It
happened
in those days ,
that
the Philistines gathered their hosts
together
for warfare ,
to
fight
with
Israel. Achish said to David, Know
you assuredly,
that you shall
go out with me in
the
host,
you
and
your
men
.
Now
in those days the Philistines gathered their forces
for warfare against
Israel. So
Achish said to David, “
You must
understand
that you and
your
men
are
to
go out to
battle
with me. ”
David said
to
Achish
, Therefore
you shall
know what your servant will
do. Achish
said
to
David
, Therefore
will
I make you keeper
of
my head
for ever
.
David replied
, “Then
you will
come
to
know what your servant can
do. ”
“Very
well
, ”
said
Achish.
“
I will
make you my bodyguard
for life
. ”
Now Samuel was
dead
, and all Israel had lamented
him ,
and buried him in Ramah, even
in
his own city. Saul had put
away
those
who
had
familiar
spirits,
and
the wizards,
out
of
the land.
Now by
this
time
Samuel had
died
, and all Israel had mourned
for
him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And
Saul had removed
the mediums
and
spiritists
from
the land.
The Philistines gathered
themselves
together,
and
came and encamped
in
Shunem :
and
Saul gathered all Israel together,
and they
encamped
in
Gilboa.
The Philistines came together
and camped
at
Shunem ,
while
Saul gathered all Israel and camped
at
Gilboa.
When Saul saw the host
of
the
Philistines
, he was afraid ,
and his
heart
trembled greatly
.
When Saul saw the Philistine
army
, he was afraid and trembled violently
.
When
Saul
inquired of Yahweh
, Yahweh
didn't
answer him ,
neither
by dreams ,
nor
by
Urim ,
nor
by
prophets.
He
inquired of the
LORD
, but
the
LORD
did
not
answer him by dreams or
Urim or
prophets.
Then said
Saul to his servants, Seek
me a woman who has
a familiar
spirit
, that
I may
go to
her,
and inquire
of
her. His
servants
said
to
him,
Behold,
there is a woman
who
has
a
familiar
spirit
at En-dor
.
Then Saul said
to his servants, “Find
me a woman who is
a medium
, so
I can
go and consult
her. ”
“
There is a medium
at Endor,”
his
servants
replied
.
Saul disguised himself ,
and
put
on other
clothing
, and went,
he and
two men with
him,
and
they came to the woman by
night :
and he
said, Please
divine
to
me
by
the
familiar
spirit ,
and
bring
me up whoever
I shall
name to
you
.
So
Saul disguised himself by
putting
on different
clothes
, and he set
out
with
two of
his
men .
They came to the woman at
night ,
and Saul
said, “Consult
a
spirit for
me .
Bring
up for
me
the
one
I name. ”
The woman said
to
him,
Behold
, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut
off
those
who
have
familiar
spirits,
and
the wizards,
out
of
the land :
why then
lay
you a snare
for
my
life,
to cause
me to
die
?
But
the woman replied
, “Surely
you know what Saul has done, how he has killed
the mediums
and
spiritists
in
the land .
Why have
you set
a trap
to get
me killed
? ”
Saul swore to her by Yahweh,
saying,
As Yahweh
lives, there
shall
no punishment happen
to
you for this thing
.
Then
Saul swore to her by the
LORD:
“
As surely
as
the
LORD
lives, no punishment shall
come
upon
you for this. ”
Then
said
the
woman,
Whom shall I bring up to
you? He
said,
Bring me
up Samuel.
“
Whom shall I bring up for
you? ”
the
woman
asked.
“
Bring up Samuel ,”
he
replied
.
When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with
a loud voice ;
and the
woman
spoke
to Saul, saying,
Why have you deceived me? for
you are Saul .
But
when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out
in
a loud voice and said
to Saul, “
Why have you deceived me? You are Saul !”
The
king
said
to
her,
Don't
be afraid :
for
what do you see? The
woman
said
to
Saul,
I see a god coming up out of the earth.
“Do
not
be afraid ,”
the
king
replied.
“
What do you see? ”
“
I see a god coming up out of the earth ,”
the
woman
answered
.
