YLT
Young's Literal Translation
I do not want
you to be unaware
, brothers
, that our forefathers
were all
under the cloud, and that
they
all passed through the sea .
And
I do not wish
you to be ignorant
, brethren
, that all
our fathers
were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea ,
They
were
all baptized
into
Moses in the cloud and in the sea .
and
all to
Moses were
baptized
in the cloud ,
and in the sea ;
They
all ate
the same spiritual food
and
all the same spiritual food did
eat,
and drank
the same spiritual drink ;
for they drank
from
the
spiritual rock that
accompanied
them, and that
rock was Christ .
and all
the same spiritual drink did
drink,
for they were
drinking
of
a
spiritual rock following
them, and the
rock was the
Christ ;
Nevertheless,
God was not pleased with
most
of
them
, for they were struck
down
in the wilderness .
but
in
the
most
of
them
God was not well
pleased, for they were strewn
in the wilderness ,
These
things took
place
as
examples
to
keep
us from
craving
evil things as they
did.
and
those
things became
types
of
us ,
for
our
not
passionately
desiring
evil things ,
as also
these
did desire
.
Do
not
be
idolaters, as some
of them were.
As it is
written :
“
The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got
up to indulge
in
revelry.”
Neither
become
ye
idolaters, as certain
of them ,
as it hath
been
written ,
`
The people sat down to eat and to drink, and stood
up to play;'
We should
not
commit sexual
immorality
, as some
of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of
them
died.
neither
may
we commit whoredom
, as certain
of them did commit
whoredom
, and there
fell
in one day twenty-three thousand ;
We should
not
test
Christ, as some
of them did, and were
killed
by snakes.
neither
may
we tempt
the
Christ, as also
certain
of them did tempt
, and by the
serpents
did
perish;
And
do
not
complain
, as some of them did, and were
killed
by the destroying
angel
.
neither
murmur
ye
, as also
some of them did murmur
, and did
perish
by the destroyer
.
Now
these things happened
to
them
as examples
and were written down
as
warnings
for us
, on
whom the fulfillment
of the ages has
come .
And
all
these things as types
did
happen
to
those
persons,
and they
were written for our
admonition
, to
whom the end
of the ages did
come ,
So the
one
who
thinks
he is standing
firm
should
be
careful
not
to fall.
so that
he who
is thinking
to stand
--
let
him
observe,
lest
he
fall.
No temptation has
seized
you except what
is
common
to
man.
And God is faithful ;
He
will not let
you be tempted beyond
what you
can
bear.
But
when
you
are tempted
, He will also provide
an
escape
, so
that
you
can
stand
up
under
it.
No temptation hath
taken
you --
except human;
and God is faithful ,
who
will not suffer
you to
be tempted above
what ye
are able
, but
He will make,
with
the
temptation,
also the
outlet
, for
your
being
able
to
bear
`
it '
.
Therefore
, my beloved, flee from idolatry .
Wherefore
, my beloved, flee from the
idolatry ;
I speak to
reasonable
people;
judge for
yourselves
what I say .
as
to
wise
men
I speak --
judge ye
what I say :
Is
not
the cup of blessing that we bless a
participation
in
the blood of Christ? And
is
not
the bread that we break a
participation
in
the body of Christ?
The cup of the
blessing that we bless --
is
it
not
the fellowship
of
the
blood of the
Christ? the bread that we break --
is
it
not
the fellowship
of
the
body of the
Christ?
Because there
is
one loaf
, we
who
are
many
are
one body ;
for we all partake
of the one loaf
.
because one bread
, one body ,
are
we
the
many
--
for we all of the one bread
do
partake
.
Consider
the
people
of
Israel :
Are not those who
eat
the sacrifices fellow
partakers
in the altar?
See
Israel according
to
the
flesh!
are not those eating
the sacrifices in the fellowship
of
the
altar?
Am
I
suggesting,
then ,
that food
sacrificed
to
an idol is anything ,
or that an idol is anything?
what
then do
I
say?
that an idol is anything ?
or that a
sacrifice
offered
to
an idol is anything? --
No, but the sacrifices
of
pagans
are
offered
to demons ,
not to God .
And I do not want
you to be
participants
with
demons.
`
no, '
but that
the things
that
the
nations
sacrifice
--
they
sacrifice
to demons and
not to God ;
and I do not wish
you to come
into
the
fellowship
of
the
demons.
You
cannot
drink
the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too
; you
cannot
partake
in
the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.
Ye
are
not
able
the cup of the Lord to
drink,
and the cup of demons; ye
are
not
able
of
the table of the Lord to
partake,
and of
the table of demons ;
Are
we trying
to
provoke
the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
do
we arouse
the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than He?
“Everything
is
permissible
, ”
but not everything
is
beneficial.
“Everything
is
permissible
, ”
but not everything
is
edifying.
All
things
to
me
are
lawful
, but all
things
are
not profitable;
all
things
to
me
are
lawful
, but all
things
do
not build
up;
No one should
seek his own good,
but the
good
of
others
.
let
no one seek his own --
but each
another's
.
Eat
anything
sold
in the meat market without
raising
questions
of conscience,
Whatever
in the meat -
market is
sold
eat
ye,
not
inquiring,
because
of the
conscience,
for ,
“
The earth
is the Lord’s
, and the
fullness
thereof.”
for the Lord's
`
is '
the earth
, and its
fulness;
If an
unbeliever
invites
you to
a
meal
and you
want
to go, eat
anything
set before you without
raising
questions
of conscience .
and
if any
one
of
the
unbelieving
do
call
you ,
and ye
wish
to go, all
that
is
set before you eat,
nothing
inquiring,
because
of the
conscience ;
But
if someone
tells
you, “
This food
was
offered
to idols
, ”
then
do not eat it
, for
the
sake
of the
one who told
you
and for
the
sake
of conscience —
and
if any
one
may
say
to
you, `
This is
a
thing
sacrificed
to an
idol
, '
--
do not eat, because
of that
one who shewed
`it',
and of the
conscience ,
for
the
Lord's
`is'
the
earth
and
its
fulness:
the
other
one’s
conscience, I mean
, not your
own.
For why should
my freedom
be
determined
by someone
else’s
conscience?
and
conscience, I say
, not of
thyself,
but
of
the
other,
for why `is
it'
that
my liberty
is
judged
by another's
conscience?
If I partake in
the
meal
with
thankfulness
, why am I denounced
because
of that for which I give thanks?
and
if I thankfully
do
partake, why am I evil
spoken
of ,
for
that for which I give thanks?
So
whether you
eat or drink or whatever
you
do, do it
all to the glory of God .
Whether ,
then,
ye
eat ,
or drink ,
or do anything
, do all to the glory of God ;
Do
not
become a
stumbling
block
, whether
to Jews or
Greeks or
the church
of God —
become offenceless
, both
to Jews and
Greeks ,
and
to
the assembly
of God ;
as I also try
to
please
everyone
in all I
do .
For
I
am
not seeking my own good
, but the
good
of many ,
that they may be saved.
as I also in all things
do please
all,
not seeking my own profit
, but that
of many --
that they may be saved.
