Then
Satan rose
up against Israel and incited
David to take
a
census
of
Israel.
And
Satan stood
up against Israel ,
and moved
David to number
Israel.
So
David said to Joab and the commanders
of the troops
, “
Go and
count
the
Israelites
from Beersheba
to Dan and bring me a
report
, so
that I may know their
number
. ”
And
David said to Joab and to
the princes
of the people
, Go ,
number
Israel
from Beer-sheba
even
to Dan ;
and bring me word
, that I may know the
sum
of
them
.
But
Joab replied
, “May
the
LORD
multiply
His troops
a hundred times over.
My lord the king, are they not all servants
of
my lord
? Why does
my lord want
to
do
this? Why should
he bring
guilt on
Israel? ”
And
Joab said
, Jehovah
make
his people
a hundred times as
many
as
they
are:
but,
my lord the king, are they not all my lord's
servants
? why doth
my lord require
this thing
? why will
he be
a
cause
of
guilt unto
Israel?
Nevertheless ,
the king’s
word prevailed against Joab. So
Joab departed and traveled
throughout Israel, and then
he
returned
to Jerusalem.
Nevertheless the king's
word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore
Joab departed ,
and went
throughout all
Israel, and came
to Jerusalem.
And Joab reported
to
David
the total
number
of the troops
. In
all Israel there
were 1,100,000
men who
drew the
sword ,
including
470,000
in
Judah.
And Joab gave
up
the sum
of the numbering
of
the
people
unto
David
. And
all they
of
Israel were a
thousand
thousand
and
a
hundred
thousand
men that
drew sword :
and
Judah was
four
hundred
threescore
and
ten
thousand
men
that
drew
sword
.
But Joab
did
not
include
Levi and Benjamin in
the
count,
because
the king’s
command
was detestable
to him
.
But Levi and Benjamin counted
he
not
among
them;
for
the king's
word
was abominable
to Joab
.
This
command
was
also
evil
in
the
sight
of
God; so
He struck
Israel.
And
God was
displeased
with
this
thing
; therefore
he smote
Israel.
Then
David said to
God, “
I have sinned greatly because
I have done this thing .
Now I
beg
You
to
take
away the iniquity of Your
servant ,
for I have acted
very foolishly. ”
And
David said unto
God, I have sinned greatly ,
in
that
I have done this thing :
but
now ,
put
away ,
I
beseech
thee,
the iniquity of thy
servant ;
for I have done
very foolishly.
And the
LORD
instructed
Gad, David’s
seer,
And Jehovah
spake
unto
Gad, David's
seer, saying,
“
Go and tell
David that
this
is
what
the
LORD
says:
‘
I am
offering
you
three options.
Choose one of them, and
I will
carry
it out
against
you
. ’”
Go and speak
unto
David ,
saying,
Thus
saith
Jehovah,
I offer
thee
three things:
choose thee
one of them, that
I may
do
it unto
thee
.
So Gad went
and
said
to David, “This
is
what
the
LORD
says
: ‘You
must
choose
So Gad came
to David, and
said
unto
him,
Thus
saith
Jehovah,
Take
which
thou
wilt
:
between
three years of famine ,
three months of
being
swept
away
before your
enemies
and
overtaken
by
their
swords
, or three days of
the sword of the
LORD—days
of
plague
upon
the land, with
the angel of the LORD
ravaging
every
part
of Israel. ’
Now then,
decide
how
I should
reply
to Him who
sent me. ”
either
three years of famine ;
or
three months to
be
consumed
before thy
foes
, while
the
sword
of
thine
enemies
overtaketh
thee;
or else
three days the sword of Jehovah,
even
pestilence
in
the land, and
the angel of Jehovah
destroying
throughout
all
the borders
of Israel. Now therefore
consider
what
answer
I shall
return
to him that
sent me.
David answered
Gad, “
I am deeply
distressed.
Please,
let me fall into the hand of the
LORD,
for His
mercies
are
very great ;
but
do
not
let me fall into the hands
of men
. ”
And
David said
unto
Gad, I am in
a
great
strait:
let me fall ,
I
pray,
into the hand of Jehovah;
for very great are
his
mercies:
and
let me not
fall into the hand
of man
.
So the
LORD
sent a plague
upon Israel ,
and seventy thousand men of
Israel
fell
dead
.
So Jehovah
sent a pestilence
upon Israel ;
and there
fell
of
Israel
seventy thousand men.
Then
God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem,
but
as the
angel
was doing
so
, the
LORD
saw
it
and relented
from
the calamity
, and He
said to the angel
who
was
destroying the
people
, “
Enough !
Withdraw
your
hand
now !”
