So
David left
Gath
and took
refuge
in
the cave of Adullam .
When his brothers
and the
rest
of
his father’s
household
heard about
it, they went down to him there
.
David therefore
departed
thence,
and escaped
to
the cave of Adullam :
and
when his brethren
and all
his father's
house
heard it, they went down thither
to him.
And all
who
were
distressed
or
indebted
or
discontented rallied
around
him
, and he became their
leader.
About four hundred men were
with
him
.
And every
one
that
was
in
distress,
and
every
one
that
was
in
debt,
and
every
one
that
was
discontented, gathered
themselves
unto
him;
and he became captain
over
them:
and
there
were
with
him
about four hundred men.
From
there
David went to Mizpeh of Moab ,
where
he said to
the king of Moab, “Please
let my father and mother stay
with you until
I learn
what God will do for me. ”
And
David went thence
to Mizpeh of Moab :
and
he said unto
the king of Moab, Let my father and my
mother ,
I
pray
thee,
come
forth,
`and
be'
with you ,
till
I know
what God will do for me.
So
he left
them in
the
care
of
the king of Moab ,
and they stayed
with him the whole
time
David was in the stronghold.
And
he brought
them before
the king of Moab :
and they dwelt
with him all
the while
that
David was in the stronghold.
Then
the prophet Gad said to
David, “Do
not stay
in the stronghold .
Depart and go
into the land of Judah. ”
So
David left
and went
to
the forest of Hereth.
And
the prophet Gad said unto
David, Abide
not in the stronghold ;
depart ,
and get
thee
into the land of Judah. Then
David departed,
and came
into
the forest of Hereth.
Soon
Saul learned
that David and his
men had
been
discovered.
At
that time
Saul was in Gibeah, sitting
under the tamarisk tree on
the
hill
at
Gibeah
, with his spear in hand and all his servants standing around
him.
And
Saul heard
that David was
discovered,
and the
men that were
with
him:
now
Saul was sitting
in Gibeah, under the tamarisk -
tree in
Ramah
, with his spear in his
hand ,
and all his servants were
standing about
him.
Then
Saul said to
his servants, “Listen
, men
of
Benjamin!
Is
the son of Jesse giving
all
of you fields and vineyards and
making
you commanders
of thousands or
hundreds ?
And
Saul said unto
his servants that
stood
about
him
, Hear
now
, ye
Benjamites;
will
the son of Jesse give
every
one
of you fields and vineyards ,
will
he
make
you all
captains
of thousands and
captains
of
hundreds ,
Is
that why
all of you have conspired against me ?
Not
one
of
you
told
me
that my own
son had
made
a covenant
with the son of Jesse .
Not
one
of you has
shown
concern
for me or revealed
to
me that my son has
stirred up my own
servant to lie in wait against
me
, as is
the
case
today.”
that all of you have conspired against me ,
and
there
is
none
that discloseth
to
me
when
my son maketh
a league
with the son of Jesse ,
and
there
is
none
of you that
is
sorry
for me ,
or discloseth
unto
me that my son hath
stirred up my servant against
me,
to lie in wait, as at
this
day?
But
Doeg the Edomite, who had
stationed
himself
with
Saul’s
servants, answered:
“
I saw the son of Jesse come
to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at
Nob
.
Then
answered
Doeg the Edomite, who stood
by
the
servants of
Saul
, and
said,
I saw the son of Jesse coming
to Nob,
to
Ahimelech the
son of Ahitub.
Ahimelech
inquired of the
LORD
for him and gave him provisions.
He
also
gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. ”
And
he
inquired of Jehovah
for him ,
and gave him victuals,
and
gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
Then the king sent messengers
to summon
Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and his father’s
whole
family
, who
were
priests at
Nob .
And all of them came
to the king.
Then the king sent to call
Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all
his father's
house
, the
priests that
were
in
Nob :
and they
came
all of them to the king.
“Listen
now, son of Ahitub ,”
said
Saul
. “
Here I am, my lord ,”
he
replied
.