He
said
to
her,
What form
is
he of
? She
said,
An old man comes
up ;
and he is covered
with
a robe. Saul perceived
that it was Samuel, and he bowed with
his
face
to
the
ground,
and
did
obeisance
.
“
What does
he look
like
? ”
asked
Saul.
“
An old man is
coming
up ,”
she
replied.
“
And he is wearing
a robe. ”
So
Saul knew
that it was Samuel, and he bowed facedown
in
reverence
.
Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disquieted
me ,
to
bring
me up? Saul
answered,
I am sore
distressed ;
for
the Philistines make
war
against me, and God is
departed
from me ,
and
answers me no
more
, neither
by prophets ,
nor
by dreams :
therefore
I have called you,
that
you may
make
known
to me what I
shall
do.
Then
Samuel said to Saul, “
Why have you disturbed
me by
bringing
me up? ”
“
I am deeply
distressed ,”
replied
Saul.
“
The Philistines are
fighting
against me, and God has
turned
away
from me .
He
no
longer
answers me, either
by prophets or
by dreams .
So
I have called on
you to tell
me what to
do. ”
Samuel
said,
Why then
do you ask
of
me, seeing
Yahweh
is
departed
from you ,
and is
become your adversary
?
“
Why do you consult
me, ”
asked
Samuel,
“since
the
LORD
has
turned
away
from you and become your enemy
?
Yahweh
has done to
you,
as
he spoke by
me: and
Yahweh
has torn the kingdom
out of your hand ,
and given it to your neighbor ,
even
to
David.
He
has done exactly
what
He spoke through
me: The
LORD
has torn the kingship
out of your hand and given it to your neighbor David.
Because you didn't
obey the voice
of
Yahweh,
and
didn't
execute
his fierce
wrath
on
Amalek, therefore
has Yahweh
done this thing
to you this
day
.
Because you did
not
obey the LORD
or
carry
out
His burning
anger
against
Amalek, the
LORD
has done this to you today
.
Moreover Yahweh
will deliver Israel also
with you into the hand of the Philistines ;
and tomorrow shall
you and your sons be with me :
Yahweh
will deliver the host
of Israel also
into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover ,
the
LORD
will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines ,
and tomorrow you and your sons will
be with me .
And
the
LORD
will deliver the army
of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. ”
Then
Saul fell immediately
his
full
length
on the earth,
and
was
sore
afraid
, because
of
the words of Samuel :
and there
was
no
strength in
him;
for
he had eaten no
bread
all the
day ,
nor
all
the
night.
Immediately
Saul fell flat
on the ground
, terrified
by
the words of Samuel .
And his
strength was
gone,
because
he had not
eaten anything
all that
day and
night.
The woman came to Saul ,
and saw that
he was sore
troubled
, and
said to him, Behold
, your handmaid
has listened
to
your voice ,
and
I have
put
my life in my hand,
and have
listened
to
your
words
which
you spoke
to
me.
When
the woman came to Saul and saw how
distraught
he was, she
said to him, “Look
, your maidservant
has obeyed
your voice .
I took
my life in my hands
and did
as
you told
me.
Now therefore,
please listen also
to the
voice
of
your handmaid,
and let me set a morsel of bread before you ;
and
eat,
that
you may have strength ,
when
you
go on your way.
Now please listen to your servant
and let me set a morsel of bread before you so
you may eat
and
have the
strength to
go on your way. ”
But
he
refused, and
said
, I will not eat. But his servants ,
together
with
the woman ,
constrained
him ;
and he listened
to
their voice. So
he arose
from the earth,
and sat on the bed.
Saul
refused, saying
, “
I will not eat. ”
But his servants joined
the woman in
urging
him ,
and he heeded
their voice. He got
up
from the ground
and sat on the bed.
The woman had a fattened calf in
the
house ;
and
she
hurried
, and killed
it ;
and
she took flour, and
kneaded it, and did
bake
unleavened bread of
it:
The woman had a fattened calf at
her
house, and she
quickly
slaughtered
it .
She also
took flour, kneaded it, and baked
unleavened bread .
and
she brought
it before
Saul ,
and before
his servants ;
and they ate. Then
they
rose
up,
and went
away
that night.
She served
it to
Saul and his servants ,
and they ate. And that night they
got
up
and
left
.
