Then
Rehoboam went to Shechem ,
for all Israel had
gone
there
to make him king.
Rehoboam went to Shechem :
for all Israel were
come
to Shechem
to
make him king.
When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about
this,
he was still
in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon and had
been
living
ever
since.
It
happened,
when Jeroboam the
son of Nebat heard of
it
(for
he was yet
in Egypt ,
where he had fled from the
presence
of
king Solomon ,
and Jeroboam
lived
in
Egypt,
So
they sent for
Jeroboam,
and he
and the whole
assembly of Israel came to Rehoboam and
said
,
and
they sent and called
him),
that
Jeroboam
and all
the assembly of Israel came ,
and
spoke
to Rehoboam, saying,
“
Your father put
a
heavy
yoke on
us.
But
now you should
lighten
the burden
of your father’s
service
and the
heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you. ”
Your father made
our
yoke grievous:
now therefore
make
you the grievous
service
of your father,
and his
heavy yoke which
he put on us, lighter,
and we will serve you.
Rehoboam
answered
, “Go
away
for three days and
then return
to me. ”
So
the people departed.
He
said
to
them
, Depart
yet
for three days ,
then come
again
to me. The people departed.
Then
King Rehoboam consulted
with the elders
who had served
his
father
Solomon during
his lifetime.
“How
do
you advise
me to respond
to these
people? ”
he
asked.
King Rehoboam took
counsel
with the old
men,
who had stood
before
Solomon his father
while
he
yet
lived,
saying,
What
counsel
give
you me to return
answer
to this
people?
They replied
, “
If you will be a servant to these
people and
serve
them
this day, and if
you
will respond
by
speaking
kind
words to them, they will be your servants forever. ”
They spoke
to
him
, saying,
If you will be a servant to this
people this day, and will serve
them,
and
answer
them,
and
speak
good
words to them, then
they will be your servants forever.
But Rehoboam
rejected
the advice
of the elders;
instead
, he
consulted
the young men who had grown up with him and
served
him.
But he
forsook
the counsel
of the old
men
which
they
had
given
him
, and
took
counsel
with
the young men who had grown up with him ,
who
stood
before
him.
He asked
them, “
What message
do you advise
that we send
back
to these
people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten
the yoke your father put on us ’
? ”
He said
to
them, What counsel
do you give,
that we may
return
answer
to this
people ,
who have spoken to me, saying, Make
the yoke that
your father did
put on us lighter
?
The young men who had grown up with him replied
, “This
is
how
you should
answer
these
people who said
to you, ‘
Your father made our yoke heavy, but you
should
make it lighter .’
This
is
what
you should
tell
them :
‘
My little finger is thicker than my father’s
waist!
The young men who had grown up with him spoke
to
him
, saying,
Thus
shall
you tell
this
people who spoke
to you, saying,
Your father made our yoke heavy, but make you
it lighter to
us;
thus
shall
you speak
to
them ,
My little finger is thicker than my father's
loins.
Whereas my father burdened
you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke .
Whereas
my father scourged
you with whips, I will scourge
you with scorpions. ’”
Now
whereas my father did
lade
you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke :
my father chastised
you with whips, but
I will chastise
you with scorpions.
After
three
days,
Jeroboam and all the people returned
to Rehoboam, since
the king had
said
, “
Come back
to me on
the third day. ”
So
Jeroboam and all the people came
to Rehoboam the
third
day
, as
the king bade
, saying,
Come to me again
the third day.
And
the king answered the people harshly.
He
rejected
the advice
of the elders
The king answered the people roughly,
and
forsook
the counsel
of the old
men
which
they
had
given
him,
and spoke to them as
the young men had
advised
, saying, “Whereas
my father made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke .
Whereas
my father scourged
you with whips, I will scourge
you with scorpions. ”
and spoke to them after
the counsel
of
the
young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but
I will add to your yoke :
my father chastised
you with whips, but
I will chastise
you with scorpions.
So the king did
not
listen to the people ,
and
indeed
this
turn
of
events
was from
the
LORD
, to
fulfill
the
word
He had
spoken
to Jeroboam son of Nebat through
Ahijah
the
Shilonite
.
So the king didn't
listen to the people ;
for
it
was a
thing
brought
about
of
Yahweh
, that
he might
establish
his
word,
which
Yahweh
spoke
by
Ahijah
the
Shilonite
to Jeroboam the
son of Nebat.
When all Israel saw that the king had
refused
to
listen to them, they
answered the king :
“
What portion do
we
have in David ,
and
what
inheritance in the son of Jesse ?
To your tents, O
Israel !
Look
now to your own house, O
David !”
So the
Israelites
went
home,
When all Israel saw that the king didn't
listen to them, the
people
answered the king ,
saying,
What portion have we
in David ?
neither
have
we
inheritance in the son of Jesse :
to your tents, Israel :
now see
to your own house, David .