And
Saul
said,
Hear
now, thou
son of Ahitub. And
he
answered,
Here I am, my lord.
And Saul asked
him, “
Why have you
and the son of Jesse conspired
against
me?
You
gave
him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him so
that he could
rise up
against me to lie in wait, as he
is
doing
today.”
And Saul said
unto
him, Why have ye
conspired
against
me,
thou
and the son of Jesse ,
in
that
thou
hast
given
him bread ,
and a sword ,
and hast
inquired of God for him ,
that he should
rise against me ,
to lie in wait, as at
this
day?
Ahimelech answered the king, “
Who among all your
servants is as
faithful as David, the king’s
son-in-law, the
captain
of
your
bodyguard
who
is honored
in your
house?
Then
Ahimelech answered the king, and
said,
And
who among all thy
servants is so
faithful as David, who
is
the king's
son-in-law, and
is taken
into
thy
council,
and
is
honorable
in thy
house?
Was
that
day
the
first
time
I inquired
of God for him? Far
be it from me !
Let not the king accuse
your
servant or
any
of my father’s
household,
for your
servant knew
nothing of this whole
affair—not
in
part
or in
whole
. ”
Have
I to-day
begun
to
inquire
of God for him? be it far
from me :
let not the king impute
anything
unto
his
servant ,
nor
to
all
the
house
of my father;
for thy
servant knoweth
nothing of all
this ,
less
or more
.
But
the king replied
, “You
will
surely die, Ahimelech, you
and all your
father’s
house !”
And
the king said
, Thou
shalt
surely die, Ahimelech, thou,
and all thy
father's
house .
Then
the king ordered
the guards
at
his
side
, “
Turn and kill
the priests of the
LORD,
because they
too
sided
with David .
For
they knew he was
fleeing
, but
they
did not tell
me. ”
But the king’s
servants would not lift
a
hand to strike
the priests of the
LORD
.
And
the king said
unto
the guard
that
stood
about
him
, Turn ,
and slay
the priests of Jehovah;
because their
hand
also
is
with David ,
and
because
they knew that
he fled
, and
did not disclose
it
to
me. But the servants of
the
king
would not put
forth
their
hand to fall
upon
the priests of Jehovah
.
So
the king ordered
Doeg, “You
turn and strike
down
the priests !”
And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck
down
the priests himself.
On that day he
killed
eighty-
five men
who
wore
the
linen ephod.
And
the king said
to
Doeg, Turn thou,
and fall
upon
the priests .
And Doeg the Edomite turned ,
and he
fell
upon
the priests ,
and
he
slew
on that day fourscore
and
five persons
that
did
wear
a
linen ephod.
He
also
put
to
the
sword
Nob, the city of the priests, with its
men and women, children and infants
, oxen ,
donkeys,
and sheep.
And
Nob, the city of the priests, smote
he
with the
edge
of
the
sword,
both
men and women, children and sucklings
, and
oxen and asses
and
sheep ,
with
the
edge
of
the
sword
.
But
one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped.
His
name
was
Abiathar, and he
fled to
David.
And
one of the sons of Ahimelech ,
the
son of Ahitub ,
named
Abiathar, escaped,
and fled after
David.
And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed
the
priests of
the
LORD
.
And Abiathar told David that Saul had slain
Jehovah's
priests.
Then
David said to
Abiathar, “
I knew that Doeg the Edomite was there that
day
, and
that he was
sure
to
tell Saul .
I myself
am
responsible
for
the lives
of everyone
in
your
father’s
house.
And
David said unto
Abiathar, I knew on
that day,
when
Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would
surely
tell Saul :
I have
occasioned
`
the death'
of all
the
persons
of
thy
father's
house.
Stay
with me ;
do
not
be
afraid
, for he who
seeks
your
life is
seeking
mine
as
well.
You
will
be
safe
with me. ”
Abide
thou
with me, fear
not;
for he that
seeketh
my
life seeketh
thy
life:
for
with me thou
shalt
be
in
safeguard
.