At
that
time
the angel of the
LORD
was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
And
God sent an angel unto
Jerusalem
to destroy it:
and
as he
was about
to
destroy
, Jehovah
beheld,
and he
repented
him
of
the evil
, and said to the destroying angel
, It
is
enough ;
now stay
thy
hand.
And
the angel of Jehovah
was standing by the threshing -
floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
When
David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the
LORD
standing between heaven
and
earth, with
a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem ,
David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown
.
And
David lifted up his eyes ,
and saw the angel of Jehovah
standing between earth and
heaven
, having
a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem .
Then
David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon
their
faces
.
And David said to
God, “Was
it not I who
gave
the
order
to
count
the people? I am
the
one
who
has
sinned and acted
wickedly .
But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD
my God, please
let
Your
hand
fall
upon
me and my father’s
house ,
but do
not let
this
plague
remain
upon
Your
people. ”
And David said unto
God, Is
it not I that
commanded
the people to
be
numbered
? even
I it
is
that
have
sinned and done
very
wickedly ;
but these sheep, what have they done? let
thy
hand,
I
pray
thee,
O Jehovah
my God, be
against
me ,
and against
my father's
house ;
but not against
thy
people ,
that
they
should
be
plagued
.
Then the angel of the
LORD
ordered
Gad to tell
David
to go up and build
an altar to
the
LORD
on
the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then the angel of Jehovah
commanded
Gad to say
to David,
that
David
should
go up ,
and rear
an altar unto
Jehovah
in
the threshing -
floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
So
David went up at the word
that
Gad had
spoken
in the name of the
LORD
.
And
David went up at the saying
of
Gad ,
which
he
spake
in the name of Jehovah
.
Now
Ornan was
threshing
wheat
when
he
turned and saw the angel; and his four sons who
were with him hid themselves.
And
Ornan turned back,
and saw the angel; and his four sons that
were with him hid themselves. Now
Ornan
was
threshing
wheat.
David came to Ornan, and
when
Ornan looked out
and saw David, he
left
the threshing floor and bowed facedown
before
David.
And
as
David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and
went
out
of
the threshing -
floor ,
and bowed himself
to
David with
his
face
to
the
ground
.
Then David said to Ornan, “Grant
me the site
of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to
the
LORD.
Sell
it
to
me
for the full price, so
that the plague upon
the
people
may be halted
. ”
Then David said to Ornan, Give
me the place
of this threshing -
floor, that I may build thereon
an altar unto
Jehovah:
for the full price shalt
thou
give
it
me
, that the plague may be stayed
from
the
people
.
Ornan said to
David, “
My lord the king may
take
whatever
seems
good .
Look
, I will
give the oxen for the
burnt offerings, the threshing sledges
for the
wood, and the wheat for the grain
offering —
I will
give it all. ”
And
Ornan said unto
David, Take
it
to
thee,
and
let
my lord the king do
that
which
is
good in
his
eyes:
lo
, I give `thee'
the oxen for burnt -
offerings, and
the threshing instruments
for wood, and the wheat for the meal-
offering ;
I give it all.
“No,”
replied
King David, “
I insist
on
paying
the full price ,
for I will not take for the
LORD
what
belongs
to
you
, nor will
I
offer burnt offerings
that
cost me
nothing
. ”
And
king David said
to
Ornan
, Nay;
but
I will
verily
buy
it
for
the full price :
for I will not take that
which
is
thine
for Jehovah
, nor offer a
burnt -offering
without
cost.
So David paid
Ornan six hundred shekels of gold for
the
site
.
So David gave
to
Ornan for
the
place
six hundred shekels of gold by
weight
.
And there
he
built an altar to
the
LORD
and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings .
He
called upon the
LORD,
who
answered him with
fire
from heaven on
the altar of burnt offering.
And David
built there
an altar unto
Jehovah,
and offered burnt -
offerings and peace -
offerings ,
and
called upon Jehovah;
and
he
answered him from heaven by
fire
upon
the altar of burnt -
offering.
Then
the
LORD
spoke
to
the angel ,
who
put his sword back
into its
sheath.
And
Jehovah
commanded
the angel ;
and
he
put up
his sword again
into the
sheath thereof
.
At that time, when David saw that the
LORD
had answered him at
the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he offered
sacrifices
there.
At that time, when David saw that Jehovah
had answered him in
the threshing -
floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then
he sacrificed
there.
For the tabernacle of the
LORD
that
Moses had
made in the wilderness and the altar of burnt offering were presently
at the high place in
Gibeon ,
For the tabernacle of Jehovah,
which
Moses made in the wilderness ,
and the altar of burnt -
offering ,
were at that
time
in
the high place at
Gibeon .
but David could not go before it to inquire of God ,
because
he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the
LORD
.
But David could not go before it to inquire of God ;
for
he was afraid because
of the sword of the angel of Jehovah
.
