to
destroy them or
cast them from His presence.
But Yahweh
was gracious to them,
and had compassion on them, and had
respect
to
them ,
because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and
would
not
destroy them ,
neither
cast he
them from his presence as
yet
.
When
Hazael king of Aram
died ,
his son Ben-hadad
reigned in his place.
Hazael king of Syria
died ;
and
Benhadad
his son reigned in his place.
Then
Jehoash son of Jehoahaz took back
from
Ben-hadad
son of Hazael the cities that
Hazael
had taken in
battle
from
his father Jehoahaz
. Jehoash
defeated
Ben-hadad
three times, and so
recovered the cities of Israel.
Jehoash the
son of Jehoahaz took again
out
of
the
hand
of
Benhadad
the
son of Hazael the cities which
he
had taken out
of
the
hand
of
Jehoahaz
his father by
war
. Three times did
Joash
strike
him
, and recovered the cities of Israel.