So Israel
departed
to
their
tents.
but Rehoboam
still
reigned
over
the Israelites
living
in the cities of Judah.
But as
for
the children
of
Israel
who
lived
in the cities of Judah ,
Rehoboam
reigned
over
them
.
Then King Rehoboam sent out
Adoram, who was in
charge
of
the forced labor ,
but
all Israel stoned him to death. And
King Rehoboam mounted
his chariot in
haste
and
escaped
to Jerusalem.
Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over
the men
subject
to
forced labor ;
and
all Israel stoned him to death with
stones
. King Rehoboam made
speed
to
get
him
up
to
his chariot ,
to flee
to
Jerusalem.
So to
this
day
Israel has
been
in
rebellion
against the house of David.
So Israel rebelled
against the house of David to
this
day
.
When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had
returned, they summoned
him to the assembly
and made him king over all Israel .
Only
the
tribe
of
Judah
followed the house of David.
It
happened,
when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was
returned, that
they sent
and
called
him to the congregation,
and made him king over all Israel :
there
was
none
who
followed the house of David ,
but
the
tribe
of
Judah
only
.
And
when Rehoboam arrived
in
Jerusalem, he mobilized
the whole
house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin —180
, 000
chosen warriors —
to fight against the house of Israel and
restore
the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.
When Rehoboam was
come
to
Jerusalem, he assembled
all
the house of Judah ,
and the tribe of Benjamin, a
hundred
and
eighty
thousand
chosen men,
who
were
warriors ,
to fight against the house of Israel ,
to
bring
the kingdom again
to Rehoboam the
son of Solomon.
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God :
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God ,
saying,
“Tell
Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people
Speak
to
Rehoboam the
son of Solomon ,
king of Judah, and
to
all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to
the rest of the people ,
saying,
that
this
is
what
the
LORD
says :
‘
You are
not to
go up and
fight against your brothers ,
the Israelites.
Each
of you
must
return home,
for this word
is from
Me. ’”
So they listened to the word of the
LORD
and turned
back
according to the word of the
LORD
.
Thus
says Yahweh,
You shall
not go up ,
nor
fight against your brothers the children
of Israel:
return every
man
to
his
house;
for this thing
is of
me. So they listened to the word of Yahweh,
and returned
and
went
their
way,
according to the word of Yahweh
.
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there.
And from
there
he went out and built Penuel.
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill -
country of Ephraim ,
and lived therein;
and he went out from
there,
and built Penuel.
Jeroboam said in his heart, “
Now the kingdom might
revert
to the house of David .
Jeroboam said in his heart, Now will
the kingdom return
to the house of David :
If these
people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the
LORD
at Jerusalem, their
hearts
will return
to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah; then
they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah. ”
if this
people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Yahweh
at Jerusalem, then
will the
heart
of
this
people
turn
again
to their lord, even
to
Rehoboam king of Judah; and
they will kill me ,
and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.
After
seeking
advice,
the king made two golden
calves and said to the
people
, “Going
up
to
Jerusalem
is too much for you .
Here,
O
Israel,
are
your gods, who
brought you up out of the land of Egypt. ”
Whereupon
the king took
counsel,
and
made two calves of
gold;
and he
said to them
, It
is too much for you to
go
up
to
Jerusalem:
see
your gods, Israel,
which
brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
One
calf
he set up
in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
He set the
one
in Bethel, and the other put
he
in Dan.
And
this thing became a sin; the people walked
as
far
as
Dan
to worship before one
of
the calves
.
This thing became a sin; for
the people went
[
to worship ]
before the one,
even
to
Dan
.
Jeroboam
also
built
shrines
on
the
high places and appointed
from every
class
of
people priests
who were not Levites
.
He
made
houses
of
high places ,
and made
priests
from among
all
the
people ,
who were not of
the
sons
of
Levi
.
And
Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth
month, like the feast that was
in Judah, and he offered
sacrifices
on
the altar; he made
this
offering
in Bethel to
sacrifice
to the calves he had set
up,
and he installed
priests
in Bethel for
the high places he had set
up
.
Jeroboam ordained a feast in
the
eighth
month,
on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is
in Judah, and he went
up
to
the altar; so
did
he in Bethel ,
sacrificing
to the calves that
he had made:
and he placed
in Bethel the priests
of
the
high places that
he had made
.
On the fifteenth day of
the eighth month, a
month of his own choosing,
Jeroboam
offered
sacrifices
on
the
altar
he
had
set
up
in
Bethel.
So
he ordained a feast for the Israelites
, offered
sacrifices
on
the altar, and
burned
incense.
He
went
up
to
the
altar
which
he
had
made
in
Bethel
on the fifteenth day in
the eighth month, even
in
the
month which
he
had
devised
of his own heart:
and
he ordained a feast for the children
of
Israel
, and
went
up
to
the altar, to
burn
incense.
