For
I would
not ,
brethren,
have
you ignorant
, that our fathers
were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea ;
I do
not want
you to
be
unaware
, brothers,
that our forefathers
were all under the cloud, and that
they
all passed through the sea .
and
were all baptized unto
Moses in the cloud and in the sea ;
They
were all baptized into
Moses in the cloud and in the sea .
and
did
all eat
the same spiritual food ;
They
all ate
the same spiritual food
and did
all
drink
the same spiritual drink :
for they drank of
a
spiritual rock that followed
them :
and the
rock was Christ.
and drank
the same spiritual drink ;
for they drank from
the
spiritual rock that accompanied
them ,
and that
rock was Christ.
Howbeit
with
most
of
them
God was not well
pleased :
for they were overthrown
in the wilderness.
Nevertheless,
God was not pleased with
most
of
them,
for they were struck
down
in the wilderness.
Now
these things were
our
examples ,
to the
intent
we
should
not
lust
after
evil things ,
as they also
lusted
.
These things took
place
as
examples to keep
us
from
craving
evil things as they did
.
Neither
be ye
idolaters, as were
some of them ;
as it is written ,
The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose
up to play
.
Do
not
be idolaters, as some of them were.
As it is written :
“
The people sat down to eat and to
drink, and got
up to indulge
in
revelry
. ”
Neither
let
us
commit fornication
, as some of them committed
, and fell
in one day three
and
twenty thousand.
We
should
not
commit sexual
immorality
, as some of them did
, and in one day twenty -three
thousand of
them
died
.
Neither
let
us
make
trial
of
the
Lord
, as some of them made
trial
, and perished
by the
serpents
.
We
should
not
test
Christ
, as some of them did
, and were
killed
by snakes
.
Neither
murmur
ye
, as some of them murmured
, and perished
by the destroyer
.
And
do
not
complain
, as some of them did
, and were
killed
by the destroying
angel
.
Now these things happened unto
them by
way
of
example;
and they
were written for our
admonition
, upon
whom the ends
of the ages are
come.
Now these things happened to
them as
examples
and were written down
as
warnings
for us
, on
whom the fulfillment
of the ages has
come.
Wherefore
let
him
that
thinketh
he
standeth
take
heed
lest
he fall.
So
the
one
who
thinks
he is
standing
firm
should
be
careful
not
to
fall.
There
hath
no temptation taken
you but
such
as
man can
bear:
but
God is faithful ,
who
will not suffer
you to
be tempted above
that
ye
are
able;
but will with
the
temptation
make
also the
way
of
escape, that ye
may
be
able
to
endure
it.
No temptation has
seized
you except
what
is
common
to
man .
And
God is faithful ;
He
will not let
you be tempted beyond
what
you
can
bear.
But when
you
are
tempted,
He
will also provide
an
escape, so
that you
can
stand
up
under
it.
Wherefore
, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
Therefore
, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
I speak as
to wise
men
; judge ye
what I say.
I speak to reasonable
people
; judge for
yourselves
what I say.
The cup of blessing which
we bless ,
is
it
not
a communion
of
the blood of Christ? The bread which
we break ,
is
it
not
a communion
of
the body of Christ?
Is
not
the cup of blessing that
we bless a participation
in
the blood of Christ? And
is
not
the bread that
we break a participation
in
the body of Christ?
seeing
that
we
, who are many ,
are one bread,
one
body :
for we are
all partake of the one bread
.
Because
there
is
one
loaf
, we
who are many are one body ;
for we all partake of the one loaf
.
Behold
Israel
after
the flesh
: have
not they
that
eat the sacrifices communion
with
the altar?
Consider
the people
of
Israel
: Are
not those
who
eat the sacrifices fellow
partakers
in
the altar?
What
say
I then ?
that a
thing
sacrificed to idols
is anything, or that an idol is anything?
Am
I suggesting,
then ,
that food
sacrificed to an
idol
is anything, or that an idol is anything?
But
`I
say'
, that
the
things
which
the Gentiles
sacrifice,
they
sacrifice
to demons, and
not to God :
and I would
not that
ye
should
have
communion
with demons.
No
, but
the sacrifices
of
pagans
are
offered
to demons, not to God .
And I do
not want
you
to
be
participants
with demons.
Ye
cannot drink the cup of the Lord ,
and the cup of demons :
ye
cannot partake of
the table of the Lord ,
and of
the table of demons.
You
cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too;
you
cannot partake in
the table of the Lord and the table of demons too
.
Or
do
we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
Are
we trying
to
provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
All
things
are
lawful;
but not all
things
are
expedient
. All
things
are
lawful;
but not all
things
edify
.
“Everything
is
permissible,”
but not everything
is
beneficial
. “Everything
is
permissible,”
but not everything
is
edifying
.
Let
no man
seek his own, but `each'
his
neighbor's
`
good '
.
No one
should
seek his own good
, but the
good of
others
.
Whatsoever
is
sold in the shambles,
eat,
asking
no
question
for
conscience '
sake
,
Eat
anything
sold in the meat
market
without
raising
questions
of
conscience,
for the earth is the Lord's
, and the fulness
thereof.
for ,
“
The earth is the Lord’s
, and the fullness
thereof. ”
If one
of
them
that
believe
not
biddeth
you `
to a feast',
and ye
are
disposed
to go ;
whatsoever
is
set before you ,
eat,
asking
no
question
for
conscience '
sake
.
If an
unbeliever
invites
you to a meal
and you
want
to go ,
eat
anything
set before you without
raising
questions
of
conscience.
But if any
man
say
unto
you, This hath
been
offered in
sacrifice
, eat
not, for his
sake that
showed
it,
and for conscience
sake :
But if someone
tells
you, “
This food
was
offered to
idols
, ”
then
do
not eat
it
, for the
sake of
the
one
who
told
you
and for the
sake of
conscience—
conscience, I say
, not thine
own ,
but
the
other's;
for why is
my liberty
judged
by another
conscience?
the
other
one’s
conscience, I mean
, not your
own .
For why should
my freedom
be
determined
by someone
else’s
conscience?
If I partake with thankfulness, why am I evil
spoken
of for
that for which I give thanks?
If I partake in
the
meal
with thankfulness, why am I denounced
because
of that for which I give thanks?
Whether therefore
ye
eat ,
or drink ,
or whatsoever
ye
do, do all to the glory of God.
So
whether you
eat or drink or whatever
you
do, do it
all to the glory of God.
Give
no
occasions
of
stumbling, either
to Jews ,
or to
Greeks ,
or to
the church of God :
Do
not
become
a
stumbling block
, whether
to Jews or Greeks or the church of God —
even
as I also please all
men
in all things,
not seeking mine
own profit
, but the `profit'
of the
many, that they may be saved.
as I also try
to
please everyone
in all I
do.
For
I
am
not seeking my
own good
, but the good
of many, that they may be saved.
